Every year, researchers publish millions of papers, reports, and studies. No single person can read all of it, even within one narrow specialisation. This is where reviews step in. A review takes scattered findings from across the primary literature and turns them into a single, coherent account of what is known about a subject. Within the family of information consolidation products, reviews occupy the highest rung, because they involve the most intensive intellectual reprocessing of raw information. This post explains what reviews are, why they matter, the functions they perform, the difficulties involved in producing them, how to judge their quality, and the main types you are likely to encounter.

Reviews are classified as secondary sources because they are built from primary literature. They became necessary for a simple reason: information explosion. Even within a small subject area, related findings are scattered across many journals, written in different languages, and often presented in highly technical formats. A review goes further by digesting, evaluating, and repackaging the intellectual content itself, so a specialist can grasp the field without wading back through the mass of original papers.

The historical function describes how a subject has developed over time, compacting existing knowledge and placing older work in context. The contemporary function serves the immediate needs of individual users, acting as a current-awareness tool and a back-up for literature searching. A single review can be deliberately structured to emphasise one function over the other, depending on who will read it.

Saving time and reducing overload

A good review lets a reader absorb the essentials of a field in hours rather than months. This matters most to scientists, engineers, medical professionals, and policy makers who need to act on knowledge rather than read for its own sake. By distilling relevant content and eliminating the irrelevant, a review brings accumulated knowledge within easy reach.

Identifying gaps and directions

Because a review surveys an entire body of work, it exposes what has already been settled and what remains unexplored. As the guidance on literature reviews from London South Bank University explains, a well-constructed review identifies gaps and places new findings in context, which helps researchers decide where to direct their effort. For someone planning a doctoral thesis or a funded project, this is invaluable.

Supporting decisions and practice

In medicine and public policy, certain kinds of reviews directly inform guidelines and practice. The systematic review, and its statistical cousin the meta-analysis, are now central to evidence-based decision making. They are also used to measure the cost-effectiveness and impact of social and economic interventions, which is why they carry weight far beyond academia.

Challenges in producing reviews

Writing a review is demanding, and several recurring difficulties explain why good ones are scarce.

Volume and time

The first obstacle is sheer scale. A reviewer must locate, read, and evaluate a large and growing body of literature, which is both time-consuming and overwhelming. Reviews are usually prepared by subject experts rather than by library professionals, unless the information officer happens to be a subject specialist. Yet experts are often busy with their own primary research, and the academic reward system tends to value original studies over synthesis work. This combination, a high skill requirement coupled with limited recognition, discourages many qualified people from taking on the task.

Scope, bias, and structure

Defining the boundaries of the subject is harder than it sounds. If the scope is too wide, the work becomes unmanageable; too narrow, and there may not be enough to review. There is also the risk of bias. Reviewers may unconsciously favour studies that support a preferred argument, often those with positive results. Finally, poor organisation can undermine even a thorough review. Transparency and freedom from bias

The most rigorous reviews state how they were conducted. For systematic reviews, formal appraisal tools exist precisely for this purpose. Consider who wrote the review and where it appeared. Check the date as well; in fast-moving fields, an older review may have been overtaken by newer findings.

Examples of reviews

Reviews come in several recognisable forms, classified by subject coverage, frequency, format, and the kind of assessment they provide. Reviews can be enumerative (listing with brief descriptions), evaluative (judging the worth of the works included), or summarising (offering a state-of-the-art overview).

Annual reviews

An annual review is a serial publication that surveys the most important research published in a discipline during a given period. The publisher Annual Reviews, a non-profit founded in 1932 with the Annual Review of Biochemistry, produces dozens of such series across the sciences and social sciences. Each volume contains authoritative articles covering major work on a topic over the preceding few years. A landmark example in this field was the Annual Review of Information Science and Technology, which began in 1966 and offered narrative, critical reviews of current topics in information science.

Journal-based and review journals

Some scholarly journals publish review articles on a regular or occasional basis, while review journals are devoted entirely to surveying progress in a field. These can be distinguished by their frequency, format, subject scope, and the type of review they provide. The systematic reviews maintained through bodies like Cochrane, and described in resources such as the systematic review guide from the University of North Carolina, represent the most methodologically structured end of this spectrum.

Monographs and advances series

Longer reviews appear as monographs or as “advances” and “recent advances” series, which track the progress of a subfield across successively numbered volumes edited by experts. Book reviews and online review platforms also help readers stay aware of new publications, though they assess single works rather than synthesising a whole field.
