What makes an abstracting service different from a simple summary collection is that each abstract is paired with a complete bibliographic citation. This citation typically includes the author’s name, the title of the article, the name of the journal, volume, issue, page numbers, and year of publication. Chemical Abstracts Service

The Chemical Abstracts Service, known as CAS, is among the most famous abstracting services in the world. It was established in 1907 as a division of the American Chemical Society and has built the most comprehensive repository of research in chemistry and related sciences over more than a century. Its first volume contained around twelve thousand abstracts drawn from journals worldwide.

CAS covers chemistry along with many related disciplines, including biomedical science, engineering, materials science, and agricultural science. It draws material from journals, patents, conference proceedings, and other sources across the globe. Over time, the service introduced major innovations such as the CAS Registry Number, a unique identifier assigned to each chemical substance that removes the ambiguity of chemical naming. It later moved from print into electronic databases and online search systems, reflecting how abstracting services evolved with technology.

Indian Science Abstracts

A leading national example is Indian Science Abstracts, abbreviated as ISA. It has been reporting scientific work done in the country since 1965 and is published as a semi-monthly abstracting journal. ISA covers the full spectrum of science and technology, including areas such as intellectual property rights, management, and library and information science.

The journal reports original research articles, short communications, review articles, conference proceedings, monographs, patents, standards, and theses. It is brought out by the national science communication body now known as CSIR-NIScPR, formed through the merger of earlier institutions under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. In keeping with the shift toward digital publishing, the print form of ISA was discontinued and an online version was introduced. ISA gives researchers and policymakers a consolidated view of domestic scientific output that would otherwise be hard to track.

Other notable services

Beyond these two, several other services illustrate the variety in this field. Biological Abstracts covers the life sciences, while Physics Abstracts serves the physics community. Many modern databases such as PubMed in the medical and life sciences combine abstracting with indexing and searching functions, showing how the traditional abstracting service has merged into today’s large bibliographic platforms.

The shift from print to digital

The nature of abstracting services has changed dramatically with electronic publishing. Earlier, these services existed mainly as printed periodicals issued at fixed intervals. Today, most are searchable digital databases that let users scan extensive collections of literature and select only the most relevant full texts. The arrival of networks and the web has lowered storage costs, sped up processing, and enabled remote access from anywhere.

This transition has not changed the core purpose of abstracting services. They still exist to help users find relevant documents efficiently.
