Dr. S. R. Ranganathan wrote his Five Laws of Library Science in 1931, long before computers, the internet, or artificial intelligence existed. Yet these five simple statements-books are for use, every reader his or her book, every book its reader, save the time of the reader, and the library is a growing organism-have refused to fade into history. Instead, scholars across the world keep returning to them, rewording them, and stretching them to fit new technologies. The result is a fascinating body of work that shows just how flexible Ranganathan’s thinking really was. Let us look at how these laws have been reinterpreted for an age of websites, software, knowledge networks, and intelligent machines.

Why the five laws needed reinterpretation

Ranganathan built his laws around three basic elements: the book, the reader, and the library. In 1931, these words meant exactly what they said. A book was a printed volume, a reader was a person walking into a building, and a library was a physical room full of shelves. But information no longer lives only on paper, and readers rarely walk to a building to find it.

The clever insight that many later scholars noticed is this: if you replace “book” with “document,” “information,” or “digital resource,” and replace “library” with “database” or “network,” the laws still make perfect sense. As Alireza Noruzi observed, even when you swap out the original keywords for new elements, Ranganathan’s laws continue to work remarkably well. This is why so many adaptations exist-the underlying principles are about access, service, and growth, not about paper and ink.

It is worth remembering that this updating began early. In 1992, the centenary of Ranganathan’s birth, several scholars started revisiting the laws. Around the same period, James Rettig proposed a “Sixth Law”-every reader his freedom-suggesting that users should be free to choose how they receive information, whether through guided instruction or direct access.

Alternative versions of the five laws

Over the decades, a surprising number of thinkers have created their own versions of Ranganathan’s laws. Each version reflects the concerns of its time and field.

Michael Gorman’s five new laws of librarianship

The most famous reinterpretation comes from Michael Gorman, a British-born librarian and past president of the American Library Association. Working with Walt Crawford, he published Future Libraries: Dreams, Madness, and Realities in 1995, where he proposed five entirely new laws:

1. Libraries serve humanity. 2. Respect all forms by which knowledge is communicated. 3. Use technology intelligently to enhance service. 4. Protect free access to knowledge. 5. Honour the past and create the future.

It is important to understand that Gorman did not simply revise Ranganathan’s wording. He wrote a completely separate set of laws from the viewpoint of a librarian practising in a technological society. His third and fifth laws are especially relevant today, because they directly address how libraries should handle technology and how they should balance tradition with innovation. Gorman himself treated these as ideals rather than rigid rules, warning that librarians should not apply them mechanically to every situation.

Noruzi’s five laws of the web

In 2004, Alireza Noruzi took a different approach. Instead of writing about libraries, he applied Ranganathan’s structure directly to the World Wide Web. His Five Laws of the Web read:

1. Web resources are for use. 2. Every user his or her web resource. 3. Every web resource its user. 4. Save the time of the user. 5. The Web is a growing organism.

Notice how closely these mirror the originals. The first law, for example, argues that web pages are not statues to be admired from a distance-they exist to be clicked, read, and used. Noruzi pointed out that password walls, paywalls, and restricted-access collections are the modern equivalent of medieval libraries that chained their books to the shelves. The principle is identical to Ranganathan’s: information serves no purpose if it is locked away.

Other notable adaptations

The list does not end there. Sanjaya Mishra proposed principles of distance education in 1998. Lennart Björneborn developed five laws of web connectivity in 2004, later exploring link structures across academic web spaces in his doctoral research. Virginia Walter wrote five laws of children’s librarianship, and Carol Simpson suggested edits to account for the richness of modern media formats. There was even a satirical version by Jim Thompson-“books are for profit, every reader his bill”-written as a protest against the commercialisation of library services. Each adaptation shows that Ranganathan created not just five rules but a reusable template for thinking about any system that connects people with information.

The web and information science perspective

The move from libraries to the open web is the most natural extension of Ranganathan’s thinking. The web, like a library, is fundamentally about connecting resources with the people who need them.

Applying the laws to online databases

Noruzi argued that the five laws of the web apply not only to the general web but also to online databases and digital library services. Consider the third law, “every web resource its user.” On a website, this means a webmaster must make sure every page is properly indexed by search engines, displayed clearly, and linked through a sensible navigation structure. A page that exists but cannot be found is, for practical purposes, lost-much like a book misplaced on the wrong shelf. The same logic governs how academic databases tag, categorise, and surface their articles so that researchers can actually discover them.

The fourth law, “save the time of the user,” translates directly into website usability. A well-designed site map, a working search box on every page, and fast retrieval of structured data all serve this single principle. Frustrated and disappointed users are the clearest sign that a system has failed in its duty.

