Classifying a book about a single language can get surprisingly detailed. Is the book about French grammar, French pronunciation, or a French dictionary? The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) handles this neatly through Table 4: Subdivisions of Individual Languages and Language Families. It is the smallest and simplest of the auxiliary tables, yet it brings real precision to the 400s. This post explains what Table 4 does, how to attach its notation to a language number step by step, where it works well, and the cases where it cannot be used at all.

Understanding Table 4 in DDC

The DDC organises all knowledge into ten main classes, and Class 400 covers Language. Within this class, the numbers 420-490 are reserved for individual languages and language families. Table 4 exists to break these language numbers down further, so that a library can separate the grammar of a language from its dictionaries, its phonetics, or its dialects. According to the handbook by M. P. Satija and Alex Kyrios, Table 4 is used exclusively with the main numbers for individual languages, which makes it far more focused than tables that apply across many subjects.

One important rule applies to almost every auxiliary table. The notation in Table 4 is never used alone. It only attaches to a language base number when the schedule or another table instructs you to do so. You will recognise these subdivisions by the dash in front of them, written as -1, -2, -5, and so on. The dash is only a signal that the notation is incomplete on its own; you drop it once you join the digits to a language number.

The aspects Table 4 captures

Table 4 provides a small, mnemonic set of subdivisions. The same digit means the same thing across every language, which is what makes the system easy to remember. The official Table 4 summary published by OCLC lists the main subdivisions:

-1 Writing systems, phonology, and phonetics of the standard form of the language (this covers scripts, sounds, spelling, and pronunciation).
-2 Etymology of the standard form of the language.
-3 Dictionaries of the standard form of the language.
-5 Grammar of the standard form of the language (including syntax, word classes, and morphology).
-7 Historical and geographic variations, and modern nongeographic variations (dialects, slang, pidgins, and early forms).
-8 Standard usage, or prescriptive linguistics (including applied linguistics, second-language teaching, and translation).

Notice that the digit 4 and the digit 6 are not used as primary subdivisions here. The structure deliberately mirrors the way linguistics topics appear under 410, which is the general linguistics number. This parallel was introduced in the 18th edition and has made building numbers in the 400s much more consistent.

Adding linguistic notation step by step

Building a number with Table 4 follows a clear sequence. Once you understand the logic, the process becomes mechanical.

Step 1: Identify the base number for the language

Every language in 420-490 has a base number, which is the starting point you build on. For the major languages, the base number is simply the first two digits. English uses the base number 42, German uses 43, French uses 44, and Spanish uses 46. Languages that do not have their own short number sit under 490 and have longer base numbers. Swedish, for example, uses the base number 439.7.

Step 2: Choose the correct Table 4 subdivision

Decide which aspect of the language the book actually discusses. A book on rules of sentence construction is grammar, so you select -5. A book on how the language is pronounced is phonetics, so you select -1. A dictionary takes -3.

Step 3: Join the notation and place the decimal

Add the Table 4 digit to the base number, dropping the dash. The DDC inserts a decimal point after the third digit whenever the resulting number is longer than three digits. The OCLC instructions give a clear example: Swedish grammar joins the base number 439.7 with the grammar notation -5 to produce 439.75. For a short base number, no decimal is needed. English grammar joins the base number 42 with -5 to give 425, which is confirmed in the DDC schedule for Class 400.

Step 4: Add standard subdivisions if required

You can extend the number further using notation from Table 1 (Standard Subdivisions) when appropriate. For instance, -509 in Table 4 marks the history of grammar, so the history of Swedish grammar becomes 439.7509. This layering is what allows the DDC to express very specific topics within a single notation string.

Practical applications

The clearest way to see Table 4 in action is through everyday library materials. The same three steps apply whether the language is European or Indian.

Grammar books

Grammar is one of the most common subjects on a language shelf, and it always takes the subdivision -5. A grammar of standard English is 425, a grammar of French is 445, and a grammar of German is 435. For an Indian language, the same logic holds. Hindi sits at the base number 491.43, so a book on Hindi grammar becomes 491.435. Sanskrit uses the base number 491.2, so a Sanskrit grammar becomes 491.25. The mnemonic value is obvious: the final 5 always signals grammar.

Pronunciation and phonetics studies

Works on sounds, spelling, scripts, and pronunciation fall under -1. The phonetics of standard English is therefore 421. A study of Hindi phonology builds on the same base number to give 491.431. This subdivision also covers writing systems, so a study of the Devanagari script as used for a particular language belongs here too. The University of Pittsburgh’s chapter on the Dewey Decimal Classification explains that these subdivisions work just like the form divisions in Table 3, giving the 400s a predictable pattern.

Dictionaries and translations

Dictionaries of a single language use -3, which is why dictionaries of standard English are 423 and dictionaries of standard Dutch are built as 439.313. Bilingual dictionaries follow specific rules. A bilingual dictionary with entry words in only one language is classed with that language, so an English-French dictionary aimed at English speakers is 423.

Translation is treated as part of standard usage, so it falls under -8. This subdivision covers translating to and from other languages, interpreting, and applied linguistics for learners. Standard English usage, including translation, sits at 428. This is also where works for people learning the language as a second language are placed, which makes -8 especially useful for the large number of language-teaching materials found in Indian academic libraries.

Limitations and exceptions

Table 4 is powerful within its narrow lane, but it has firm boundaries. Knowing where it stops is as important as knowing how to use it.

It applies only to 420-490. Table 4 cannot be attached to numbers outside the individual-language range. It also cannot be used unless the schedule or table explicitly instructs you, with the partial exception of Table 1, which can be added more freely. The introduction to the DDC stresses that notation from these tables is added only as instructed.

Comprehensive works skip the subdivision. If a book covers a language as a whole rather than one aspect, you use the base number alone. Comprehensive works on standard French are simply 440, not 440 plus a subdivision.

Major languages have built-in numbers. For English, French, German, and similar languages, the schedule already spells out the subdivisions as 421-428, 441-448, and so on. You do not manually add Table 4 notation in these cases because the work has already been done for you. Some of these positions carry modifications or are unassigned. For English, the numbers 424 and 426 are no longer used, having formerly held thesauruses and prosodies, as shown in the schedule maintained by Librarianship Studies and Information Technology.

Some topics are redirected elsewhere. Table 4 includes notes that send certain materials out of Class 400 entirely. A subject dictionary is classed with its subject, so a dictionary of medicine is 610.3, not a language number. Translating a specific work is classed with that work; translating the Bible into English is 220.5, not a Table 4 number. Literature is never classed here either, since creative works belong in the 800s with Table 3.

The -7 subdivision has a strict condition. The notation -7 for historical and geographic variations is used only for works that stress the differences among forms of a language. A book that simply uses a dialect does not qualify; the book must focus on what makes that dialect distinctive.

For languages without a dedicated short number, an extra step is needed before Table 4 can even be applied. You first build the base number using Table 6 (Languages) under 490, and only then add the Table 4 subdivision. This is why many Indian and regional language numbers look longer and always carry a decimal point.
