Walk into a library today and you will notice something different from a decade ago. The catalogue is no longer a silent list of titles. Users can tag books, write reviews, rate what they read, and recommend titles to others. This shift from a one-way service to a two-way conversation has a name: Library 2.0. It borrows the participatory spirit of Web 2.0 and applies it to library services, turning passive readers into active contributors. For students of library and information science, understanding Lib 2.0 is essential because it reshapes how web-based library services are designed and delivered.

The rise of Lib 2.0

The term Library 2.0 was coined by Michael Casey in 2006 on his blog LibraryCrunch. He argued that libraries, especially public ones, stood at a crossroads where the tools of Web 2.0 had real value for the library community. His core idea was that libraries should adopt a strategy of constant change while inviting users to participate in shaping services.

At its heart, Library 2.0 is about user-centered change. The model marks a transition in how services reach users, with the focus on participation and on users helping to create content and community. Casey and his co-author Laura Savastinuk developed this idea in their work on participatory library service, where the central theme is that the active, empowered user is the engine of a modern library.

What does this look like in practice? Information flows in both directions. The library shares resources with users, and users share feedback, tags, ratings, and reviews back with the library. Because of this two-way flow, services can evolve and improve on a constant, rapid basis rather than staying frozen for years.

How Lib 2.0 differs from the traditional library

The older model, sometimes called Library 1.0, was largely static and top-down. The librarian decided what was offered, and the user simply received it. Services were updated infrequently. Library 2.0 challenges this passivity. According to the scholar Michael Maness, Library 2.0 rests on four essential elements: it is user-centered, multimedia, socially rich, and communally innovative.

These elements blur the old divide between librarian and user. Services are co-created. A useful related idea is the perpetual beta, the practice of keeping a service in a state of ongoing iteration, refining it based on real user feedback instead of waiting for a big, occasional overhaul. This keeps library offerings relevant in a fast-changing digital environment.

Tools that power the shift

Library 2.0 is not just a philosophy; it relies on concrete tools. Common examples include blogs, wikis, instant messaging for virtual reference, podcasts, and social networking. Blogs were among the first Web 2.0 tools libraries used to talk to their users, though social networks later took over much of that role. The OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) also changed, shifting from rigid keyword searches toward dynamic, user-centered discovery systems that allow tagging and reviews. The cataloguing tools discussed below are among the clearest examples of this transformation.

Tools like LibraryThing

LibraryThing is one of the best-known examples of social cataloguing. It is a cataloguing and social networking site for book lovers. Members catalogue their personal collections, classify titles using tags, and contribute book reviews. Users add books by entering a title, author, or ISBN, and the system pulls catalogue information automatically.

What makes LibraryThing relevant to Lib 2.0 is its social layer. Users can organise and search their collections with descriptive tags, network by reviewing books, explore similarly tagged titles, and join discussion boards. The site also recommends books based on the collective intelligence of other members’ libraries. In effect, it functions as social media built around a book collection, where the conversation centres on the books themselves rather than on the users.

From personal tool to library catalogue

LibraryThing also offers a service for institutions called LibraryThing for Libraries. This brings user-generated content directly into a library’s own catalogue. The data includes tags, recommendations, and links between titles. When displayed in the catalogue, tags appear as a tag cloud, where larger and bolder words show how frequently a tag has been used.

This matters for two reasons. First, it enriches the catalogue with the natural language that real readers use, sitting alongside formal subject headings like the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Tags can capture how a community actually thinks about a book. Second, tags go through a screening process that filters out purely personal entries such as “to read” or “gift from mom”, keeping the displayed tags useful for everyone. Scholars have studied these user-generated tags as a complement to traditional cataloguing, finding they can improve subject access for readers and researchers.

Why this benefits LIS practice

For a librarian, social tagging captures part of a community’s knowledge and dialogue. A practical example: a library could ask faculty members who place books on reserve to add short notes explaining why a work matters to their field. Because these come from subject experts rather than anonymous strangers, the reviews carry more weight for that community. Tagging, community reviews, and ratings give users a sense of engagement and ownership over the collection, which is exactly the participatory goal of Library 2.0.

GuruLib and Revish

While LibraryThing is the headline example, two other tools illustrate different angles of social cataloguing and reviewing: GuruLib and Revish. Comparing them shows how Lib 2.0 tools can serve both collection management and community discussion.

GuruLib: cataloguing and tracking

GuruLib is an online home library management tool that catalogues books, movies, music, games, and software. It grew out of a couple’s need to organise their own home collection and was offered as a free web service. Its strength lies in cataloguing and tracking rather than pure social discussion.

GuruLib pulls catalogue information from hundreds of public and university libraries around the world, as well as from commercial book databases. Users can add items by typing an ISBN or UPC, and the tool even lets users scan a book cover with a webcam to fetch its details. Beyond cataloguing, it helps users track borrowed and loaned items, keep a wish list, and estimate the value of a collection for insurance or personal interest. It also includes social features: users can view each other’s libraries, lend and borrow, discuss interests in forums, and create widgets to share their collections on a blog. In short, GuruLib answers the practical question of how to manage and share a multi-format personal collection online.

Revish: reviews and community

Revish approaches the same world from the review side. It is a community-driven platform for book enthusiasts where the main activities are writing reviews, reading others’ reviews, and discussing books. Like the other tools, it offers book groups where members can talk about what they are reading. The emphasis is on the conversation around books rather than on detailed collection management or loan tracking.

Comparing the two

The contrast is instructive for LIS students. GuruLib leans toward organisation and management: cataloguing multiple media types, tracking loans, and sharing collections. Revish leans toward discussion and evaluation: reviews, ratings, and reader communities. Both, however, embody the same Library 2.0 principle. They invite users to generate content and participate, rather than only consuming a fixed service.

For a library, the lesson is not which tool to copy exactly but what features to absorb. A modern catalogue can borrow GuruLib’s ease of adding items and tracking circulation, and Revish’s culture of open reviews and group discussion. Many of these ideas now appear in widely used platforms such as social cataloguing services that combine cataloguing, reviewing, and recommendation in one place. The underlying shift is the same one Casey described: services that change constantly and treat the user as a partner.

Why this matters for web-based library services

Web-based library services are the practical output of the Library 2.0 philosophy. When a catalogue allows tagging, it is applying the LibraryThing model. When a service tracks loans and lets users share collections, it echoes GuruLib. When a platform builds review communities, it reflects what Revish set out to do. These are not separate inventions; they are expressions of a single idea that the library should be participatory.

The benefit runs in both directions. Users gain richer ways to discover, evaluate, and organise resources. Librarians gain feedback, community knowledge, and natural-language metadata that formal cataloguing alone cannot produce. This user-centered, socially rich model is what keeps libraries relevant to people who already expect tagging, ratings, and reviews from every other website they use. The challenge for the profession is to adopt these features thoughtfully, balancing user participation with the quality control that libraries are trusted to provide.
