Every library holds books written for particular kinds of people and about particular kinds of people. A handbook of accounting for lawyers, a cookery guide for nurses, a study of music among soldiers, a collection of essays by surgeons. These works share a subject, but they are tied to a specific group of people. The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) had a dedicated tool for exactly this situation: Table 7, the table of Groups of Persons. Understanding how it worked tells you a great deal about how Dewey lets a classifier capture not just what a book is about, but who it concerns.

What Table 7 was and how it organised people
The Dewey Decimal Classification divides all knowledge into ten main classes and then refines them with auxiliary tables. These tables are never used alone; their notation is always attached to a number taken from the main schedules. Table 7 was one such auxiliary table, and its job was narrow but important: it provided notation for groups of persons, organised by their profession, occupation, social status, and other personal characteristics.
The logic of Table 7 mirrored the structure of the whole scheme. People were grouped according to the disciplines they were associated with. So persons connected with religion, with the social sciences, with the natural sciences, with the arts, with literature, and so on each had a place in the table. A musician sat under the arts; a lawyer under law; a scientist under the sciences. This meant a classifier could specify, with a single string of digits, that a book dealt with a defined occupational or social group rather than the subject in general.
It is essential to remember that Table 7 notation could never stand by itself on a shelf. Like the other auxiliary tables, it had meaning only when combined with a base number. A reader curious about the broader system will find a clear account of how number building and citation order works across all the Dewey tables, and Table 7 followed those same principles.
Classifying occupations and professions
The most common use of Table 7 was to identify people by their work. This is where examples like lawyers, surgeons, and military personnel become useful.
Why occupation matters in classification
A book is often aimed at a particular profession even when its core subject is something general. Think of a guide to financial planning written specifically for doctors, or a manual of etiquette intended for diplomats. The subject (financial planning, etiquette) belongs to one part of the schedules, but the work is shaped entirely by its intended occupational group. Table 7 gave the classifier a way to record that occupational dimension so that such a book did not get lost among general works on the same subject.
Lawyers, surgeons, and the armed forces
Each of these professions had a home within Table 7’s occupational structure. Lawyers were grouped with persons associated with law, surgeons with persons associated with medicine, and military personnel with persons associated with the armed forces. When a work treated a subject specifically for or about one of these groups, the classifier could attach the relevant Table 7 notation to build a more precise number.
A simpler version of the same idea survives directly in the schedules. In class 305, which deals with social groups, an occupation such as the work of a librarian is classed at 305.9092. This shows the underlying principle clearly: occupation is treated as a defining attribute of a group of persons, and the notation is built up step by step.
Using standard subdivision 088
Here is the most practical thing a student needs to know. A classifier could not simply attach Table 7 wherever they liked. Table 7 was reached mainly through a gateway in Table 1, the Standard Subdivisions. That gateway was the notation -088, “Occupational and religious groups.”
How the gateway worked
Standard subdivisions are the recurring forms and approaches that can attach to almost any subject, such as dictionaries, periodicals, history, and education. The Cambridge guidance on the flexibility and limits of number building explains that standard subdivisions are the one set of notations a classifier may add freely, without waiting for a specific instruction. The notation -088 carried an instruction allowing it to be extended by Table 7 whenever the classifier needed to specify the occupational group involved.
According to the teaching materials prepared by IGNOU on auxiliary tables and devices, Table 7 could be added on a classifier’s own initiative through this -088 route whenever it was needed, in much the same way that Table 2 areas can be added through -09. The other tables, by contrast, could usually be added only when a specific instruction in the schedule permitted it.
Applying it to the arts, music, and literature
The -088 gateway is what made Table 7 so useful for subjects in the arts. Suppose a library held a book on painting techniques written for art teachers, or a study of music intended for a particular professional group, or a collection of literature produced by members of a specific occupation. The classifier would start with the base number for the subject, add the standard subdivision -088 to signal “this is about an occupational group,” and then extend that with the appropriate Table 7 notation for the group in question.
The result was a number that told the reader, in one stroke, both the subject and the kind of people the work served. This is a good illustration of Dewey’s synthetic character: numbers are assembled from parts rather than always being listed ready-made in the schedules.
Complex cases and number construction
Building a number with Table 7 followed the same discipline as the rest of Dewey. You begin with a base number from the schedules, then append notation from the tables, always placing the decimal point after the third digit of the complete number. Where several characteristics of a work compete for attention, the classifier must follow the citation and preference order set out in the instructions, choosing which facet leads.
A helpful parallel comes from Table 5, the table of ethnic and national groups, which is reached through the neighbouring standard subdivision -089. A work on the ceramic arts of a particular ethnic group, for instance, is built as 738.089 followed by the Table 5 notation for that group. Table 7 behaved in the same way through -088, except that the appended notation described an occupational or social group rather than an ethnic one. This shows how the -08 family of standard subdivisions worked as a coordinated set of doorways into the different “groups of people” tables.
An important change you should know
There is one fact that often confuses students, and it matters for accuracy. Table 7 existed in editions such as DDC 19, 20, and 21, but it was removed in DDC 22, published in 2003. The official publisher, OCLC, records that Table 7 was deleted and replaced by the direct use of notation already available in the schedules and in notation -08 from Table 1. The change was made to improve classifier efficiency, removing a layer that duplicated provisions found elsewhere.
This is why a student working from an older edition will see Table 7 in full, while someone using a newer edition will not find it at all. The underlying need, classifying works by group of persons, did not disappear. It was simply handled through other parts of the scheme. So when you study Table 7, you are learning both a real classification device and a piece of Dewey’s evolution.
Why this still matters for classifiers
Even though the table itself is gone from current editions, the concept it embodied is alive. Libraries still need to distinguish a textbook of anatomy from a textbook of anatomy for nurses, or general military history from a study of military life as experienced by a particular service group. Knowing how Table 7 captured the “group of persons” facet helps a classifier understand why the standard subdivisions -088 and -092 carry the meanings they do, and how Dewey thinks about people as a dimension of any subject. That conceptual grounding transfers directly to working with the editions in use today.
