When researchers want to know how people actually behave, they have two basic choices: ask them, or watch them. Surveys and interviews rely on what people say they do, which is often very different from what they really do. The observation method removes this gap by studying behaviour directly as it happens. It is one of the oldest data collection techniques in the social sciences, yet it remains central to fields like sociology, psychology, anthropology, education, and library science. This post unpacks the core purposes of observation: capturing human behaviour in real time, testing and refining theories, and opening up fresh insight into research problems.

What the observation method actually does

Observation is a primary data collection technique in which the researcher gathers information by systematically watching behaviours, events, and interactions in their natural setting. Instead of depending on a respondent’s memory or willingness to report honestly, the researcher records what is happening firsthand. The process involves more than just looking. Watching, listening, and recording behaviour and the characteristics of a phenomenon all form part of the method.

Psychologists describe observation as a sequence of mental stages. First comes sensation, where the sense organs receive a stimulus. Then comes attention, the deliberate act of concentrating on what matters. Finally there is perception, where the mind interprets the sensory information and recognises facts. This is why two people can watch the same classroom and notice completely different things. Training and experience sharpen the observer’s ability to perceive what is relevant rather than simply registering raw activity.

Because the method depends on a human observer interpreting events, researchers usually distinguish between structured and unstructured observation. Structured observation uses predefined checklists and coding sheets so that data stays consistent and can be analysed statistically. Unstructured observation is far more flexible, allowing the researcher to immerse themselves in a setting and follow patterns as they emerge. Both share the same fundamental purpose: getting close to behaviour as it genuinely occurs.

Capturing human behaviour as it happens

The first and most important purpose of observation is to record behaviour in its natural flow. People do not always do what they claim. They forget, they exaggerate, and they sometimes shape their answers to look better. Observation sidesteps this problem by capturing conduct directly, producing what researchers often call a graphic description of social life.

A major strength here is access to non-verbal information. Body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, hesitation, and the way people position themselves in a space all carry meaning that rarely surfaces in a questionnaire. Observation also delivers strong contextual richness, helping researchers understand environmental influences and social interactions that other methods miss entirely.

Studying behaviour people are not aware of

Some of the most valuable behaviour is behaviour that participants themselves cannot describe, because it has become automatic. The way shoppers move through a store, how commuters queue, or how staff respond to background music are all subconscious patterns. People cannot reliably report on actions they do not consciously notice, which makes observation the only practical route to studying them. This is also why the method works well when the subject occurs in public and involves a social process or mass activity.

Capturing complex social situations

Observation is particularly suited to studying collective behaviour and complex social situations. It allows the researcher to follow the individual units that make up a situation, understand the whole and its parts in relation to each other, and pick up the out-of-the-way details that surveys flatten out. A library researcher, for example, can watch how a reading area is actually used: who sits where, how long they stay, when noise rises, and how patrons negotiate shared space. None of this would emerge cleanly from a feedback form.

The challenge of being watched

Capturing natural behaviour comes with a famous complication. When people know they are being observed, they often change how they act. This is the Hawthorne effect, sometimes called the observer effect, and it threatens the validity of findings because what is recorded may no longer represent normal conduct. A study of hospital hand-washing found that compliance was far higher when staff knew they were being watched than when they were not. Good observational research is designed with this risk in mind, which is one reason covert observation is sometimes used to avoid the distortion that awareness creates.

Validating and extending theories

The second major purpose of observation is to test theories against the real world. A theory is only useful if it holds up outside a textbook. Observation lets researchers take a proposed explanation of behaviour and check whether it actually plays out in natural settings, confirming, challenging, or refining it in the process.

The clearest illustration of this is the set of studies conducted at Western Electric’s Hawthorne Works near Chicago during the 1920s and 1930s. Researchers, including Elton Mayo and his colleagues, originally set out to observe how factors like lighting affected worker productivity. What they found upended the prevailing assumption that pay was the dominant motivator. Productivity seemed to rise simply because workers were receiving attention and felt part of something. These observations influenced the development of industrial and organisational psychology and gave rise to the human relations school of management, which stressed psychological and social needs in the workplace.

This example shows both sides of observation’s theory-validating power. It can overturn an existing assumption, and it can generate an entirely new concept. The Hawthorne effect itself is not a theory but an observational phenomenon, derived directly from watching how people behaved when they knew they were under study.

Building theory from the ground up

Observation does not only test theories handed down from elsewhere; it can build them. In anthropology, participant observation involves the researcher immersing themselves in a community’s daily life for an extended period, often a year or more, learning the language and joining everyday activities while recording customs, behaviours, and interactions. This kind of immersive fieldwork produces a deep, holistic understanding of a culture that becomes the raw material for new theoretical claims. The tradition traces back to Bronisław Malinowski, whose long stay among the people he studied set the template for modern ethnography.

Why observation strengthens validity

One reason researchers trust observational data is its high degree of validity. Because behaviour is recorded as it occurs rather than as it is reported, the findings tend to reflect reality more faithfully than self-reported measures. Participant observation in particular is valued for the strong validity it achieves, since the researcher witnesses the full context rather than a participant’s edited summary of it. To keep this validity intact, careful researchers practise reflexivity, constantly questioning their own interpretations and biases, and use triangulation by combining observation with other methods.

Gaining deeper insight into research problems

The third purpose of observation is exploratory: it helps researchers understand a problem more deeply, often before they even know exactly what to ask. At the start of a study, the questions may be vague. By watching a situation unfold, the researcher can identify patterns and trends that inform subsequent phases of research, shaping sharper hypotheses and better-designed interviews or surveys later on.

Observation is uniquely good at surfacing the unexpected. A survey can only return answers to the questions it contains, but observation can reveal something the researcher never thought to ask about. This makes it a powerful tool for exploring complex social dynamics that structured instruments tend to overlook.

Generating a permanent record

A practical advantage that supports deeper analysis is documentation. Observation can produce a lasting record through field notes, photographs, and audio or video recordings. These records can be revisited long after the fieldwork ends, allowing the researcher to re-examine details, check interpretations, and improve the accuracy of conclusions. Notes are most reliable when written up promptly, ideally on the day of the fieldwork, capturing the sequence of events, any interruptions, and the observer’s own reflections.

Observation in library and information science

These insight-generating qualities translate directly into library research. Understanding how a collection is browsed, how signage guides movement, or how users behave at a reference desk is far easier to study by watching than by asking. Patrons may not consciously know why they avoid a particular section or struggle with a catalogue terminal, but a careful observer can spot the pattern and use it to redesign the service. Observation here becomes a diagnostic tool, turning a vague sense that “something is not working” into a specific, actionable research problem.

Where observation fits among research methods

Observation is not a replacement for surveys, interviews, or experiments; it is a complement to them. Its great strength is showing what people do, while interviews are better at uncovering why they do it. The most robust studies often combine the two, using observation to capture genuine behaviour and follow-up questioning to interpret it. Understanding the purpose of observation, capturing conduct, testing theory, and deepening insight, helps a researcher decide when watching will tell them something that asking never could.
