When you walk into any library and see books grouped by subject, you are looking at the result of a classification system at work. For most libraries in India and across the world, that system is the Dewey Decimal Classification. At its broadest level, the DDC divides all of human knowledge into ten main classes. But ten broad categories are far too wide to be useful on their own. This is where the Second Summary steps in. It takes each of those ten main classes and splits them into ten finer parts, producing exactly 100 divisions. Understanding this middle layer is one of the first practical skills every classifier must build.

What the Second Summary actually is
The DDC presents its structure through three summaries. The first summary lists the ten main classes, the second summary lists the hundred divisions, and the third summary lists the thousand sections. Each summary adds one more digit of detail and one more layer of specificity.
In a three-digit Dewey number, every digit has a job. The first digit shows the main class. The second digit shows the division. The third digit shows the section. So in the number 530, the 5 places the book in Science, the 3 narrows it to Physics, and a later digit would narrow it further. The Second Summary is concerned with that second digit. It answers the question: once you know the broad class, what is the next level of subject detail?
Because each of the ten classes is split into ten divisions, the arithmetic is simple. Ten classes multiplied by ten divisions gives 100 divisions in total. This is why the Second Summary is also called the Hundred Divisions.
Breaking down the ten classes into divisions
The logic is consistent across every class. The main class number always ends in 00, such as 500 for Science. The divisions then run in steps of ten: 510, 520, 530, and so on up to 590. The first division, ending in the same digits as the parent class, usually holds general works on that whole class.
Take the Science class as an example. The number 500 covers general works on the sciences, 510 covers Mathematics, 520 covers Astronomy, 530 covers Physics, and 540 covers Chemistry. Each step of ten moves you to a related but distinct branch of science. This pattern of ten-fold division is what gives Dewey its name and its decimal character. As OCLC, the body that maintains the DDC, explains, the convention is that no number should have fewer than three digits, which is why even a broad division like Physics is written as 530 rather than just 53.

Notable divisions worth knowing well
Some divisions appear far more often in everyday classification work than others, and a few deserve special attention because they are easy to confuse or because they hold large collections in academic libraries.
Philosophy and psychology in the 100s
A common point of confusion is that Class 100 covers philosophy, parapsychology and occultism, and psychology together. Many students expect psychology to sit in the sciences, but in Dewey it lives at 150, within the philosophy class. The first divisions follow the classical branches of philosophy: 110 Metaphysics, 120 Epistemology, 160 Logic, and 170 Ethics. The closing divisions, 180 and 190, arrange philosophy by historical period and region. For Indian libraries with strong holdings in Indian philosophy, much of that material falls under 180, the division for ancient and eastern philosophy.
Political science and law in the 300s
The Social Sciences class is one of the busiest in any general or academic collection. The divisions move in a logical chain: 320 Political science, 330 Economics, 340 Law, and 350 Public administration. These four sit next to each other because they all deal with how societies are governed and regulated. A book on the Indian Constitution, elections, or systems of government would begin its life in 320, while statutes and legal commentary belong in 340. Education, a heavily used division in a country with a vast academic publishing output, sits at 370.
Chemistry and the sciences in the 500s
Within the Science class, Chemistry occupies 540, sitting between Physics at 530 and the Earth sciences at 550. The ordering here reflects an intellectual logic. Mathematics comes first at 510 because it is the foundational language of all the sciences, followed by astronomy and physics, then chemistry, then the earth and life sciences. A classifier handling a chemistry textbook knows immediately that the number begins with 54 before they ever open the schedules.
Why classifiers benefit from memorizing the divisions
Memorizing 100 divisions sounds demanding, but the payoff is large and the structure makes it easier than it first appears. Because the divisions follow a fixed pattern of tens within each class, you are really learning ten short lists of ten rather than one long list of a hundred.
The most immediate benefit is speed. A classifier who has the divisions committed to memory can assign a preliminary number without reaching for the schedules every time. When a book on agriculture arrives, the mind jumps straight to 630 and only then consults the schedule to refine it. In a busy library receiving a steady flow of new titles, this saves a great deal of time across a working day.
The second benefit is service at the reference desk. A librarian who knows the divisions can point a reader toward the right shelf the moment they describe what they want, even before checking the catalogue. Someone asking for material on insurance can be guided toward the 360s, and someone asking about photography toward 770, on the spot.
A third benefit is collection management. Knowing the division structure helps staff see at a glance where a collection is strong and where it has gaps, since the shelves themselves map onto the numbered divisions. This makes stock evaluation and acquisition planning far more intuitive.
For students preparing for library science examinations and recruitment tests, the Second Summary is also frequently tested directly. Questions often ask which summary a given number belongs to, and the rule is straightforward: a one-digit class number points to the first summary, a two-digit division points to the second summary, and a three-digit section points to the third summary.
The systematic arrangement behind the divisions
The divisions are not placed randomly. Several consistent principles govern their order, and recognising these principles makes memorization much easier because the sequence starts to feel predictable.
General to specific
Within each class, the arrangement moves from general topics toward more specific ones. The division that shares its digits with the parent class holds the general works, and later divisions narrow the focus. In the Religion class, the sequence begins with general religious concepts before moving to specific traditions and finally to other and comparative religions at 290.
Related subjects kept together
Subjects that belong intellectually together are placed next to each other. In the Social sciences, political science, economics, and law form a continuous block because they all concern the governance and regulation of society. This grouping means that a researcher browsing one division will find closely related material on the neighbouring shelves.
Theory before application
Across several classes, theoretical foundations come before applied fields. Mathematics at 510 precedes the natural sciences because it underpins them. In the same spirit, the broad applied field of Technology in the 600s arranges its divisions so that medicine, engineering, and agriculture each occupy their own clearly bounded band of numbers.
Historical and geographical progression
In the Literature and History classes, the arrangement often follows language, region, or chronology rather than topic. Within History the principal subseries are divided by region, which is why European history is gathered in the 940s and Asian history, including Indian history, falls in the 950s. Literature is arranged primarily by the language in which a work is written, so the divisions of the 800s line up with major language families.
One important idea ties all of this together. The DDC is arranged by discipline rather than by subject, meaning a single topic can appear in different places depending on how it is treated. Clothing, for instance, is classed differently when approached through psychology, through customs, or through fashion design. The divisions reflect disciplines of study, not isolated keywords, and keeping this in mind prevents many classification errors.
