Long before paper arrived in the subcontinent, knowledge was carried on the humble palm leaf. Entire libraries of poetry, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy were inscribed onto thin strips cut from palm trees and bound between wooden covers. What is remarkable is not just that people wrote on leaves, but that they developed a careful, multi-step process to turn a fragile green leaf into a writing surface that could survive humidity, insects, and centuries of handling. A well-prepared palm leaf manuscript could last several hundred years. This post walks through exactly how those leaves were selected, seasoned, protected, and sized for writing.

Choosing the right leaf

Everything began with selecting the correct leaf, and this choice mattered far more than it might seem. The leaf had to be at a precise stage of growth. A leaf that was too tender or too mature was rejected because both extremes caused problems. Very young leaves shrank and warped on drying, while old, dried-out leaves had almost no folding strength and tore easily. In Odisha, scribes traditionally chose leaves that were just about to open, cutting these tender green leaves from fully grown trees so that the leaf was firm but still flexible.

Two palm species supplied almost all manuscript leaves. The talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera) and the palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer) were the main sources. According to the educational design archive D’source, talipot leaves were somewhat stiff and thicker, which made them a favoured writing surface, while palmyra leaves were shorter. Talipot leaves were larger, thinner, and more durable, but the tree flowers only once in its long life, making good leaves a scarce and valuable resource. Palmyra was more abundant and frequently used in eastern India, especially in Odisha and Bengal.

Seasoning the leaves

A freshly cut palm leaf cannot be written on. It is moist, springy, and will rot. The process of treating raw leaves to make them fit for writing is called seasoning, and this is where most of the craft lay. Several methods of seasoning were practised across different regions, each suited to local climate and resources.

Sun-drying and shade-drying

Drying was the foundation of every method, but it had to be controlled. Direct, prolonged sun made leaves brittle and prone to cracking. For this reason many traditions favoured drying the cut leaves slowly in the shade rather than under harsh sunlight. In one common method, selected leaves were boiled in hot water, then dried in the shade and cut to length. The aim was to remove moisture gradually so the leaf stayed flexible enough to take fine incisions without snapping.

Burying in mud or water

One of the most distinctive seasoning techniques involved burying. In parts of western Odisha, leaves were first dried completely under the sun and then kept under the mud or silt of a pond for ten to fifteen days. After this soaking period they were removed, cleaned, and dried again in the sun. Some accounts describe leaves being buried in marshy water and kept wet for up to three months before use. This long, wet conditioning helped break down the soft inner tissue, leached out substances that attracted pests, and left a tougher, more uniform leaf behind.

Applying turmeric paste

Turmeric appears again and again in the records, and for good reason. After cleaning and drying, a paste of turmeric was applied to the surface of the leaves as a finishing treatment. In western Odisha, people sometimes hung their leaves in the kitchen, took them down, and then coated them with turmeric paste. Turmeric did double duty: it gave the leaf a pleasant tone and, more importantly, acted as a natural preservative because of its well-known antimicrobial properties.

Protecting leaves from insects

The greatest enemy of any organic writing material in a tropical climate is biological attack. Insects, termites, and fungi can destroy an unprotected leaf within a single damp season. Indian scribes understood this and built pest resistance directly into the preparation process, rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Boiling the leaves

Boiling was both a seasoning step and a protective one. Leaves were immersed in large vessels of water and boiled, and across India this controlled drying followed by boiling was a standard practice. The water was frequently more than plain water. It was often infused with natural additives such as turmeric or other plant extracts, so the heat killed existing organisms and the additives left behind a residue that discouraged new ones. In some parts of western Odisha, leaves were boiled along with paddy husk, then cleaned with a soft cloth and kept alternately under dew and sun for several days before polishing.

Smoke and oil treatments

Exposure to smoke was another widely used protective measure. The leaves used for manuscripts were typically dried and smoke-treated before being inscribed. Smoke-curing dried the leaf thoroughly while depositing a thin layer of compounds that pests find unappealing, and conservators today note that smoke has long served as an unexpected but effective preservation tool. Alongside smoke, oils were rubbed into the finished leaves. In the Kerala tradition, prepared leaves were smeared with lemongrass oil to guard against deterioration and termites. Such oils kept the leaf supple and added another chemical barrier against decay.

Herbal repellents and turmeric

The use of plant-based repellents was a hallmark of the Indian approach. Because turmeric has germicidal power, turmeric paste or turmeric-treated water was applied to leaves to prevent fungal attack. Beyond turmeric, a wide range of natural materials served as insect repellents from the very stage of preparing the writing material, including neem leaves, sweet flag, camphor, black cumin, and various plant juices. These substances had a major advantage over later chemical fumigants: they were largely non-toxic to handlers while still protecting the leaf. This is why these indigenous methods are still followed in some libraries and museums today.

Final preparation and sizing

Once seasoned and protected, the leaves were ready for the finishing stage that turned them into actual manuscript pages. Each leaf has a tough central ridge, or midrib, running along its length. This unwanted middle ridge was removed, and the usable portions were then pressed, polished, and trimmed to size.

Flattening and polishing

Dried leaves naturally curl, so they had to be flattened before use. The leaves were pressed under wooden planks to level them, the corners were trimmed neatly, and the surface was polished smooth. Polishing was essential because a rough surface would catch the stylus and tear, while a smooth one allowed the writer to incise fine, even letters. Often a smooth stone or shell was used to burnish the leaf until it had a slight sheen.

Cutting into strips

The leaves were then cut into long, narrow strips of uniform dimensions, producing the elongated rectangular pages we associate with palm leaf books. Sizes varied by region and species. Talipot leaves were larger and could be cut to longer pages, sometimes close to a metre in length, while palmyra strips were typically shorter and narrower. The standard manuscript page was usually long and slim, around 20 to 50 centimetres in length and only a few centimetres wide, reflecting the natural shape of the leaf.

Making the binding holes

The last preparatory step was creating the holes that would hold the manuscript together. One, two, or three holes were pierced along the leaf, depending on the tradition, and a string was passed through them. To make these holes cleanly, sharp iron tools and hot pointed instruments were used so the leaf would not split. A cord was then threaded through the holes, allowing dozens of leaves to be stacked, aligned, and secured between two wooden cover boards cut to the same dimensions. The result was the classic pothi format: a bundle of leaves that could be untied, read one page at a time, and tied shut again for storage.

Why the process mattered

Each step in this sequence had a clear purpose. Selecting a leaf of the right age gave the manuscript its baseline strength. Seasoning through drying, burying, and turmeric treatment removed moisture and stabilised the leaf. Boiling, smoke, and herbal oils built in resistance to the insects and fungi that thrive in a humid climate. Flattening, polishing, and sizing produced a practical, durable page. Together these methods explain how palm leaf manuscripts, made entirely from organic materials, managed to preserve India’s intellectual heritage for centuries before the printing press arrived.
