If you have ever browsed a library shelf and wondered how a librarian knew exactly where to place a book on public finance versus one on international trade, the answer lies in a layered system of numbers. The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is the most widely used library classification scheme in the world, organising collections in more than 140 countries. While the broad outlines of DDC are familiar to most students, the real precision of the system emerges at its third level: the 1,000 sections. This is where a subject stops being vague and becomes pinpoint-specific. Understanding the third summary is essential for anyone studying document processing, because it is the layer where genuine classification work begins.

The DDC presents its overall structure through three summaries, each one more detailed than the last. The first summary contains the ten main classes, the second summary contains the hundred divisions, and the third summary contains the thousand sections. Each level is built by dividing the previous one by ten. Ten main classes become one hundred divisions, and one hundred divisions become one thousand sections.
This is a strictly decimal arrangement. The notation uses Arabic numerals throughout, which makes it instantly recognisable regardless of the reader’s language. Every section in the third summary is represented by a three-digit number, and the DDC follows the convention that no class number should have fewer than three digits. So even the very first section is written as 001, not 1.
The logic of the three digits is easy to read once you know the pattern. The first digit signals the main class, the second digit signals the division, and the third digit signals the section. Reading a number left to right takes you from the most general idea to the most specific.
From 100 to 1000: how divisions become sections
To see how the third level is built, it helps to trace the path downward. Each of the ten main classes is divided into ten divisions, producing the hundred divisions of the second summary. Then each of those divisions is split again into ten sections, which gives us the thousand sections of the third summary.
The official documentation illustrates this with the sciences. The number 530 is used for general works on physics, 531 for classical mechanics, 532 for fluid mechanics, and 533 for gas mechanics. Notice the structure here. The 5 places the topic in pure sciences. The 3 narrows it to physics. The final digit then identifies the specific branch of physics. The same numbers, read in sequence, walk you from a discipline down to a sub-field.
It is worth noting that not every possible number has been assigned. Not all of the numbers available for the divisions and sections have actually been used, so some slots remain empty. This leaves room for the system to grow as new fields of knowledge appear.
A worked example: economics and its sections
Economics offers a clear illustration of how the third summary works in practice. Economics falls under the social sciences, which occupy the 300 main class. Within that class, economics is the division numbered 330. When this division is broken into its ten sections, each section captures a distinct branch of economic study.

Public finance at 336
The section numbered 336 covers public finance, meaning the study of government revenue and expenditure, taxation, public debt, and budgets. For a student in this country, this is the section that would house books on the Union Budget, the structure of the Goods and Services Tax, or the working of the Finance Commission. The point is that all of these distinct topics share the same parent: they are aspects of how a government manages its money, so they sit together under 336.
International economics at 337
The section numbered 337 covers international economics. This includes trade between nations, balance of payments, tariffs, foreign exchange, and the work of bodies such as the World Trade Organization. A book examining export policy or cross-border trade agreements would be classified here. Public finance and international economics are neighbours in the numbering, but they are clearly separate subjects, and the third digit is what keeps them apart.
Hierarchy in action
The economics example reveals something fundamental about how the DDC thinks. The system organises knowledge first by discipline and then by subject, in a hierarchical structure where topics progress from the general to the specific. Each added digit narrows the focus.
This hierarchy is not just an idea; it is built into the numbers themselves. Notational hierarchy is expressed by the length of the notation. A number is usually subordinate to a class whose notation is one digit shorter, coordinate with a class that has the same number of significant digits, and superordinate to a class with numbers one or more digits longer. In plain terms, a longer number is always more specific and sits inside the shorter number that precedes it.
There is also a logical relationship between a whole and its parts. Structural hierarchy means that every topic is part of all the broader topics above it, and whatever is true of the whole is also true of the parts. So anything that applies to economics as a whole (330) also applies to public finance (336), because 336 lives inside 330. This is why a classifier can rely on notes attached to a broader number; those notes carry down to everything beneath them.
Going beyond the three digits
The thousand sections are powerful, but they are not the end of the road. When even more precision is needed, the DDC adds a decimal point after the third digit and continues dividing by ten. A decimal point follows the third digit in a class number, after which division by ten continues to whatever degree of specificity is required.
The genius of this is that the decimal is treated as a fraction, not a whole number. The notation 516.375 is read as 516 plus 0.375, never as 516375, which means an unlimited number of subdivisions can be inserted between any two existing numbers. New subjects can be slotted in without disturbing the existing arrangement. The third summary, then, is the foundation on which this deeper specificity is built.
Why sections matter for classification
It is fair to ask why the third level deserves this much attention. The answer is that the section is usually the smallest unit a classifier works with before turning to decimal extension. The ten main classes are far too broad to be useful for shelving an individual book, and even the hundred divisions group subjects too loosely. The thousand sections are where a topic finally becomes narrow enough to be placed with confidence.
Consider what happens without this level. If a library could only classify down to the division, every book on economics, from labour markets to government budgets to global trade, would carry the same number, 330. They would all sit together in one undifferentiated block, and a student looking specifically for public finance would have to sift through everything. The third summary solves this by giving each branch its own home, so that 336 and 337 stand apart on the shelf.
This precision serves a practical purpose. It supports what Dewey called relative location, the principle that materials are arranged by subject relationship rather than by a fixed physical spot. The numerical notation acts as a shorthand identification and location tool, and its patterned, repeating structure makes it easier to remember. A student who learns that 330 means economics can reasonably guess that anything in the 330s is economic in nature, even before reading the title.
Limits worth knowing
The third summary is effective, but it is not flawless. Because the DDC was first designed in the nineteenth century, some sections can feel artificially located by modern standards, and entirely new fields sometimes have to be fitted into a structure that did not anticipate them. The system addresses this through regular updates and the decimal expansion described earlier, but a good classifier always applies the schedules with judgement rather than treating them as rigid rules. Recognising both the strength and the limitations of the third summary is part of becoming a capable cataloguer.
Bringing it together
