Walk into any library today and you will see far more than shelves of books. You will find databases, digital archives, repositories, and a professional who manages all of it. The librarian of the twenty-first century is no longer a quiet keeper of books behind a desk. Over the centuries, this role has changed completely, moving from guarding physical collections to managing knowledge in every form it takes. Understanding this transformation helps explain why library and information science (LIS) has become one of the most dynamic professions of the digital era.

From custodians to knowledge managers
The story of librarianship is almost as old as writing itself. In ancient times, libraries were attached to temples and palaces, and the people who managed them were scholars treated as custodians of knowledge. Their main job was to collect texts, preserve them, and keep them safe. The value of a librarian was measured by how well a collection survived, not by how easily people could use it.
This custodial model lasted for a very long time. Even as printed books spread and public libraries opened in the nineteenth century, the core idea stayed the same. A librarian was someone who selected materials, cared for them, and protected them from damage or loss. The focus was on the object, the book, rather than on the person who needed the information inside it.
The shift began when the sheer volume of recorded knowledge grew beyond what any single collection could simply store. As scholars and researchers across the last century moved into the present one, the librarian’s job widened from selecting and caring for materials to providing active access to them. Today the same professional is expected to evaluate digital databases, acquire licenses, and connect users with both physical and electronic resources.
What knowledge management changed
The most important shift in recent decades has been the move from managing books to managing knowledge. Knowledge management treats information as a resource that must be captured, organised, shared, and reused, not just stored. Some scholars argue that this is simply a new name for what librarians have always done. As one influential study noted, knowledge management has been described as a new label for long-standing library practice.
Still, the change in mindset is real. A knowledge manager does not wait for users to come and search. They actively collect knowledge from different sources, combine it with existing material, and push it out to the people who need it. Three roles are often proposed for these professionals: managing knowledge repositories, helping knowledge flow and communication, and adding value to the information an organisation holds. The librarian, in this view, becomes a partner in research and decision-making rather than a gatekeeper.
The rise of documentation officers and information scientists
Long before computers, a new idea was already reshaping the profession. In the late nineteenth century, the Belgian thinker Paul Otlet argued that simply cataloguing books was not enough. He believed the real unit of knowledge was the document, which could be an article, a report, a chart, or even a fragment of data. Along with Henri La Fontaine, he founded the International Institute of Bibliography in 1895, an organisation that later became the International Federation for Documentation.
This was the start of the documentation movement. Its goal was bold: to organise all recorded knowledge so it could be retrieved by anyone, anywhere. Otlet is now regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of modern information science. The movement created a need for a new kind of professional, the documentation officer, who specialised in indexing, abstracting, and retrieving specific pieces of information rather than whole books.
The Indian story of documentation
This shift had a strong impact here as well, largely thanks to S. R. Ranganathan, widely regarded as the father of library science, documentation, and information science in India. A mathematician by training, he developed the Five Laws of Library Science and the Colon Classification, giving the profession both theoretical depth and respectability.
Ranganathan also helped build the institutions that turned documentation into a recognised career. He chaired the Documentation Committee formed after independence and was closely involved in setting up the Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre (INSDOC) in 1951. INSDOC provided scientific documentation services such as abstracting, indexing, and translation, and later merged with another body in 2002 to form what became part of today’s national science communication institutes.
Around the same time, the Annals of Library Science was launched in 1954 with Ranganathan as its first editor, giving Indian information professionals a platform to publish research. These developments created a clear distinction between the traditional librarian and the information scientist, a specialist who applied scientific methods to organising and supplying information, especially for research and industry.
Why specialised skills became essential
As science and industry expanded, decision-makers needed precise information quickly. A general collection of books could not meet this demand. Information scientists and documentation officers filled the gap with services like selective dissemination of information, where relevant material is sent directly to a user based on their interests. This required new skills: subject expertise, an understanding of classification systems, and the ability to design databases. The profession was no longer about caring for a building full of books; it was about engineering access to knowledge.
Digital librarianship and the impact of technology
The arrival of computers and the internet pushed the profession into its most dramatic phase of change. Where information once lived only on shelves, it now lives in databases, digital repositories, and the cloud. The modern professional has shifted, in the words of one recent study, from a custodian of print collections to a facilitator of digital knowledge ecosystems.
This shift has produced entirely new job titles. Today’s library professionals work as digital librarians, system librarians, repository managers, digital curators, and information managers. Each role demands a different mix of skills, but all of them assume comfort with technology. The same study lists expanded responsibilities including digital resource management, metadata creation, digital preservation, and familiarity with automation and artificial intelligence tools.
New responsibilities of the digital professional
Three areas capture how much the role has grown. First is data curation. The explosion of digital information has created a need for professionals who can organise and preserve data for the long term. Librarians are well suited to this because of their training in organising information, and the work now includes building systems to arrange digital data, setting metadata standards, and maintaining data quality.
Second is research support and open access. Academic libraries increasingly help researchers share their work openly. A recent survey of academic library professionals found that their evolving roles now include data curation, policy advocacy, and training researchers in open science practices. The librarian has become an active member of the research process rather than a service at the end of it.
Third is digital literacy and bridging the digital divide. As information moves online, not everyone has the skills to find and judge it. Librarians now teach users how to evaluate the quality of online information and help connect communities to digital resources. In this sense, the profession has taken on a social mission that goes well beyond lending books.
The challenges that come with change
This transformation is not without difficulties. Studies on data and AI in libraries point to real gaps in skills, infrastructure, and funding. Surveys here have shown keen interest in adopting tools like artificial intelligence, but also limited training, inadequate funding, and concerns about privacy and algorithmic bias. Technology also becomes outdated quickly, so professionals must keep learning throughout their careers. Continuous professional development is no longer optional; it is the only way to stay relevant.
A profession defined by service, not setting
Looking across this long history, one theme stands out. The location of the library and the format of its materials have changed many times, but the core purpose has not. Whether a professional is preserving an ancient manuscript, indexing a scientific report, or curating a research dataset, the goal is the same: connecting people with the knowledge they need. As the field has often noted, where a library exists matters less than what a librarian actually does for the people they serve.
This is why the profession continues to thrive even as books move from paper to screen. The custodian, the documentation officer, the information scientist, and the digital librarian are not separate jobs that replaced one another. They are layers of the same evolving role, each one added as society’s relationship with information grew more complex.
