Walk into any library in India, and you will notice that books are not placed randomly on the shelves. A book on physics sits near other physics titles, and a volume on Indian history rests beside other history books. This order is not accidental. It is the work of a carefully designed system called the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), and at the heart of this system lie its schedules. These schedules are the master plan that maps the entire universe of human knowledge into neat, retrievable categories. Understanding them is the first real step toward mastering library classification.

What are schedules in DDC?

In the Dewey Decimal Classification, schedules are the detailed, numbered lists where all subjects of knowledge are arranged and assigned their class numbers. Think of them as the main directory of the entire scheme. When a classifier needs to find the correct number for a book, the schedules are the authoritative place to look. The schedules are the only place where complete information about the coverage and use of every number is given, which is why even a quick index reference must always be verified against them.

The DDC was first introduced by Melvil Dewey in 1876, and it has since gone through many revisions to keep pace with the constantly expanding world of knowledge. The most recent full print edition is the 23rd, published in 2011. Across all these editions, the schedules have retained one core feature: they organise knowledge by discipline, not merely by subject. This means a topic is placed according to the field of study that treats it, rather than the topic alone.

How the schedules are structured

The schedules follow a strict hierarchical pattern that moves from the general to the specific. The structure has three levels that every student of library science must know:

Ten main classes: The broadest level divides all knowledge into ten classes, numbered 000 to 900. This is called the first summary.

Hundred divisions: Each main class is split into ten divisions, producing a hundred divisions in total. This is the second summary.

Thousand sections: Each division is further split into ten sections, giving a thousand sections overall. This is the third summary.

The notation makes this hierarchy visible. The first digit in each three-digit number represents the main class, the second digit indicates the division, and the third digit shows the section. For example, 500 stands for science as a whole, 510 narrows it to mathematics, and 516 specifies geometry. Each added digit makes the subject more precise. Beyond the third digit, a decimal point allows for even finer subdivision, so a single subject can be broken down almost infinitely.

Generalities (000): the home for general knowledge

The first class, 000, is historically called Generalities and is now titled “Computer science, information and general works.” This class is unique because it holds subjects that either span many disciplines or do not fit neatly into any single field. It is the catch-all home for general and multidisciplinary materials.

This class is especially important for library and information science students, because library science itself lives here. The divisions of class 000 include data processing and computer science at 004, bibliography at 010, library and information sciences at 020, general encyclopedic works at 030, general serial publications at 050, general organisations and museum science at 060, news media and journalism at 070, general collections at 080, and manuscripts and rare books at 090.

Why journalism and library science share a class

It may seem odd that journalism and library science sit together, but the logic is sound. Both deal with the gathering, organising, and dissemination of information across all subjects, rather than with one specific topic. The division for the book and library activity covers writing systems, libraries, and book-related topics, while news media and publishing fall under 070. Since these activities touch every field of knowledge, they belong in the general class rather than in any specialised one.

Major disciplines covered by the schedules

Once we move beyond the generalities, the remaining nine classes cover the major disciplines of human knowledge. Each one represents a broad field, and together they account for the entire spectrum of subjects a library might hold.

From philosophy to history

Here is how the schedules divide the disciplines from 100 to 900:

100 Philosophy and psychology: This class covers metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic, and the various schools of psychology. It deals with fundamental questions about existence, the mind, and human behaviour.

200 Religion: This class encompasses world religions, comparative religion, mythology, and theology.

300 Social sciences: One of the largest classes, it includes sociology, statistics, political science, economics, law, public administration, education, commerce, and customs.

400 Language: This class covers linguistics and specific languages, including grammar, dictionaries of particular languages, and the study of language structure.

500 Pure sciences and mathematics: Also called natural sciences, this class holds mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, biology, botany, and zoology.

600 Technology (applied sciences): This class covers medicine and health, engineering, agriculture, home management, management, and manufacturing.

700 The arts: This includes architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, photography, music, and recreation such as sports and games.

800 Literature: This class covers the literature of specific languages, including poetry, drama, fiction, essays, and rhetoric.

900 Geography and history: This class holds geography, travel, biography, and the history of specific regions and time periods.

A useful point to remember is the relationship between language and literature. Class 400 comprises language and linguistics, while literature is given its own separate class at 800. This separation reflects how the schedules treat the study of a language and the creative writing produced in it as two distinct disciplines.

Examples of classification

The real value of the schedules becomes clear when we see how a number is actually built for a specific subject. The process moves step by step through the three summaries, narrowing the focus at each stage. Let us work through a few examples.

Building a number for human physiology

Suppose we need to classify a book on human physiology. We begin with the broadest level. Since physiology is an applied life science, it belongs to Technology, which is class 600. Within technology, medicine and health is the division 610. Moving deeper, human physiology is the section 612. To narrow further, the nervous system is 612.8, and the brain specifically is 612.82. Each step adds one digit and tightens the subject.

Classifying a topic in physics

For a book on classical mechanics, we start with science, which is class 500. Physics is the division 530, and within it, classical mechanics is the section 531, while fluid mechanics is 532. The same logic applies to every subject in the schedules.

Classification by discipline, not subject

One concept often trips up beginners: the same topic can appear in several different classes depending on the discipline that treats it. The classic example is clothing. The psychological influence of clothing belongs to 155.95 within psychology, customs associated with clothing fall under 391 within customs, and clothing as fashion design sits at 746.92 within the arts. The subject is identical, but the classification differs because the discipline differs. This is the single most important principle behind the DDC schedules.

A note on Indian subjects

The schedules also accommodate subjects of local interest. For instance, Indian history is classed at 954, with finer periods such as the Mughal era expressed through further decimal subdivisions. Remembering a handful of frequently used numbers, such as 954 for Indian history or 327 for international relations, can make a classifier noticeably faster at the desk.

Why schedules matter for a working library

The schedules do more than assign numbers. They ensure that every book on the same subject ends up at the same shelf location, regardless of who classifies it or when. This consistency is what allows a reader to browse a shelf and find related material gathered together. Because the hierarchy is structural, any note that applies to a broad class also holds true for all the narrower topics beneath it. This built-in logic keeps the entire system coherent even as new subjects are added over time.

For a student of document processing, learning to read the schedules is a practical skill. It is not about memorising a thousand numbers, but about understanding the pattern: start broad, identify the discipline, and then narrow down section by section until the subject is precisely placed.
