When researchers want to understand how people responded to a particular experience, a general conversation rarely does the job. They need a method that keeps the discussion anchored to one situation while still allowing the respondent to speak freely. The focused interview was designed for exactly this purpose. It sits between the rigid structured interview and the open-ended non-directive interview, giving researchers a powerful way to draw out detailed reactions to a specific event, programme, or piece of content. For students of research methodology, understanding this technique is essential because it appears across disciplines, from media studies to library and information science.

What is a focused interview?

A focused interview is a qualitative data collection method in which the interviewer concentrates the conversation on a respondent’s reactions to a particular situation that the respondent has already experienced. The defining feature is that all participants have been exposed to the same concrete situation, whether that is a film, an advertisement, a library service, a training programme, or a news broadcast. The interviewer has studied this situation beforehand and uses that knowledge to guide the discussion toward the aspects that matter most for the research.

The method was developed in the 1940s by sociologist Robert K. Merton along with Marjorie Fiske and Patricia Kendall at Columbia University’s Bureau of Applied Social Research. Their original work studied how audiences reacted to wartime radio broadcasts and propaganda films. The technique was later set out in detail in their 1956 manual, The Focused Interview, which became a seminal text in qualitative research. Interestingly, this same method eventually gave rise to the modern focus group, which travelled into marketing research before returning to sociology decades later.

What makes a focused interview unique?

The key thing that sets a focused interview apart is its careful balance between structure and freedom. Unlike a structured interview, where every question is fixed in advance, the focused interview does not bind the respondent to rigid wording. Yet unlike a completely open conversation, it does not let the discussion wander wherever it likes. The interviewer holds the general direction steady while giving the respondent room to express reactions in their own words.

Merton and his colleagues identified four conditions that distinguish this method. First, the people being interviewed are known to have been involved in a specific situation. Second, the researcher has already analysed that situation and formed a provisional idea of which elements are important. Third, based on this analysis, the researcher develops an interview guide that outlines the major areas to be covered. Fourth, the interview itself focuses on the subjective experiences of the people who lived through the situation, comparing their actual reactions with what the researcher anticipated.

Research methodology textbooks often place the focused interview alongside the non-directive and clinical interviews, all of which fall under the broader category of unstructured interviews. The differences are worth noting because students frequently confuse them.

In a non-directive interview, the interviewer exercises very little control and behaves almost like a catalyst, simply prompting the respondent to keep talking. The respondent leads, and the questioning is minimal. The focused interview is characterised by noticeably more interviewer control than this. The researcher steers the conversation back to the predetermined topics whenever it drifts, and may even reintroduce the original stimulus to draw out more concrete responses. The clinical interview, by contrast, digs into a person’s feelings, motivations, and life history rather than their reaction to one specific event.

The essential distinction: a focused interview is tied to a shared, known experience and a pre-analysed situation, while other unstructured interviews are not necessarily anchored in this way.

The three criteria of a good focused interview

Merton, Fiske and Kendall set out specific quality standards that a focused interview should meet. These criteria remain the benchmark for judging whether the method has been applied well.

Specificity

Specificity means drawing out detailed responses about the particular elements of the situation that produced a reaction. A vague answer like “I liked the programme” has little research value. The interviewer needs to discover exactly which parts of the programme produced which feelings. Good questioning pushes the respondent to connect their reactions to concrete details of what they saw, heard, or experienced.

Range

Range refers to covering the full spread of relevant reactions rather than only the most obvious ones. A respondent might focus on one striking moment and overlook other significant aspects. A skilled interviewer ensures the conversation touches on the complete set of themes the researcher identified during the earlier analysis, while still remaining open to unanticipated responses the respondent brings up.

Depth

Depth means going beyond surface-level statements to capture the emotional, cognitive, and value-laden meaning behind a reaction. Instead of accepting a quick judgement, the interviewer probes into why the respondent felt as they did and what associations the situation triggered. This is where the richest data usually emerges.

Focused interviews and hypothesis development

One of the most valued uses of this method, highlighted in C. R. Kothari’s widely used textbook on research methodology, is its role in developing hypotheses. In much research, the formulation of a clear working hypothesis plays an important role because it delimits the area of study and keeps the researcher on track. The challenge is that good hypotheses do not appear out of thin air. They arise from prior thinking about a subject, examination of available material, and the insights gathered from people who have experienced the phenomenon directly.

This is precisely where focused interviews are helpful. By gathering rich, detailed accounts of how real people reacted to a situation, the researcher uncovers patterns and unexpected reactions that can be shaped into testable propositions. A focused interview might reveal, for example, that users of a particular service responded negatively not to the service itself but to one specific feature. That observation can become a hypothesis for a later, larger study. In this sense the method works as an exploratory tool that feeds into more structured investigation down the line.

Conducting a focused interview

The process begins long before the interviewer meets the respondent. The researcher first studies the situation that participants have experienced and forms a provisional analysis of its significant elements. From this analysis, the researcher prepares an interview guide listing the major areas to explore. This guide is not a fixed questionnaire but a flexible map.

During the interview, the researcher introduces the topic and then encourages the respondent to describe their reactions freely. The interviewer listens for openings to probe deeper, gently steering the conversation back to the relevant themes when needed and pressing for specificity, range, and depth throughout. The interviewer may also use explicit verbal cues that point back to the original stimulus, which helps the respondent give more concrete answers rather than abstract generalisations.

The role of the interviewer

Success depends heavily on the interviewer’s skill. A poorly conducted focused interview can easily slip into either rigidity, where the respondent feels interrogated, or aimlessness, where the conversation produces little usable data. The interviewer must build rapport, remain neutral so as not to influence answers, recognise which responses deserve deeper probing, and judge when the respondent has revealed something the researcher had not anticipated. This combination of guidance and restraint is difficult, which is why careful selection and training of interviewers is treated as a prerequisite for reliable results.

Applications in library and information science

Focused interviews are well suited to studying how people use information resources and services. A researcher might interview students who have all used a newly redesigned library catalogue, concentrating the discussion on their reactions to that specific system. Because every participant has shared the same experience, the responses can be meaningfully compared.

The method is especially useful for exploring user experiences, perceptions, and behaviours that surveys alone cannot capture. A questionnaire might show that satisfaction with a service dropped, but a focused interview can reveal why. For a country as diverse as India, where users span many languages, regions, and socioeconomic backgrounds, this kind of in-depth, flexible questioning helps researchers understand needs that standardised instruments would miss. The data gathered can then guide both hypothesis development and practical improvements to services.

Strengths and limitations

The main strength of the focused interview is the richness and relevance of the data it produces. Because the conversation stays anchored to a known situation, the findings are directly tied to the research objectives. The flexibility allows unexpected but valuable insights to surface, and the emphasis on depth captures the meaning behind reactions.

The limitations are also worth acknowledging. The method is time-consuming and demands a highly skilled interviewer, which raises costs. There is a real risk of interviewer bias, since the way questions are framed or followed up can shape the answers. Findings from a small number of focused interviews cannot be generalised to a whole population in the way that survey results can. For these reasons, focused interviews are often best used as one part of a larger research design rather than as a standalone method.
