As libraries and information institutions move more of their services into the digital space, the content developer has become one of the most important members of the information team. A content developer is an information professional responsible for creating, organising, and curating digital content for websites and other online platforms. The role combines writing and editing with technical and design knowledge. A content developer does not just produce text. In the library and information science (LIS) field, this role grew naturally out of traditional library functions. Libraries have always collected, organised, and shared information. Creating and editing content

The first responsibility is producing the content itself. This includes writing web pages, guides, research help articles, descriptions of collections, and announcements. Content developers also adapt existing material for the web. A printed brochure cannot simply be copied onto a website. It must be rewritten for online reading, where users scan rather than read word by word. Good web writing is clear, short, and structured for quick understanding.

Structuring information

Creating content is only half the job. The other half is organising it so people can find it. This is where the LIS background becomes valuable. Skills such as cataloguing, indexing, taxonomy, and metadata are central to information architecture, the structural design of shared information environments. Information architecture combines organisation, labelling, search, and navigation systems within a website. A content developer designs site maps, decides how pages link together, and builds navigation menus that match how users think.

Working with content management systems

Most digital content today lives inside a content management system (CMS). A CMS is software that lets users add, edit, and organise content without needing to write code for every page. This is the area where LIS professionals have a natural advantage. Training in cataloguing, metadata, taxonomy, and indexing teaches you how to turn a disorganised mass of material into a findable, searchable system. These are exactly the skills used to structure websites and digital collections. When information is findable and usable, every service built on top of it runs better.

Communication and design sense

Content developers must write well and think about the user. They often translate complex or technical material into language that ordinary visitors can understand. They also need a sense of visual design, knowing how layout, spacing, and headings affect readability. A page that is accurate but cluttered will still fail its readers.

Beyond producing content, content developers increasingly act as advisors. Institutions often do not know how best to present their information online. The content developer fills this gap. Content developers often have to navigate these problems. This is part of why the role demands both technical skill and professional judgement.

For LIS students, the content developer path offers strong prospects. The skills are transferable far beyond libraries. The same abilities that structure a library website are used by technology teams to organise websites, by healthcare providers to manage records, and by corporations to build internal knowledge systems. A foundation in library science, combined with web and CMS skills, opens doors in user experience, content strategy, and data management as well as in libraries themselves.
