Library administrators

A core duty is preparing and implementing the library’s annual budget, along with overseeing the selection, acquisition, classification, and maintenance of documents. Classifiers

Effective reference work demands expert search skills, including knowledge of Boolean operators, field searching, and search strategy formulation. A reference librarian must translate a vague information need into a precise search, then evaluate results for relevance and reliability. These human judgements add a depth that automated systems still cannot fully replicate, which is why skilled reference staff remain valuable even in an age of instant search engines.
Thesaurus designers
Behind precise searching sits a less visible specialist: the thesaurus designer. In information science, a thesaurus is not the word-finding book you use for writing. It is a controlled vocabulary tool that standardises terminology and establishes relationships between concepts. Thesaurus designers build these structures, defining preferred terms, non-preferred terms, broader and narrower terms, and related terms. As the structured arrangement of terms shows, related terms act as additional access points that let users explore connected concepts and find material they might otherwise miss. By bridging how people naturally express their needs and how systems organise knowledge, thesaurus designers improve search precision across databases and digital libraries, especially in specialised subject domains where exact terminology matters.
Adapting to digital transformation: content developers and digital librarians
The profession has changed dramatically in recent decades. While collection development and maintenance remain important, today’s professionals must navigate a far more complex information ecosystem. Two roles capture this shift most clearly, and both reflect how technology has reshaped what it means to work in libraries.
Content developers
A content developer creates, organises, and manages the information resources a library offers, increasingly in digital form. This role blends subject knowledge with an understanding of how users consume information online. Content developers prepare web content, learning materials, guides, and curated resource collections that make a library’s holdings genuinely usable. The role reflects a broader trend where libraries are no longer just custodians of physical books but active producers of information products tailored to their users. For students entering the field, this is a reminder that LIS careers now reward writing, digital design, and communication skills alongside traditional library training.
Digital librarians
The digital librarian manages and organises digital collections, handling tasks such as large-scale digitisation, storage, digital reference services, and the coordination of online search. This specialist also takes on system administration of digital platforms and repositories, plus digital rights management, which means navigating copyright and licensing for electronic content. The role has been described as that of a specialist librarian who acts as a guide along the information superhighway, managing the archive and ensuring access to it.
Nowhere is this role more visible than in major national initiatives. The National Digital Library of India (NDLI), developed by IIT Kharagpur and sponsored by the Ministry of Education, is a single-window search platform that uses metadata to guide learners across the country. As an analysis of the NDLI explains, the platform indexes only educational resources based on their metadata and exposes filters such as subject domain, educational level, and learning resource type, letting users refine their search intent with a precision that general search engines lack. Digital librarians working on such projects deal with real challenges: integrating noisy and diverse metadata from many sources, managing multilingual content, and bridging varying levels of digital literacy among users. Their work sits at the heart of efforts like Digital India and the spread of institutional repositories across universities.
Where the roles overlap
It is tempting to see these categories as separate boxes, but in practice the lines blur. Many professionals, especially in smaller institutions, perform several roles at once. A reference librarian may also handle cataloguing duties, and a digital librarian may take on content development. This overlap is not a weakness. It reflects the reality that LIS work is built on a shared core of skills, namely organising information, understanding how people search, and connecting users with the right resources. A solid LIS education gives you grounding in all these areas, which is why graduates can move between roles as their careers develop. The specialisations described here are best understood as areas of emphasis rather than rigid, permanent job titles.
