When you open the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), the schedules and tables can look like an impenetrable wall of numbers arranged by discipline. Finding the right class number for a subject often demands that you already know where that subject sits in the larger map of knowledge. The Relative Index exists precisely to solve this problem. It is the alphabetical key that unlocks the schedules, and understanding its scope-what it covers, what it deliberately leaves out, and how many entries it holds-is essential for anyone learning document classification. This post examines the scope of the Relative Index in detail so you can use it with confidence.

What the Relative Index actually contains

The Relative Index is an alphabetical list of subjects, with the disciplines in which each subject is treated arranged alphabetically beneath it. Its name comes from this very feature: it relates subjects to disciplines. In the schedules, a single subject is scattered across many disciplines; in the index, all those scattered aspects are pulled together in one place. The official OCLC introduction explains that the index includes most terms found in the schedules and tables, along with synonyms and terms that have literary warrant for the concepts those schedules and tables represent.

Key terms, headings, and notes

The bulk of the index is drawn directly from the language of the DDC itself. Every caption (the verbal heading attached to a class number), along with the terms used in scope notes, including notes, and class-here notes, becomes a potential index entry. So if a term appears in the schedules describing what a number means, you can usually expect to find it in the index too. The index also gathers terms for the broad concepts discussed in the DDC Manual, which guides classifiers through difficult areas. This means the index is not a thin afterthought at the back of the book; it is a substantial reference tool in its own right.

Compound concepts and inverted entries

The index goes beyond single words. It captures compound terms that combine two or more concepts, and it brings together the many disciplinary facets of one subject under a single heading. Consider how “Hospitals” appears: the index lists hospitals in architecture (725.51), in law (344.03211), in management (362.11068), in landscape architecture (712.7), and in many other disciplines, each with its own number. A user thinking about hospitals from any one of these angles can locate the correct number without first guessing which of the ten main classes applies. Plants and animals are indexed under both their scientific and their common names, so a search for “boars” can lead you to the scientific grouping where the DDC actually places them. This dual treatment, documented in the OCLC Dewey glossary, is what gives the index its power as an entry point.

References that guide you onward

The index is also rich in cross-references. See-also references connect synonyms and broader or related terms, while see-Manual references point to relevant discussions in the DDC Manual. Numbers drawn from the six auxiliary tables are flagged with prefixes T1 through T6 so you immediately know they cannot stand alone and must be attached to a base number. These signposts turn the index from a simple lookup list into a navigational aid.

What the Relative Index deliberately leaves out

The scope of the index is defined as much by its exclusions as by its contents. The DDC is built on the principle that knowledge is organised by discipline, not by individual entities, and the index reflects this. As a rule, the index does not attempt to list every individual person, every town or village, or every named institution and organisation. A user looking for such specifics is expected to search under the broader subject category instead.

Personal names are tightly restricted

Individual persons are almost never indexed by name. The official rules permit only three narrow categories of personal names: heads of state used to identify a historical period (for example, Louis XIV), founders or revealers of religions, and the initiators of schools of thought when the name is used to label that school. Beyond these, you will not find biographical names in the index. A biography of an individual is classed with the subject the person is associated with, or in the biography provisions, rather than retrieved by personal name.

Places and organisations follow the same logic

Geographic names are included only selectively. The index carries names of countries, states and provinces of most countries, counties of the United States, capital cities and a few other important municipalities, and certain significant geographic features. The countless smaller towns, villages, and localities are not listed individually; instead they are reached through the area notation in Table 2. The same restraint applies to named organisations and institutions, which the system handles through their broader subject or discipline rather than through individual index entries. The index also generally avoids phrases that begin with the adjectival form of a country, language, nationality, or religion-“French cooking” or “Hindu prayer books,” for example-and phrases built around general concepts like education, statistics, or management. These omissions are intentional, because such combinations can be constructed through number building when required. The German National Library’s overview of the system describes how this discipline-based structure links every subject to its field of study, which explains why the index does not duplicate every possible specific name.

The index is not exhaustive

A crucial point for new classifiers: the Relative Index is not meant to be exhaustive. If you cannot find a term, the guidance is to try a broader term or go directly to the schedules and tables. The schedules remain the authority, and the introduction is explicit that the schedules and tables must always be consulted before any number found in the index is applied. The index suggests where to look; it does not make the final decision for you.

The volume of entries: why the index is so large

The sheer size of the Relative Index surprises many students. The index holds about 80,000 entries, which is dramatically more than the schedules and tables themselves contain. Indian course material from IGNOU notes that the index offers an alternative approach with roughly 80,000 entries against the far smaller count in the schedules, which is commonly cited as around 29,528 entries.

Why does an index dwarf the very thing it indexes? Because each subject in the schedules sits in exactly one place, but the same subject may be approached from many disciplines. The index records each of those disciplinary approaches as a separate entry. A single concept scattered across half a dozen disciplines generates half a dozen index entries, plus entries for its synonyms, common names, and compound forms. The schedules compress knowledge by discipline; the index expands access by subject. This inversion is exactly what makes the index so useful, and it is why scholars such as M. P. Satija describe the Relative Index in the Cambridge handbook on the DDC as Melvil Dewey’s most enduring contribution to classification.

Why the scope matters in everyday classification

The practical value of the Relative Index lies in this: you can locate a subject even when you have no idea where it belongs in the universe of knowledge. You start with the word that comes naturally to mind, look it up alphabetically, and the index suggests one or more class numbers along with the disciplines they represent.

A bridge, not a shortcut

It helps to treat the index as a bridge between how people think about subjects and how the DDC organises them. The number the index gives you is a starting point that must be verified. In the digital environment, this same relationship persists: each record in WebDewey carries its associated Relative Index terms alongside the class number and notes, so the index continues to function as an access layer even when the print volumes are not in hand. The first number shown in an index entry is the interdisciplinary number, but a promising entry still has to be checked against the schedules, because only there will you find the full picture of what a number covers and how it is built.

Knowing the limits keeps you accurate

Understanding the scope also prevents wasted effort. Once you know the index will not list an individual author, a small town, or a named company, you stop searching for them and move straight to the broader subject or the appropriate auxiliary table. Knowing what the index excludes is as practical as knowing what it includes, because it tells you when to stop searching alphabetically and switch to number building instead.
