Every day you encounter thousands of claims, statistics, headlines, and “facts” across websites, social media, textbooks, and news channels. Some are accurate. Many are not. The ability to tell the difference is no longer an optional academic skill but a survival skill in the digital age. For students of library and information science, and for anyone who works with information professionally, evaluating sources before trusting or sharing them is the foundation of credible work. This post walks through how to assess information for accuracy and reliability using established criteria and practical methods.

Why information quality matters

The cost of acting on bad information can be severe. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization warned that the world was facing not just a disease outbreak but an “infodemic”, an overwhelming flood of false and misleading content that made it harder for people to find trustworthy guidance. False cures and fabricated death counts spread faster than verified medical advice, and the consequences ranged from public panic to genuine harm to health.

The scale of the problem in India is striking. The country is the largest market for WhatsApp, and studies show that most people forward content without checking it, often because they trust messages from family and friends. One analysis found that health-related fake news made up the largest category of false claims circulating during the pandemic, and that online media generated far more fake news than mainstream outlets. With the rise of generative AI, deepfakes and voice cloning have made convincing fake content cheaper and faster to produce, raising the stakes even further.

For an information professional, the danger is professional as well as personal. A librarian who recommends an unreliable source, or a researcher who builds an argument on faulty data, damages both their credibility and the people who depend on their judgment. This is why evaluation is treated as a core competency rather than an afterthought.

Key evaluation criteria

The most widely taught framework for assessing sources is the CRAAP test, developed by librarian Sarah Blakeslee and her team at California State University, Chico, in 2004. CRAAP is an acronym for five criteria: Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. Each one prompts a specific question you should ask before relying on any piece of information.

Currency

Currency asks whether the information is current enough for your needs. Check the publication or last-updated date. Has the information been revised, or has newer research replaced it? For fast-moving fields like technology, medicine, or law, an outdated source can be actively misleading. For historical or foundational topics, an older source may still be perfectly valid. The right answer depends on your topic.

Relevance

Relevance asks whether the information actually addresses your question and suits your audience. A source might be accurate but too elementary, too advanced, or simply off-topic. Ask who the intended audience is and whether the depth of treatment matches what you need. A good practice is to compare several sources before deciding that one is the right fit.

Authority

Authority focuses on who created the information and whether they are qualified to do so. Look at the author’s credentials, their affiliation with an educational institution or established organisation, and whether other experts cite their work. The domain of a website also offers clues. A .gov address signals a government body, .edu an educational institution, and .org a non-profit, though none of these guarantees quality on its own.

Accuracy

Accuracy is the heart of reliability. Ask where the information comes from, whether it is supported by evidence, and whether you can verify it against another reputable source. A trustworthy source cites its own sources so you can check the underlying evidence. Watch for signs of weak accuracy: claims with no supporting data, conclusions that jump ahead of the evidence, emotional or loaded language, and basic errors of spelling or grammar that suggest little editorial care.

Purpose

Purpose asks why the information exists. Is it meant to inform, teach, sell, entertain, or persuade? Content created to sell a product or push a political view is more likely to omit inconvenient facts or present only one side. A reliable source makes its purpose clear and treats opposing viewpoints fairly rather than hiding them.

One caution worth remembering: a checklist is a guide, not a verdict. Experts disagree, established facts get overturned by new discoveries, and a source that “fails” one criterion can still be useful if you read it critically and acknowledge its limitations. The goal is informed judgment, not mechanical box-ticking.

Peer review and citations

For academic and scientific work, one of the strongest indicators of credibility is whether a source has been peer reviewed. Peer review is the evaluation of scholarly work by other experts in the same field who have no connection to the author. It functions as a form of quality control that maintains standards and lends credibility to published research.

How peer review works

The process follows a clear sequence. A researcher submits an article to a scholarly journal. The editor first checks whether it fits the journal’s scope, then sends suitable manuscripts to expert reviewers who critique the methodology, findings, and reasoning. Reviewers return the manuscript with suggested changes or a recommendation to publish or reject. The author revises accordingly, and only then does the work appear in print. This scrutiny is why a peer-reviewed paper carries more authority than an ordinary article. Top journals are highly selective, with over 90% of submitted papers rejected.

Peer review comes in different forms. In single-blind review, the reviewers know the author’s identity but the author does not know theirs. In double-blind review, both sides remain anonymous, which reduces the risk of bias. Keep in mind that not every scholarly source is peer reviewed, and the process is not flawless. Critics point to its slowness and to potential bias among editors and reviewers. Still, it remains the foundation of trustworthy academic publishing.

Reading citations as evidence

Citations are another reliable signal. A source that carefully references its claims is showing its working and inviting you to verify it. When evaluating, do not just count citations; follow a few of them. Do they lead to genuine, relevant sources, or to weak material that does not actually support the claim? A long reference list of credible, scholarly sources strengthens a work, while citations that misrepresent what they point to are a serious warning sign.

Comparing data across sources

No single source should be trusted in isolation. The most reliable way to confirm a fact is to check whether independent sources agree on it. This practice, sometimes called lateral reading, protects you against bias, error, and deliberate manipulation.

When you compare sources, look for consensus among credible outlets. If a striking statistic appears in only one place and nowhere else, treat it with caution. Misinformation often involves true information that has been twisted or recontextualised rather than invented outright, which makes it especially convincing. Cross-checking exposes these distortions because the original, accurate version usually surfaces elsewhere.

India has a growing ecosystem of fact-checking organisations that do exactly this kind of comparative verification, independently investigating viral claims and tracing them back to their source. Using established fact-checkers, alongside official statistics from government bodies and data from international organisations, gives you multiple reference points rather than a single, possibly biased, view. The more independent confirmations a claim has, the more confident you can be in it.

Tools for information evaluation

Academia has developed practical methods and resources to make evaluation systematic rather than guesswork. The CRAAP test itself is the most common classroom tool, often supplied as a printable checklist or rubric that walks you through each criterion with guiding questions. Many university libraries publish detailed guides explaining how to distinguish scholarly sources from popular ones, which is one of the quickest ways to gauge reliability.

Beyond checklists, a few habits make evaluation faster and more effective:

Use academic databases. Library search tools usually let you filter results to show only peer-reviewed material, removing a large share of unreliable content at the outset.

Investigate the author and publisher. A quick search on who produced the content, and what their interests are, often reveals bias or a commercial motive that the page itself hides.

Trace claims to their origin. Follow a statistic or quote back to its first appearance. The original context frequently differs from how the claim is later presented.

Watch for emotional manipulation. Content engineered to provoke outrage or fear is designed to be shared before it is checked. A strong emotional reaction is a cue to slow down and verify.

None of these tools replaces critical thinking. They structure it. The aim is to build a reflex where evaluation happens automatically, before you cite, share, or act on what you read. For an information professional, this habit is the difference between being a reliable guide and an unwitting channel for misinformation.
