Every library, every archive, and every information system we use today has a history. But understanding that history is not as simple as listing dates in order. It requires a disciplined, scholarly process of digging through evidence, questioning its reliability, and piecing together a coherent picture of what actually happened. This process is called historical research, and it is one of the most fascinating yet demanding methods of inquiry in the academic world. Let us explore what historical research really means, how it differs from simply recording events, and why it matters far beyond the discipline of history itself.

What is historical research?

Historical research is the systematic process of investigating, analyzing, and interpreting past events using a wide variety of sources. Its central goal is to reconstruct and critically evaluate past developments in order to understand their causes, effects, and meaning. Unlike disciplines that study current or future phenomena, historical research focuses entirely on events that have already occurred.

The word “reconstruct” is key here, but it can be misleading. Historians cannot travel back in time to witness events firsthand. Instead, they gather evidence from documents, artifacts, oral testimonies, and records, and then use that evidence to build a version of the past. This is why historical research is often described as a craft rather than a simple act of fact-collection. Scholars must work carefully with fragments of information, because we do not possess complete records of every event in history.

Some respected historians have described the field in memorable ways. The historian E. H. Carr, in his classic work What is History?, argued that history is a continuous dialogue between the present and the past. Another influential thinker, Marc Bloch, wrote The Historian’s Craft to explain how historians actually work with their evidence. These foundational ideas remind us that historical research is an active intellectual effort, not a passive recording exercise.

Historical research is generally considered a qualitative research method, since it relies on the interpretation of textual and material evidence rather than numerical data and statistical testing. However, many parts of the process are rigorous and systematic in a way that resembles scientific inquiry.

Historical research versus mere chronology

A common misunderstanding is to treat historical research as the same thing as chronology. Chronology is simply the arrangement of events in the order they happened. It tells us when something occurred. While chronology is a useful starting point and provides the skeleton of any historical account, it is not the same as historical research.

Historical research goes much further. It does not stop at recording that an event happened on a particular date. It asks deeper questions: Why did the event happen? What were its causes? Who was involved, and what were their motives? What were the consequences, both immediate and long-term? How does this event connect to broader social, political, and economic trends?

The role of interpretation

The element that truly separates historical research from chronology is interpretation. Once historians have gathered their evidence, they must make sense of it and draw conclusions about what occurred and why. This process of constructing meaning from evidence is called historical interpretation. As scholars explain, raw evidence on its own is merely a collection of facts. What gives the study of history its real value is the way historians analyze that evidence and explain its significance.

This is also why two historians can examine the same set of documents and arrive at somewhat different conclusions. They may weigh evidence differently, ask different questions, or place events in different contexts. The study of these varying interpretations is known as historiography, which is essentially the history of how history has been written and understood. Far from being a weakness, this interpretive richness is part of what makes the discipline intellectually alive.

How historians work with evidence

To understand historical research properly, it helps to look at the kinds of sources historians use and how they evaluate them. Sources are broadly divided into two categories.

Primary and secondary sources

Primary sources are materials directly connected to the event or period being studied. These include eyewitness accounts, government records, letters, diaries, official minutes of meetings, photographs, and physical artifacts. Because they originate from the time under investigation, primary sources are highly valued for their immediacy and authenticity.

Secondary sources are interpretations, analyses, or summaries created later by scholars who did not witness the events. Textbooks, biographies, encyclopaedias, and research articles fall into this category. A reliable secondary source should always be grounded in valid primary source evidence. An interpretation that is not supported by primary sources is little more than speculation. One caution worth noting is that secondary sources can carry errors that multiply as information passes from one writer to another, which is why historians prefer to verify claims against primary material wherever possible.

Source criticism: external and internal

Not every source is trustworthy, so historians apply a careful evaluation process known as source criticism. This is one of the most important duties of a historian, and it operates at two levels.

External criticism aims to establish the authenticity of a source. It asks whether the document is genuine and what its true origin is. This involves examining physical features such as paper, ink, handwriting, and dating, as well as determining who actually authored it and when. The goal is to confirm that a source is what it claims to be, and to detect forgeries, copying errors, or later alterations.

