Ranganathan published his five laws in a book in 1931, and the fifth law captures a truth that the other four only hint at. He argued that a library grows in three directions at once: its collection of documents, its community of readers, and its staff. Because all three keep expanding, the library must be designed and managed with that growth in mind.
To explain this, Ranganathan compared library growth to the growth of a living body. A new library behaves like a child, growing rapidly in every dimension as it builds its collection and attracts users. A mature library behaves more like an adult. Its physical size stabilises, but it keeps renewing itself by replacing old, unused books with new ones and welcoming fresh readers as older patrons move on. This distinction matters because it tells librarians that growth never stops; it only changes character.
The deeper message is about adaptation. Ranganathan saw the library as an institution that must continuously respond to its environment, rethinking how it collects, organises, and preserves information for future generations. A library that refuses to change eventually becomes irrelevant to the people it serves.

The role of libraries in education and research has shifted dramatically since Ranganathan’s era. The traditional view of a library as a quiet hall lined with shelves no longer captures what these institutions do. Today, college and university libraries function as learning hubs, research support centres, and gateways to a vast world of electronic resources.
From book repositories to knowledge hubs
Modern academic libraries support far more than reading. They provide access to subscription databases, e-journals, institutional repositories, and digital archives. Scholars now use the library not only to find existing knowledge but to create new knowledge through research data services and open-access publishing support. This reflects exactly what Ranganathan predicted. As one academic study notes, the fifth law requires libraries to employ genuine creativity and innovation in the digital era rather than making random, reactive changes.
The word “book” keeps expanding

Ranganathan stressed that library buildings must accommodate growth in shelving, reading areas, and patron use. Good space planning anticipates the future rather than reacting to overcrowding. Many institutions now design flexible, modular spaces that can be reconfigured as needs change. Reading rooms convert into collaborative study zones, and stack areas shrink as collections move online, freeing room for maker spaces, group discussion rooms, and quiet research pods.
Digital integration
The most visible form of growth today is digital. A landmark example is the National Digital Library of India, sponsored by the Ministry of Education through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology. It works as a single-window virtual repository that uses federated searching to help learners find the right resource quickly. The platform demonstrates organic growth on a massive scale. Hosted by IIT Kharagpur, it connects users to more than 81 million pieces of educational content in over 100 languages, including many vernacular languages used across the country.
This kind of integration shows how a library grows without necessarily growing its building. Cloud storage, digital archives, and shared consortia let a single institution offer far more than its physical shelves could ever hold. The organism extends its reach through networks rather than walls.
Weeding and collection management
Growth, however, is not only about adding. A common misunderstanding of the fifth law is that a growing library simply keeps accumulating material forever. Ranganathan’s own analogy corrects this. An adult organism stays healthy by replacing old cells, not by swelling endlessly. For libraries, this renewal process is called weeding.
Why weeding matters
Weeding is the systematic removal of outdated, damaged, or unused materials from a collection. Far from being destructive, it is an essential and ongoing component of collection management. An optimal collection is reviewed regularly for accuracy, currency, usage patterns, diversity, and gaps in subject coverage. Weeding maximises a collection’s usefulness, ensures it continues to support teaching and research, and frees shelf space for new acquisitions.
Imagine a medical reference section filled with textbooks from twenty years ago. Keeping them does not make the library richer; it actively misleads students with obsolete information. This is why librarians often say that a smaller, current collection serves users better than a large, decaying one.
How weeding decisions are made
Responsible weeding follows a written collection development policy rather than personal whim. Common criteria include currency, usage statistics, and physical condition. Materials superseded by newer editions, items that have not circulated for years, and books damaged beyond reasonable repair are typical candidates for removal. In academic settings, faculty input is often sought because subject experts can judge whether an older work retains scholarly or historical value.
The balance is delicate. Weed too aggressively and you lose valuable historical or low-use specialist works. Weed too little and the collection becomes bloated and hard to navigate. Managing this tension is one of the clearest practical applications of the fifth law in daily library work.
The future of libraries
If the fifth law tells us anything, it is that the library of tomorrow will look different from the library of today. The next phase of growth is being shaped by artificial intelligence, big data, and smart library systems.
Artificial intelligence in the library
AI is already reshaping core library functions. It is being used to assist with resource discovery, metadata management, and personalised learning support, and a large share of libraries are actively planning to integrate it further into their services. AI handles routine, repetitive tasks so that librarians can focus on the deeper expertise that advanced research demands. As one study observes, AI has the potential to free librarians from routine work and turn the library into a centre for research using big data.
Big data and personalised services
Big data analytics allows libraries to understand how their collections are actually used. By studying borrowing and search patterns, librarians can predict demand, optimise shelf space, and recommend relevant resources to individual users, much like a streaming service suggests content. This data-driven approach directly supports both space planning and weeding decisions, making the organism’s growth far more intelligent than guesswork ever allowed.
Smart library systems
The concept of the “Smart Library” pushes this evolution further. Powered by artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, smart libraries connect devices, sensors, and automated systems to deliver smart service, smart sustainability, and smart security. RFID tags and sensors enable self-checkout, real-time inventory tracking, and automated shelving. Some libraries are already experimenting with automated storage and retrieval systems that use robotics to fetch books on demand from mass storage facilities, with the vision of a library that operates smoothly with minimal direct staffing.
Looking ahead, emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality are expected to transform libraries into spaces offering immersive experiences, from virtual tours to AR-enhanced exhibits and VR learning environments. None of this replaces the librarian. Instead, it represents the organism growing new capabilities, exactly as the fifth law anticipated.
Why this law endures
Writing more than sixty years ago, the influential librarians Crawford and Gorman observed that when one looks beyond the language of 1931, Ranganathan’s laws remain as valid for the librarianship of tomorrow as they were when first written. The fifth law is the engine behind this durability. It does not prescribe a fixed model of what a library should be. It only insists that the library must keep changing to serve the people who need it.
This is why the same principle that once justified adding more shelves now justifies adopting AI, building digital repositories, and weeding outdated collections. The methods change with each generation, but the underlying logic stays constant. A library that grows, adapts, and renews itself remains alive. A library that stops doing so quietly fades into irrelevance.
