Every time you check exam results online, pay a utility bill through a mobile app, or look up a research paper from a library database, you are using a resource that has quietly become one of the most valuable assets of our time: information. A few decades ago, wealth was measured mostly in land, factories, and raw materials. Today, the ability to create, access, and apply information shapes how countries grow, how businesses compete, and how ordinary people live their daily lives. This shift has been so profound that scholars now describe modern societies as information societies or knowledge societies. Let us explore how information became this powerful and what its impact means for society and the economy.

Information as a new form of social wealth

For most of human history, the things that made a nation or a person wealthy were physical: fertile land, gold, machinery, and labour. Information has changed that equation. In a knowledge society, the creation, distribution, and use of information and knowledge has become the most important factor of production, with intellectual capital becoming a more powerful producer of wealth than land, labour, or physical capital.

This is not just a theoretical claim. Consider how the world’s most valuable companies generate their wealth. Firms like Google, Amazon, and Meta are valuable not because of factories or physical property, but because of the data, algorithms, and intellectual property they control. The shift represents a fundamental change in how value is created, where ideas, creativity, and skills matter more than tangible assets.

Why information behaves differently from other resources

Information has unusual qualities that make it special as a form of wealth. Unlike a tonne of steel or a sack of grain, information does not get used up when shared. A research finding can be read by thousands of students at once without diminishing. It can be copied at almost no cost, transmitted across the world in seconds, and combined with other information to create entirely new knowledge. These properties make information a uniquely renewable and expandable resource, which is exactly why economies built around it can grow in ways that resource-based economies cannot.

The stages of societal transformation

To understand how information became central, it helps to look at how human societies have evolved through broad stages. The American sociologist Daniel Bell provided one of the most influential frameworks for this in his 1973 book The Coming of Post-Industrial Society. He identified three major phases of economic development, where the bulk of the workforce moves first from agriculture to manufacturing, and then on to services.

The agrarian society

In the agrarian or pre-industrial stage, society was dominated by agriculture. Wealth came from land, and most people worked on farms. Knowledge existed, of course, but it was largely tied to tradition, religion, and practical skills passed down through generations. The pace of change was slow, and economic life revolved around extracting resources from nature.

The industrial society

The Industrial Revolution shifted the centre of economic activity to the manufacture of goods. Factories, machines, and mass production defined this stage. Wealth was created through capital and labour, and large numbers of workers moved from rural areas into cities to work in industry. An industrial society, as Bell described it, rests on a labour theory of value, where progress proceeds largely through labour-saving improvements.

The post-industrial society

The third stage, which Bell called the post-industrial society, is dominated by services rather than goods. According to Bell, there are three components to this society: a shift from manufacturing to services, the centrality of new science-based industries, and the rise of new technical elites. In this stage, theoretical knowledge becomes the central organising principle, and experts become primary advisors to government and business.

An important point Bell made is that these stages do not completely replace one another. The post-industrial world does not wholly displace the agrarian and industrial worlds but overlies them, transforming them in essential ways. India illustrates this clearly. A large part of the population still depends on agriculture, manufacturing continues to expand, and at the same time the country has built a globally recognised information technology and services sector. All three layers coexist.

The knowledge theory of value

What truly distinguishes the post-industrial stage is its underlying logic. In his 1980 work on the social framework of the information society, Bell argued that this new society rests on a knowledge theory of value, where knowledge has replaced productive labour as the source of value that yields future profits. Information processing has the ability to transform almost any kind of activity in an economy, from education and telecommunications to health services and social benefit systems. This is why information is not just one resource among many; it is the resource that reshapes all the others.

How information shapes daily life

The transformation is not confined to economics textbooks. Information now touches nearly every part of ordinary life, often in ways we no longer notice because they have become normal.

Education and research

Access to information has reshaped how people learn. Open educational platforms, digital libraries, online courses, and research repositories mean that a student no longer needs to be physically present in an elite institution to access quality material. Knowledge societies place strong emphasis on lifelong learning and the ability to adapt to new ideas. For researchers, the ability to search vast databases, access journals electronically, and collaborate across distances has accelerated the pace of discovery dramatically. The very nature of scholarship now depends on efficient information systems.

Governance and citizen services

Perhaps the most visible everyday impact is in how citizens interact with their government. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology launched the Digital India programme with the vision of transforming the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy, ensuring digital access, inclusion, and empowerment while bridging the digital divide.

The results are tangible. E-governance has improved the speed, transparency, and inclusiveness of service delivery. Through the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile trinity, over 47 crore people have gained access to formal banking, while portals for filing taxes and grievances have simplified compliance. By replacing physical paperwork with digital processes, these systems have enhanced transparency, accessibility, and efficiency in public service delivery. Citizens can now track applications, make payments, and access services around the clock without visiting a government office.

Information as empowerment

Access to information also strengthens democratic participation. When citizens can see real-time data on government spending and project implementation, it becomes a powerful tool to combat corruption and promote accountability. E-governance empowers people by giving them access to information and enhancing the government’s responsiveness, which is a meaningful shift in the relationship between the state and the individual.

The role of information and communication technology

None of this transformation would have been possible without rapid advances in information and communication technology, commonly known as ICT. If information is the new wealth, ICT is the infrastructure that allows it to be created, stored, moved, and applied at scale.

Technology as the engine of change

The knowledge economy is intrinsically tied to ICT advancements. Digital platforms facilitate the storage, analysis, and distribution of knowledge, making it accessible to wider audiences. Technologies ranging from cloud computing to artificial intelligence enable the efficient processing of enormous amounts of information, which in turn drives innovation. ICT has also created entirely new sectors such as e-commerce, financial technology, and digital media, reshaping traditional industries and opening new pathways for economic growth.

The economy itself has evolved from the classic industrial model into what is now called the knowledge economy, where traditional businesses become increasingly dependent on internet-related technologies. A small business owner using digital payments, a farmer checking market prices on a mobile phone, and a multinational running operations across continents are all participating in this same technological shift.

The challenge of the digital divide

It would be incomplete to describe ICT only in glowing terms. The same technology that empowers can also exclude. Many citizens, especially in rural areas, still lack reliable access to the internet and digital devices, and economic disparities limit the ability of some groups to engage with digital services. This digital divide can lead to unequal access to opportunities and government services, leaving some people behind. Privacy and data security concerns add another layer of complexity, as more personal information moves online. A genuine knowledge society must therefore work not just on building technology but on ensuring that its benefits reach everyone fairly.

From information society to knowledge society

It is worth noting a subtle but important distinction. An information society focuses on the technology and the flow of information itself. A knowledge society goes a step further: it is concerned with whether that information is actually used effectively to create value, solve problems, and improve lives. Information societies rely heavily on IT-based services, while knowledge societies foster research, education, and knowledge-driven progress.

The goal, then, is not simply to make information available but to build the institutions, skills, and culture that turn information into genuine knowledge and wisdom. This is where libraries, educational institutions, and information professionals play a crucial role. They are not just storehouses of information but active partners in helping society make sense of it. As more nations recognise this, the ability to manage and apply knowledge is becoming the defining feature of economic and social leadership in the twenty-first century.