The five laws of the software library

One of the most creative extensions came from Mentor Cana in 2003, who applied the laws to the open-source software movement. He reasoned that if software, like a book, contains objective knowledge, then the same principles should apply. His five laws of the software library became:

1. Software is for use. 2. Every user his or her software. 3. Every software its user. 4. Save the time of the user. 5. A software library is a growing organism.

Cana believed that the open-source community could learn valuable lessons from how libraries function. Free access to source code, the matching of useful tools to the right developers, and the constant updating of code repositories all echo Ranganathan’s century-old principles. There is also a meaningful link here to the open-access movement in scholarly publishing, where freely available research simultaneously satisfies the idea that every document should reach its reader and that knowledge should not be locked behind barriers.

Relevance in knowledge management

Ranganathan’s laws have travelled far beyond the walls of any library. In the field of knowledge management-broadly defined as the process of identifying, organising, storing, and sharing information within an organisation-these principles have found a natural home.

Businesses and institutions today sit on enormous reserves of internal data, documents, and expertise. The same challenges Ranganathan addressed in 1931 reappear in the corporate context: How do we make sure knowledge gets used rather than buried? How do we connect the right information to the right employee? How do we save people’s time? Some scholars have gone so far as to describe Ranganathan’s five laws as the guiding principles of knowledge management itself, calling them statements of eternal relevance for any knowledge-based society.

The connection to broader information access is striking. The same writers point out that modern movements-open data, open government, open access to scientific research, and free culture in education-all reflect what Ranganathan envisioned through his principle of non-discrimination in access. Tim Berners-Lee, who designed the web, is sometimes described as walking in Ranganathan’s footsteps by making information freely available to everyone, while going a step further by letting ordinary people create knowledge too.

For organisations, the practical lessons are clear. The second and third laws push companies toward personalised systems that recommend the right resource to the right person, often through algorithms and data analysis. The fifth law reminds managers that a knowledge system is never finished-it must keep growing and adapting as the organisation and its people change.

Future considerations: AI, automation, and virtual reality

If Ranganathan’s laws have survived the arrival of the web and the rise of knowledge management, the next great test is artificial intelligence. Here, the fifth law-the library is a growing organism-becomes the most important of all, because it explicitly invites the profession to embrace change.

How AI reshapes service

Artificial intelligence is already transforming the daily work of libraries and information systems. AI tools can automatically extract keywords, assign subject headings, and classify materials, dramatically reducing the manual labour involved in cataloguing and indexing. Research into AI-driven library services reports substantial gains in efficiency, including faster metadata generation and shorter search times through semantic and natural-language querying. Recommendation systems on platforms used by students and researchers personalise content in a way that brings the second and third laws-matching readers to resources-to life through machine learning.

This is precisely what Gorman’s third law called for: using technology intelligently to enhance service. AI does not replace the principle; it becomes a powerful new tool for fulfilling it. The National Library of Finland, for instance, has been an early adopter of automated, AI-based subject indexing.

The human role in an automated world

Automation raises a natural worry about jobs. The emerging view is that purely routine tasks may decline, while roles that emphasise critical thinking, user education, and human judgement remain resilient. Demand for information professionals who can supervise automated systems and interpret the data they produce is expected to grow. In this sense, the fourth law-save the time of the user-is being radically advanced, but the human professional shifts from doing the routine work to designing, guiding, and overseeing the machines that do it.

There are real cautions here too. Automated systems that recommend content or manage digital archives must respect copyright, data protection, and intellectual property law. Gorman’s fourth law, protecting free access to knowledge, takes on new urgency when algorithms decide what information people see and when commercial pressures threaten open access.

Virtual reality and the growing organism

Looking further ahead, immersive technologies like virtual reality point to entirely new kinds of “documents” and “spaces.” A virtual reading room or a three-dimensional data environment is hard to imagine within the 1931 definition of a library, yet the fifth law anticipates exactly this kind of expansion. Ranganathan identified two types of growth: growth in the quantity of materials and growth in their quality through replacement and improvement. A library that adds virtual experiences to its services is simply a growing organism doing what the fifth law always expected it to do.

What remains constant through every one of these reinterpretations is the central idea. Whether we are talking about a printed book, a web page, a software module, a corporate knowledge base, or an AI-generated recommendation, the purpose is the same: to connect people with the information they need, as efficiently and openly as possible. That is the genius of Ranganathan’s framework. He did not describe a technology; he described a relationship, and relationships outlast the tools that serve them.
