This is exactly the space where applied research operates. It takes the rigour of scientific method and points it at problems that need fixing today.

Applied research is a systematic investigation aimed at solving a specific, practical problem. Instead of chasing knowledge for its own sake, it uses scientific methodology to generate empirical observations that solve critical problems in society. The defining feature is its purpose. The researcher is not asking “why does this phenomenon exist?” but rather “how do we fix this issue?”
Consider the difference in mindset. A basic researcher might study how human memory encodes information. An applied researcher takes that understanding and uses it to design a better library signage system so patrons can locate sections faster. The first builds a theory. The second builds a solution.
The core characteristics
Applied research carries a few recognisable traits that separate it from other approaches. Focus on a specific problem: it concentrates on a defined issue faced by an organisation or community, not a broad universal question. Practical relevance: the findings must be usable in the real world and offer actionable insights that an institution can implement. Empirical evidence: it relies on data collected through methods such as surveys, interviews, case studies, and experiments. Collaboration with practitioners: it frequently involves working alongside the very people who face the problem, which keeps the work grounded in practical reality.
Because the goal is implementation, applied research tends to use structured and targeted methodologies such as surveys, experiments, and evaluations to assess the efficacy of interventions. The outcome is rarely a new theory. It is usually a recommendation, a redesigned process, or a tested intervention that someone can put to use straight away.
The types of applied research
Applied research is not a single rigid method. It branches into several recognisable forms depending on the goal. Evaluation research assesses whether an existing programme, service, or policy is meeting its intended objectives. A study examining whether a new mobile lending service actually reduced overdue returns would fall here. Research and development focuses on creating new products or services to meet specific user needs, such as designing a new discovery interface for a digital library. Action research involves practitioners studying and improving their own practice in real time, often in a continuous cycle of plan, act, observe, and reflect.
These categories overlap in practice. A single project might evaluate an existing system while also developing an improved version. What unites them is the shared commitment to producing results that work in “nonpure” research conditions, because the data are needed to help solve a real-life problem.
Examples in library and information science
Libraries are ideal settings for applied research because they constantly balance limited resources against growing user demands. Almost every operational decision a library makes can be informed by evidence rather than guesswork. Below are some of the most common areas where this plays out.
Solving space constraints
Space is one of the most persistent problems in any library, especially in crowded academic institutions where student numbers keep rising. Applied research helps managers decide how to use every square metre effectively. A study might track how different sections of a library get used across the day, identifying which areas sit empty and which overflow.
This is where circulation data becomes valuable. Analysis of borrowing records can address many issues, including collection acquisition policies, allocating funding for materials, and deciding how to allocate physical space for materials. If a study shows that a large portion of a print collection has not circulated in a decade, that evidence supports a decision to move those titles to compact storage and free up reading space. The decision rests on data, not on intuition.
Improving circulation systems
Circulation, the process of borrowing and returning materials, is central to library operations. Managing it efficiently becomes harder as collections and patron numbers grow. Applied research in this area examines how different circulation models affect user satisfaction and operational efficiency.
A study might compare self-checkout stations against traditional staffed desks. The researcher could measure how long patrons spend at checkout, how often technical issues arise, and how these factors shape satisfaction. By analysing this evidence, a library can decide whether self-checkout would genuinely cut wait times before investing in the equipment. Modern tools make this easier, since RFID tags have been placed in library items since the early 2000s to track whereabouts and circulation data, which gives researchers a rich stream of behavioural data to work with.
Data mining takes this further. One study of academic library borrowing analysed more than a hundred thousand transactions to discover user book loan patterns and develop a recommender system that suggests relevant titles to patrons. This is applied research at its most practical: existing data converted directly into an improved service.
Evaluating digital services and user experience
As libraries adopt digital catalogues, mobile apps, and virtual reference services, applied research helps determine whether these tools actually help users. A common project examines how well patrons navigate a library website, identifies the points where they get stuck, and recommends specific design improvements.
The same approach applies to electronic resources, reference desk performance, and even staff training programmes. The pattern is always the same. Define the problem, gather evidence on how the current system performs, analyse it, and recommend a concrete change. Because libraries serve diverse communities with varying levels of digital comfort, this user-centred evidence is essential for spending budgets wisely.
The link between applied and basic research
It is tempting to treat applied and basic research as rivals, but they are partners. Applied research rarely starts from nothing. It draws on theories, models, and frameworks that basic research produced earlier. As one description puts it, applied research serves as a follow-up to basic or pure research, aiming to identify solutions to specific issues at individual, group, or societal levels.
A continuum, not a divide
The two forms exist in a continuous relationship where each feeds the other. Basic research generates foundational knowledge. Applied research takes that knowledge and turns it into something usable. The results of applied work often raise fresh questions that send researchers back to fundamental investigation. They coexist in a symbiotic relationship, where findings from basic research often provide the foundational knowledge for applied research, and the results of applied research can inspire further basic investigations.
The classic illustration of this cycle is GPS. Einstein developed the theory of general relativity in 1915 with no practical application in mind, and decades later engineers used relativistic corrections to build accurate satellite navigation systems. Pure curiosity eventually powered a tool millions use daily. Library science has its own version of this. Theories of how people seek and process information, developed through basic research, become the foundation for applied projects that redesign catalogue interfaces or arrange collections for easier discovery.
Why the distinction still matters
Knowing whether your project is applied or basic shapes everything that follows. Basic research focuses on generating new knowledge and deepening theoretical understanding, while applied research is designed to address specific real-world problems or support decision-making in practical settings. This affects how you design the study, where you look for funding, and what timeline you follow.
For a working librarian or an information professional, applied research is usually the more immediately relevant path. It produces evidence that justifies a budget request, supports a policy change, or improves a service this year rather than in a distant future. Yet it would be poorer without the theoretical groundwork that basic research provides. The best applied projects are those that stand firmly on solid theory while keeping both feet planted in the practical problem at hand.
Understanding this relationship also protects against a common mistake: assuming that practical work needs no theory. A study that ignores established models risks reinventing the wheel or drawing flawed conclusions. The strongest applied research borrows the rigour and the conceptual frameworks of basic research and bends them toward a defined, solvable goal.
