Few people change an entire profession on their own, but S.R. Ranganathan did exactly that. A mathematician by training, he stumbled into librarianship almost by accident and went on to give libraries their first real scientific foundation. His ideas still shape how books are arranged, how catalogues are designed, and how libraries think about the people they serve. Understanding his life is a useful way to understand how library science grew into a respected academic discipline.

Early life and education
Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan was born on 9 August 1892 in Shiyali, a small town in present-day Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a traditional Tamil Brahmin family that valued learning. He completed his early schooling in Sirkazhi and then moved to study at Madras Christian College, where mathematics became his main subject.
Ranganathan earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mathematics. Around the same time he also qualified as a teacher. For the first part of his working life, he had nothing to do with libraries at all. He worked as a professor of mathematics, teaching at colleges in Mangalore, Coimbatore, and finally at Presidency College in Madras. He published academic work on the history of mathematics and even wrote a biography of the famous mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan years later.
This mathematical background turned out to be the hidden key to everything that followed. The precision and logical structure he learned as a mathematician would later let him treat the messy problem of organising knowledge as a system with rules, principles, and proofs.
An unexpected turn towards librarianship
In 1924, the University of Madras created a new post of first librarian of the University of Madras. Ranganathan applied, partly because the job promised more time for academic pursuits. He was the only applicant with a research background, which mattered to the selection committee even though he had no formal training in library work. By his own account, his entire knowledge of libraries at that point came from an encyclopaedia article he had read just before the interview.
He got the job, and he hated it at first. The work felt isolating and dull compared to teaching mathematics. He reportedly asked to return to his old profession soon after taking up the post. Instead, the university sent him to England to prepare for the role.
Training in London
Ranganathan studied at University College, London, under the librarian and classification expert W.C. Berwick Sayers. There he was exposed to Western library practices and visited a large number of British libraries. What struck him most was not the cataloguing technique but the spirit of the public library system, where libraries were active institutions meant to serve ordinary readers. He returned to India in 1925 determined to build something similar at home, and he held the Madras librarian post until 1944.
Building library science as a discipline
The reluctant librarian became a tireless reformer. Ranganathan was not satisfied with treating librarianship as a clerical job of stamping and shelving books. He wanted to give it a theoretical core, the way physics or mathematics has laws. His two most influential contributions came from this ambition.
The Five Laws of Library Science
In 1931, Ranganathan published the Five Laws of Library Science. These short statements completely reframed what a library is for:
Books are for use. A library exists so that books are read, not locked away or preserved untouched. This pushed libraries toward open access, better locations, and longer hours.
Every reader his or her book. Every person deserves access to the books they need, regardless of background, class, or education. This was a strong statement about equal access at a time when such ideas were not common.
Every book its reader. Every book has someone who will benefit from it, so the library should arrange and promote its collection so books reach the right people.
Save the time of the reader. Good organisation, clear catalogues, and helpful staff exist to make finding information quick and easy.
The library is a growing organism. A library is never finished. It must be designed to expand in its collection, its readers, and its staff over time.
These laws look simple, almost obvious. That is exactly their power. They shifted libraries from being book warehouses to user-centred service institutions. Decades later, librarians still test new policies and even digital systems against these five principles.
The Colon Classification
Ranganathan was unhappy with the rigid, hierarchical classification systems of his time, especially the Dewey Decimal Classification, which he found too inflexible for the way knowledge actually grows and overlaps. In 1933 he published his own answer, the Colon Classification.
Instead of forcing every book into one fixed slot, the Colon Classification was faceted and analytico-synthetic. It broke a subject down into separate components, or facets, and then combined them using connecting symbols, the colon being the most important, which is how the system got its name. Ranganathan organised these facets into five fundamental categories, often summarised as Personality, Matter, Energy, Space, and Time.
This approach let a librarian describe a complex, multi-subject book accurately without waiting for a central authority to invent a new number for it. The idea was ahead of its time. Faceted classification now underpins how online databases, e-commerce filters, and search systems let users narrow results by multiple attributes at once. The Colon Classification went through several editions, the seventh appearing in 1987, though it has been used mainly in selected Indian libraries rather than worldwide.
Later career and national impact
Ranganathan’s influence spread well beyond classification theory. After leaving Madras, he served as librarian and professor at Banaras Hindu University from 1945 to 1947, then taught at the University of Delhi from 1947 to 1955, helping to build the first Indian school of librarianship to offer higher degrees. He led the Indian Library Association as its president from 1944 to 1953. He admitted he was not a natural administrator, and his term ended in some controversy when the Delhi Public Library chose Dewey’s system over his own.
The fight for free public libraries
One of Ranganathan’s deepest commitments was making library access a public right backed by law. He had been campaigning for library legislation since the 1930s through the Madras Library Association. After independence, conditions finally became favourable. Working with the Education Minister Avinashilingam Chettiar, his efforts led to the passing of the Madras Public Libraries Act of 1948, the first such law enacted in independent India.
This was a landmark. The Act put public libraries on a proper legal and financial footing, creating library authorities and funding them through a small library cess on property tax. The Connemara Public Library in Madras became the state central library under it. Several other states later modelled their own library laws on this template. Ranganathan also drafted a wider thirty-year library development plan with a model bill for the whole country.
Research institutions and recognition
Ranganathan helped the government set up key institutions, including INSDOC in 1952 and, most importantly, the Documentation Research and Training Centre at the Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore in 1962. The DRTC trained generations of information professionals and became his base for the rest of his life.
Honours followed his contributions. He received the title Rao Sahib in 1935, an honorary doctorate from the University of Delhi in 1948, and the Padma Shri in 1957. In 1965, the government gave him the rare title of National Research Professor in library science. At the time, only four other people held such a designation, in fields like physics and law, which shows how seriously his work was taken. He also received the Margaret Mann Citation from the American Library Association in 1970. He passed away in Bangalore in 1972.
A lasting legacy
Ranganathan’s biggest achievement was turning librarianship from a clerical occupation into a scientific discipline with its own theory. The title Father of Library Science in India is no exaggeration, and his birthday on 12 August is observed across the country as National Librarian’s Day.
His ideas have aged remarkably well. The Five Laws are quietly embedded in how digital libraries, search engines, and recommendation systems are designed, and his faceted approach to classification anticipated the way modern information systems organise data. After his death, the FID established a Ranganathan award in his memory, and his principles remain a core part of library science curricula worldwide. A reluctant librarian who once wanted to return to teaching mathematics ended up reshaping how the world organises knowledge.