Internal criticism, on the other hand, evaluates the credibility and reliability of a source’s content. Even a genuine document can contain bias, exaggeration, or outright falsehood. Internal criticism requires the historian to approach a source with healthy doubt, analyzing its content carefully to determine the trustworthiness of the information it contains. The historian asks who created the source, what their perspective was, and whether the content is consistent with other reliable evidence.

To strengthen their conclusions, historians also use corroboration, cross-checking details across multiple independent sources. When several unrelated sources agree on a point, confidence in that detail increases. This careful sifting of evidence is what allows historians to distinguish factual accounts from misinformation.

Application in library and information science and beyond

Although historical research is most associated with the discipline of history, its methods are widely applied across many fields, including Library and Information Science (LIS).

Historical research in LIS

In the context of LIS, historical research helps scholars understand how libraries, archives, and information systems have evolved over time. This is essential for tracing the development of information storage, retrieval, and dissemination practices, which have transformed dramatically from ancient institutions like the Library of Alexandria to today’s digital repositories. By studying this evolution, LIS professionals gain insight into how libraries and information centres have adapted to changing societal needs, new technologies, and shifting cultural attitudes toward knowledge.

There is also a deep, practical connection between LIS and historical research. Libraries and archives are the very institutions that collect, organize, and preserve the documents and records on which historians depend. Many LIS graduate programmes therefore include dedicated training in archival and manuscript services, covering the principles, conceptual foundations, and key practices of managing historical materials. Without skilled archivists and librarians safeguarding records for their evidentiary value, historical research would be far more difficult to conduct.

This relationship is becoming even richer with new approaches like computational archival science, a transdisciplinary field that applies computational methods to large-scale records and archives. It helps train the next generation of archivists and historians to handle massive digital collections, blending historical inquiry with information technology.

Other disciplines that rely on historical research

Historical research extends well beyond history and LIS. Anthropology, sociology, political science, and cultural studies all draw on historical methods to understand patterns and changes over time. Institutions and organizations also use historical research to gain insights that inform their current cultural, political, and social strategies, treating the past as a guide for future decisions.

Audio and video archives have opened new possibilities here as well. A researcher studying the freedom movement, for instance, can analyze recorded speeches to understand the philosophy and rhetoric of leaders of the period. Recordings of folk stories, traditional songs, and indigenous knowledge also help preserve oral traditions that would otherwise be lost, which is particularly valuable in communities where knowledge has long been passed down by word of mouth.

Limitations and challenges of historical research

For all its value, historical research faces serious challenges that every researcher must acknowledge.

Incomplete and selective evidence

One of the biggest difficulties is the selective nature of available evidence. We simply do not have complete records of the past. Some sources have been lost, destroyed, or never created in the first place. Others survive only in fragments. This means historians are often piecing together a partial picture, and important voices, especially of ordinary people, marginalized groups, and oral cultures, may be missing entirely from the written record.

Subjectivity and bias

A second major challenge is subjectivity. The sources themselves may carry the biases, agendas, and limited perspectives of the people who created them. On top of this, historians bring their own assumptions and viewpoints to the interpretation process. Complete objectivity is therefore difficult to achieve. A related danger is anachronism, the mistake of judging past actors by present-day values and standards rather than understanding them within their own context.

Time and difficulty in generalizing

Historical research is also extremely time-intensive. Locating, accessing, and verifying sources, often scattered across different archives and languages, can take years. Furthermore, because historical events are deeply tied to their specific contexts, it is difficult to generalize findings in the way that experimental sciences can. Each event carries its own unique circumstances, which limits the formation of universal laws.

Despite these limitations, the depth and richness that historical analysis provides make it an invaluable tool. By critically examining sources, understanding context and causality, and honestly recognizing the challenges involved, researchers can construct a nuanced and meaningful narrative of the past that helps illuminate present-day issues.
