When researchers want to understand human behaviour, opinions, and experiences, they need data that goes beyond simple numbers. This is where the interview method becomes one of the most valuable tools in survey research. An interview allows a researcher to sit across from a respondent and explore not just what people think, but why they think it. It captures the reasoning, emotion, and context that a tick-box questionnaire simply cannot reach. Understanding how interviews work, and how the relationship between the interviewer and the respondent shapes the data, is essential for anyone learning research methodology.

What the interview method really means

An interview is a qualitative research method that relies on asking questions to collect data. It involves two or more people, where the interviewer poses questions and the interviewee responds. Unlike a casual chat, a research interview is a formal dialogue guided by a specific research goal. The conversation is purposeful, planned, and directed toward gathering information that helps answer a research question.

What sets interviews apart from other data collection tools is their ability to capture depth. A standard questionnaire gives respondents predetermined options to choose from. An interview, on the other hand, lets respondents express themselves in their own words and share their feelings, opinions, beliefs, and experiences. This makes the method especially powerful for discussing complex or sensitive topics that people may be reluctant to discuss in a group setting.

Why interviewing matters in survey research

Survey research often relies on large-scale questionnaires to gather data from many people quickly. These work well when researchers already know exactly what to ask. But surveys have a structural limit: they can only measure what the researcher thought to include. Interviews fill this gap by uncovering insights that no fixed questionnaire could anticipate.

The real strength of interviews lies in their flexibility. Unlike surveys, interviews allow researchers to adapt questions based on a participant’s responses and to ask follow-up questions that probe deeper into specific points. If a respondent says something unexpected or important, the interviewer can pause and explore it further. This responsiveness produces a rich, detailed picture of the topic being studied.

When interviews are the right choice

Interviews are not always the best method, but they shine in certain situations. They are ideal for exploratory research where the researcher is entering unfamiliar territory and does not yet know which questions matter most. They suit studies of personal experiences, such as how people cope with illness, respond to a new government scheme, or react to a major life event. They also work well for sensitive subjects where respondents need a comfortable, private setting to speak honestly.

In short, when a study needs to understand individual motivations and lived experiences rather than broad statistical trends, the interview method becomes the natural choice. Interviewing allows the investigator to obtain information that would be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain by any other method.

The main types of research interviews

Interviews are usually classified by how much structure they carry. The level of structure determines how rigid or flexible the conversation will be, and each type suits different research goals.

Structured interviews

Structured interviews use predetermined questions asked in a fixed order. The interviewer reads each question exactly as worded, and every respondent receives the same questions in the same sequence. This consistency makes it easy to compare answers across participants and to identify patterns in the data. Because the questions are often closed-ended, structured interviews are largely a quantitative tool. Their main limitation is that the rigid format leaves little room to explore unexpected responses.

Unstructured interviews

Unstructured interviews sit at the opposite end. Sometimes called discovery interviews, they flow more like a guided conversation than a fixed question-and-answer session. None of the questions are set in advance, which gives the researcher freedom to follow the respondent’s lead. Unstructured interviews are most useful for analysing attitudes and values because they let the researcher probe a respondent’s subjective point of view in depth. The trade-off is that the data is harder to compare across participants and rarely supports broad generalisation.

Semi-structured interviews

Semi-structured interviews combine the best of both approaches. The researcher begins with a flexible set of guiding questions but is free to digress, probe deeper, and explore themes as they emerge. This format is the most common in social science and psychology research. It balances consistency across interviews with openness to unanticipated insights. A researcher studying the impact of a welfare policy, for example, might start with specific questions about the scheme and then explore how it has affected different individuals in unexpected ways.

The dynamics between interviewer and interviewee

An interview is not a one-way extraction of information. It is a social interaction between two people, and the quality of that interaction directly shapes the quality of the data. Understanding this relationship is one of the most important skills a researcher can develop.

The role of rapport

Rapport is the sense of comfort and trust built between the interviewer and the respondent. It is a key aspect of any interaction between two relative strangers, and it strongly affects how willing a respondent is to disclose information. When rapport is strong, especially on personal or sensitive topics, people open up more freely and share richer, more honest answers.

Yet rapport is a double-edged sword. Research has shown that it can sometimes have an adverse effect on data quality. More experienced interviewers may unintentionally obtain higher levels of acquiescence, where respondents tend to agree with questions without fully considering their content. This can happen because respondents want to avoid offending a friendly interviewer or disrupting a pleasant conversation. A skilled researcher therefore aims for enough rapport to encourage honesty without letting the relationship distort the answers.

Understanding interviewer bias

Interviewer bias refers to the ways the interviewer, rather than the questions themselves, can influence a respondent’s answers. The interviewer’s sex, age, ethnicity, social class, level of education, or professional background may affect how participants respond, particularly when these traits relate to the interview topic. Even body language, facial expression, and tone of voice can subtly shape responses.

Bias can also arise from the interviewer’s own expectations. If a researcher assumes that two groups will answer differently, they may unconsciously phrase questions, use prompts, or record responses in ways that confirm that assumption. In survey interviews, this kind of bias pushes respondents toward answers that deviate from the truth, such as under-reporting a behaviour they feel embarrassed about.

Social desirability and the interviewer effect

A closely related challenge is the interviewer effect, where the interviewer’s presence and characteristics shape the dynamics of the conversation. One of its most common consequences is social desirability bias, where respondents give answers they think are more acceptable rather than their true feelings. When discussing topics like health behaviour or personal habits, people may overreport socially approved actions and underreport those they expect to be judged for.

Managing the human element

Because the interviewer plays such a central role, careful preparation is essential. Interviewer selection and training may be one of the most important tasks for the researcher. Recognising the potential for bias, paying attention to respondent characteristics, and analysing the demands of the study all help maximise the accuracy of the data collected.

Interestingly, even highly standardised survey interviews rarely stay perfectly scripted. A study of UK survey data found that standardised interviewing often involves extensive unscripted conversation between the interviewer and respondent. While these exchanges can improve response accuracy and cooperation, they can also threaten reliability. The takeaway is that better training in conversational techniques benefits researchers even when they use strict, standardised methods.

Combining interviews with surveys

The smartest research designs often do not choose between interviews and surveys at all. They use both. Surveys are excellent for identifying broad trends across a large group, while interviews help explore the individual experiences and motivations behind those trends. Used together, they give researchers a far more complete understanding than either method could provide alone.

A researcher might first run a wide survey to spot a pattern, then conduct interviews with a smaller selected group to understand why that pattern exists. This mixed approach pairs the breadth of quantitative data with the depth of qualitative insight, strengthening the overall findings.
