Every catalogue you search, every classification scheme on a library shelf, and every digital repository you access today carries the fingerprints of decisions made decades or even centuries ago. To understand why libraries work the way they do, and where they are headed, you have to look backward. This is the work of historical research: a systematic method of investigating, interpreting, and analysing past events and their contexts using primary and secondary sources. While many people associate it only with history as a school subject, its scope extends far wider, touching the social sciences, science, technology, and very much the field of Library and Information Science (LIS).

What historical research actually does

Historical research is the process of systematically investigating, interpreting, and analysing past events and their contexts. It involves examining primary sources, such as original documents, records, and artefacts, alongside secondary sources to reconstruct and critically evaluate how things developed over time. The goal is not to simply list dates and names. It is to understand the causes, effects, and meaning behind events.

The method depends on critical examination, evidence, and context, which is what separates genuine historical inquiry from memory, rumour, or myth. A researcher does not just collect old papers. They verify the authenticity of sources, weigh competing accounts, and place each piece of evidence in its proper setting before drawing conclusions. This careful, evidence-driven approach is exactly why the method has spread so widely beyond the discipline of history itself.

Why the past explains the present

Societies are not frozen in time. They shift and respond to political, economic, and cultural forces that unfold across generations. The sociologist C. Wright Mills argued that every social science requires a historical scope of conception and a full use of historical materials. Without a historical dimension, any analysis risks treating present conditions as if they appeared from nowhere, missing the deeper causes embedded in time. This single idea, that the present is shaped by what came before, is the thread that runs through every application of historical research discussed below.

Applications in Library and Information Science

For LIS students and professionals, historical research is far more than an academic exercise. It is the key to understanding why libraries and library systems look the way they do today. The history of LIS examines the evolution of libraries, the organisation of information, and the practices of knowledge dissemination from ancient times to the present.

Consider how libraries themselves transformed. When most people picture a library, they imagine a public library open to everyone. Yet the public library is a relatively recent development in the history of library science. The earliest libraries served only the wealthy and the clergy, and many operated as subscription libraries where access depended on payment or membership. Historical research reveals this slow democratisation of information, helping us appreciate that open access to knowledge was won gradually rather than given freely.

Tracing the discipline’s intellectual roots

Historical research also explains how LIS became a recognised academic discipline. The field traces its modern origins to nineteenth-century Germany and to the United States, where Melvil Dewey founded the first academic library science program, the School of Library Economy, at Columbia University in 1887. A major turning point came in the 1920s with the establishment of the Graduate Library School at the University of Chicago, which redefined library science as the scientific study of the interaction between books and people. This shift moved the field away from mere “library economy” toward a research-driven profession with its own theory and values.

Understanding this trajectory matters. When you study cataloguing rules or information retrieval models, you are working with concepts that emerged from specific historical struggles to professionalise the field. Historical research connects those dots.

The Indian story of library development

In India, the history of libraries is closely tied to the nation’s social and political journey. Organised collections of manuscripts existed in the subcontinent as early as the 5th century BCE, serving religious and scholarly purposes. The modern library movement, however, developed slowly under colonial rule. The state of Baroda became a pioneer, opening a library department around 1910 and even running the first mobile library in the country.

No discussion of Indian LIS history is complete without Dr. S. R. Ranganathan. When he returned to Madras, Indian libraries were largely closed-stack systems where users had limited direct access to books and cataloguing was disorganised. Ranganathan introduced open-access shelving and systematic cataloguing, changes considered radical at the time. He gave the field his Five Laws of Library Science in 1931 and the faceted Colon Classification in 1933. He also drafted model library legislation that influenced the Madras Public Libraries Act of 1948, the first such law in India. Historical research lets us trace how these ideas spread and why nineteen states had passed Library Acts by 2017.

The wider scope across other fields

The reach of historical research extends well beyond libraries. It is foundational in fields such as history, anthropology, sociology, and education, where it provides insight into how past trends and decisions shape the present and future.

Social sciences

In sociology, the historical method became widely used by the mid-twentieth century as part of qualitative research. Anthony Giddens went so far as to argue that there was no logical or methodological reason to separate the historical method from quantitative approaches. Researchers study historical trends in social structures and cultural practices to understand how they evolved. A closely related approach, historical-comparative research, applies surveys, interviews, and existing datasets across several time periods or places, often raising fewer ethical concerns because the data was collected in the past or is already public.

Education

Educational research increasingly relies on historical methods, though scholars note there is still a need to clarify their distinctive features. The field works through four key aspects: sources, contextualisation, periodisation, and analysis. By studying how schooling, curricula, and educational institutions developed, researchers can better judge which reforms work and why certain practices persist.

Science and technology

The history of science and technology is a thriving field of its own, examining how human understanding of the natural world and the ability to manipulate it changed over time. It also studies the cultural, economic, and political context and impact of scientific practices. This is not merely about celebrating inventions. The relationship between science and technology runs in both directions. Technology created new tools and machines with which scientists could achieve ever-increasing insight into the natural world, which in turn fed back into new technologies such as synthetic dyes, plastics, and the electric lightbulb. Funders today recognise this value: the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation states that historical scholarship is critically valuable to understanding the contemporary context of scientific research and to thinking about the future of the research enterprise.

Notice the common pattern. Whether in sociology, education, or science, historical research supplies the long view that other methods often lack. It explains origins, traces patterns, and exposes the forces that produced the situation a researcher observes today.

Perhaps the most practical reason to value historical research is its direct bearing on present-day problems. By analysing events, trends, and narratives, researchers can draw insights that illuminate current issues and inform future decision-making. For LIS, this connection is especially clear.

Take Ranganathan’s Five Laws again. These seemingly simple principles, that books are for use and that every reader should find their book, represented a paradigm shift from libraries as book warehouses to dynamic service institutions centred on user needs. They remain remarkably relevant, with many modern digital libraries and information systems unconsciously embodying these fundamental concepts. A professional who knows this history can design better digital services because they understand the philosophy behind them.

Historical research also frames today’s biggest debates in the field. The study of how globalisation affects LIS highlights real tensions: the risk of cultural homogenisation, the dependence of libraries on political stability and economic growth, and the need to preserve regional cultural heritage amidst global forces. These are not abstract worries. They shape decisions about which collections to digitise, which languages to support, and how to balance local autonomy with global integration.

Preservation and the archival role

There is also a hands-on dimension. Historians and information professionals work to preserve and interpret archival materials, ensuring valuable records survive for future research. This archival responsibility sits at the heart of LIS practice. Every digitisation project, every decision about long-term storage formats, and every effort to rescue fragile manuscripts is informed by an understanding of why preservation matters, a lesson historical research teaches repeatedly.

Honest about the limits

Historical research is powerful, but it is not without challenges. Incomplete records and potential biases in surviving sources can distort the picture, which is why the depth and richness of careful historical analysis make it an invaluable but demanding tool. A good researcher acknowledges gaps in the evidence rather than papering over them. This honesty is part of what gives the method its credibility across so many fields.
