A review is a secondary information product that gathers scattered primary literature, evaluates it, and presents a clear picture of what is currently known about a topic. Reviews have long been recognised as one of the most important forms of scientific communication, and the rapid growth of primary literature has only increased the need for them.

What reviews are in the world of information products

A review is a critical synthesis of the published literature on a defined subject. It does not report fresh experimental data the way a primary research article does. Instead, it studies, interprets, analyses, and evaluates existing primary sources, then organises that information in a systematic and readable form. Because a review is built from earlier publications rather than original findings, it sits firmly in the category of secondary sources, alongside bibliographies, textbooks, and encyclopaedia entries.

The core job of a review is consolidation. Specialists publish their latest findings in primary periodicals, and these findings remain scattered across many journals and languages. A review pulls them together, weighs their value, and distils the state of knowledge so that a reader can grasp the field without hunting through every original paper. This is why review journals are sometimes described as the main forum for understanding where a discipline currently stands.

Characteristics of reviews

Reviews share a set of features that separate them from both primary research articles and quick summaries. Understanding these characteristics helps you recognise a genuine review and judge its quality.

They are critical and evaluative, not just descriptive

A good review does more than list what has been published. The author analyses and evaluates current research related to a specific topic, field, or problem, pointing out strengths, weaknesses, agreements, and contradictions in the literature. They are comprehensive in scope

Reviews are often as long as, or longer than, original research articles, precisely because they attempt to cover an entire topic rather than a single experiment. They aim to give a rounded view of a subject, including published literature, research in progress, and emerging trends.

The process of preparing reviews

Writing a review is a structured task, not a casual summary. The preparation can be broken into clear stages, each requiring care and judgement.

Studying the users

The first step is to identify who the review is for. A review meant for active researchers in a narrow specialism will look very different from one meant for students, teachers, or policy makers. Literature reviews support knowledge advancement by collecting, describing, analysing, and integrating large bodies of information, but the depth and language must match the intended audience. Understanding the user shapes every later decision.

Selecting relevant sources

Next comes the gathering of material. The reviewer searches the primary literature systematically, collecting journal articles, conference papers, and reports relevant to the chosen topic. The aim is to find the significant work without drowning in the irrelevant. In more rigorous forms of review, this search follows a defined strategy so that the coverage is transparent and can be repeated by others.

Evaluating and synthesising

The heart of the process is synthesis. The reviewer reads the selected sources, assesses their quality, and then weaves the findings into a coherent account. Types and functions of reviews

Reviews come in several forms, and the boundaries between them have shifted over time. A widely cited framework by Grant and Booth described a typology of 14 review types and their associated methodologies, which shows just how varied this family of documents has become. For study purposes, a few broad distinctions are most useful.

Narrative reviews

A narrative or literature review offers a broad, qualitative overview of a topic. It refers to an examination and general synthesis of the research literature, often with a wide scope, and does not follow a fixed protocol. These are usually written by experts to give context and insight, and they are valuable for understanding the big picture of a field.

Systematic reviews

A systematic review takes a far more structured approach. It follows clear, predefined protocols and a deliberately designed search strategy tied to a specific research question, and every step is documented so that other researchers can judge whether the review is comprehensive. Because of this rigour, well-conducted systematic reviews are treated as a high level of evidence, especially in medicine and the health sciences.

Bibliographic and instructional reviews

Reviews can also be classified by their main function. A bibliographic review focuses on identifying and organising the literature itself, serving as a guide to sources on a subject. An instructional review is written to teach, explaining a topic to newcomers or students who need a structured introduction rather than the cutting edge of debate. Closely related products include state-of-the-art reports and trend reports, which provide consolidated information on a specific subject and give first-hand information about research and development being carried out in a country or across the world.

The main functions of reviews

Whatever their form, reviews serve a common set of purposes. They keep specialists up to date by summarising recent advances, saving the time of researchers who cannot read everything themselves. They help newcomers enter a field by offering a structured map of it. They reveal gaps in current knowledge and suggest directions for future research. They support policy makers and decision takers who need a reliable overview rather than raw data. And through their reference lists, they act as a back-up for literature searches still to come. A state-of-the-art review, in particular, captures a useful idea: this is where we are now, this is how we got here, and this is where we could be going.

Examples of reviews

Concrete examples make the category easier to grasp, and they range from highly specialised academic series to popular magazines.

Annual Reviews and review journals

The best-known examples are dedicated review journals. The Annual Review of Information Science and Technology (ARIST) is a classic case from the field of library and information science. It published review articles rather than empirical research, and for forty-five years it served as the main forum for scholarly review articles in information science. The wider Annual Reviews family of publications plays the same role across disciplines such as biochemistry, psychology, and sociology, with each volume devoted to surveying recent progress. ARIST is a collection of peer-reviewed, comprehensive reviews whose goal is to update readers on the latest developments in the field, which captures the purpose of the whole genre.

Reviews are not limited to scholarly journals. Magazines such as Scientific American carry articles that summarise and interpret research for a broader, educated readership. These pieces evaluate and repackage findings from the primary literature so that non-specialists can follow developments in science and technology. They show that the reviewing function operates at many levels, from the dense academic survey to the accessible popular article.

Review sections within journals

Finally, many ordinary research journals include review articles and book reviews alongside their original research. Literature reviews and review articles, including book and movie reviews, are standard examples of secondary sources. So even a journal that mainly publishes primary research often contributes to the review literature, helping readers keep track of new books and consolidating knowledge as it accumulates.

Why reviews matter for information work

For anyone studying information sources and services, reviews are a key link in the chain of scholarly communication. They sit between the flood of primary literature and the reader who needs to make sense of it. By distilling, evaluating, and organising research, they make knowledge usable. They also feed into other information products, since their reference lists and syntheses become starting points for new bibliographies, new research, and new reviews. Recognising the characteristics, preparation, types, and examples of reviews helps you select the right source for a given need and judge how much trust to place in it.
