Every policy decision, marketing campaign, and public service in the country rests on one quiet activity: someone systematically studying how people live, think, and behave. That activity is social research. It is the disciplined process of investigating human behaviour and social conditions at scale, and it shapes everything from how a government measures poverty to how a library decides which journals to subscribe to. For students of research methodology, understanding social research is the first step toward asking good questions about society and finding reliable answers.

What social research actually means

Social research is the scientific and systematic study of social phenomena, aimed at adding to our knowledge of how society functions. It is not casual observation or opinion. It follows a structured process: defining a problem, collecting data, analysing it, and interpreting the findings to draw meaningful conclusions.

The classic definition comes from Prof. C.A. Moser, who described social research as a systematised investigation undertaken to gain new knowledge about social phenomena and problems. The sociologist P.V. Young saw it as a scientific undertaking that uses logical methods to discover new facts, verify old ones, and trace the connections between them. What unites these definitions is a single idea: society can be studied with the same rigour we apply to the natural world, even though human behaviour is far less predictable than physical matter.

The core purpose is to understand large-scale social behaviour and conditions. Why do some regions report higher literacy than others? How do families change as a country urbanises? What makes one community adopt a new technology faster than another? These are the questions social research is built to answer.

The scope of social research

The scope is genuinely vast because it covers every aspect of human life that is shaped by social interaction. Researchers study social institutions like family, religion, education, and the economy, examining their structure and their role in maintaining order or driving change. They investigate how societies evolve through industrialisation, globalisation, and modernisation, and what these processes do to culture and identity.

Social research also serves practical goals. It supports evidence-based policy development, giving decision-makers reliable data instead of guesswork. It helps identify social problems and their underlying causes, which is the foundation for any meaningful intervention. And it allows researchers to predict future trends, whether that means forecasting population growth or anticipating how a new technology will reshape daily life.

Techniques for conducting social surveys

A social survey is a research method used to collect data from a sample of individuals in order to understand a social phenomenon. Surveys are valued because they let researchers gather information from large groups efficiently, which makes it possible to generalise findings to a broader population. The main techniques fall into three families: interviews, questionnaires, and observational studies.

Interviews

An interview is a direct exchange in which the researcher asks questions and records the respondent’s answers. Interviews can be structured, following a fixed list of questions in a set order, or unstructured, allowing a free-flowing conversation that adapts to each respondent. Many researchers use a semi-structured format that combines a planned framework with room for follow-up questions.

The major strength of the interview is depth. Because the interviewer is present, they can clarify confusing questions, probe inconsistent answers, and judge the quality of responses using cues like body language. This flexibility comes at a cost: interviews are more expensive and time-consuming than written methods, and the personal interaction can introduce variability between respondents.

Questionnaires

A questionnaire is a self-administered written instrument that respondents complete on their own. It is the workhorse of large-scale social research. Questionnaires can reach a large audience at relatively low cost, and they remove the influence of an interviewer’s presence. They do carry risks: if a question is poorly worded, respondents may misunderstand it, and there is no one present to correct the error.

Good questionnaire design matters enormously. Questions should be clear, neutral, and free of bias. Closed-ended questions offer a fixed set of response options, which makes the data easy to analyse statistically but limits the richness of answers. Open-ended questions invite respondents to answer in their own words, capturing nuance at the cost of harder interpretation. Best practice includes pilot-testing the questionnaire before full rollout and accounting for the literacy level and cultural background of respondents.

The way questions are phrased can shape the answers, producing what researchers call response bias. A related problem is social desirability bias, where people give answers they think are acceptable rather than truthful. These are constant concerns in survey design.

Observational studies

In observation, the researcher watches and systematically records behaviour rather than asking about it. This can be participant observation, where the researcher joins the group being studied, or structured observation, where behaviour is recorded against predefined categories. A major advantage is that observation captures actual behaviour rather than self-reported behaviour, sidestepping the problem of respondents misremembering or misrepresenting themselves.

Observation has its own well-known limitation: the Hawthorne effect, where people change their behaviour simply because they know they are being watched. Researchers must also handle ethical concerns like informed consent, and they need a clear, systematic protocol to keep observer bias in check.

Sampling: the backbone of any survey

No survey can question an entire population, so researchers study a sample, a smaller subset chosen to represent the larger group. Sampling can be probability-based, such as random sampling where every individual has a known chance of selection, or non-probability-based, such as convenience sampling. The quality of the sample determines whether the findings can be trusted to reflect the population. A biased sample produces biased results, no matter how well the questions are written.

India offers a textbook example of large-scale survey work. The National Sample Survey, conducted by the National Sample Survey Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, runs nationwide socio-economic surveys using scientific sampling methods. Launched in 1950 on the vision of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, it interviews sample households selected through a careful design and covers nearly the entire country. Its data on consumption, employment, health, and education has become the principal source for policy planning and research, demonstrating how rigorous survey technique turns scattered individual responses into a reliable national picture.

The relevance of social research in library science

Libraries exist to serve users, so they need to know who their users are and what those users need. This is exactly where social research earns its place in library and information science. The methods described above are applied directly to the study of library users, in a branch of the field known as user studies.

Understanding user needs through user studies

A user study is a research method designed to gather insights into how library users interact with services, resources, and facilities. The aim is to understand user needs, preferences, and behaviours so that libraries can improve what they offer. Rather than designing services on the basis of tradition or assumption, user studies provide empirical evidence about what users actually want.

The historical roots of this work run deep. The focus on the information user took shape around the time of the Royal Society Scientific Information Conference of 1948, which marks the beginning of the modern study of human information-seeking behaviour. Over the following decades, the field shifted from a system-centred view to a user-centred one, and information behaviour research became a standard part of library science education.

How libraries apply survey techniques

The connection is practical and direct. A library that wants to know whether students are satisfied with its e-resources can run a questionnaire. One that wants to understand why certain study spaces are always crowded can use observation. One that wants detailed feedback on a new self-checkout system can conduct interviews or focus groups.

The payoff is concrete. By observing and analysing how users access information, libraries can make data-driven decisions that improve the user experience and make better use of limited resources. A survey might reveal that users want more online databases, or that a particular platform is hard to navigate. Usage data might show which collections are heavily used and which are ignored, guiding decisions about what to expand and what to discontinue.

User studies also help libraries design catalogues, digital libraries, and discovery services around real information behaviour. As technology changes the way people find and use information, this kind of continuous study is what keeps a library relevant rather than guessing in the dark.

From data to better service

The full value of social research in libraries appears when the data is acted upon. A study that identifies overcrowded study rooms can justify investment in more space or a better booking system. Feedback that shows confusion about a new service can lead to clearer instructions or staff training. In this way, the librarian becomes a kind of social researcher, using interviews, questionnaires, and observation to bridge the gap between the resources a library holds and the needs of the community it serves.
