Open any well-made book and watch what happens at the spine. The pages fan out, lie reasonably flat, and the back flexes without cracking. That quiet reliability is not an accident of glue. It is the work of thread. Sewing is the structural heart of traditional bookbinding, the step that turns a stack of loose folded sections into a single durable object capable of surviving decades of handling. For anyone studying preservation and conservation, understanding how books are sewn is essential, because the sewing structure determines how a volume opens, how it ages, and whether it can be repaired when it eventually fails. This post walks through the three foundations of the process: setting up to sew, the stitching methods themselves, and the placement of the bands that hold everything together.

Setting up to sew
Before a single stitch is made, the binder prepares two things: the sewing frame and the text block itself. Skipping or rushing this preparation produces uneven, weak sewing, so this stage deserves real attention.
The sewing frame
The sewing frame is a simple wooden appliance whose basic design has barely changed in centuries. According to the American Institute for Conservation’s guidance on sewing and leaf attachment, sewing on raised supports is a method of securing the text block by lacing the supports into the boards, and the frame exists to hold those supports steady while the binder works. A typical frame has a flat base board for stability, two upright posts, and a horizontal crossbar whose height can be adjusted. The cords or tapes that will form the bands are tied to the crossbar at the top and anchored beneath the base using small pegs called keys.
The supports themselves come in two main forms. Cords, made of hemp or linen twine, produce the rounded raised bands associated with fine leather bindings. Flat woven tapes produce a smoother spine and are the standard choice for modern case bindings. One point worth remembering is tension. It is tempting to stretch the supports tight, but they only need to stand upright without slackness. Over-tightening pulls the sections together too hard, and the book then becomes impossible to round and back properly later in the process.
Marking up the text block
Marking up is the process of deciding and indicating exactly where the needle will pass through the fold of each section. These points are called sewing stations. The binder squares up the gathered sections, clamps them between boards in a press, and pencils consistent marks across the spine. Two of these marks sit very close to the head and tail of the book; these are the kettle-stitch stations, where the thread will turn and lock at each end. The remaining marks correspond to the positions of the bands.
Older manuals show that the number of bands is partly a matter of judgement. A historical bookbinding text notes that a very small book might be marked up for five bands but sewn on only three, with the remaining two added later as decorative false bands, because extra bands on a thin book add no real strength. The lesson for a conservator is that band spacing is a structural decision driven by the size and weight of the volume, not just appearance.
Sewing techniques
Once the frame is set and the stations are marked, the actual sewing begins. The two ideas to understand here are the all-along stitch that carries the thread through every section, the kettle stitch that locks the ends, and the saw-in method that changes how the supports sit in the spine.
The all-along stitch
All-along sewing is the most traditional and durable approach. The first section is laid on the frame with its marked fold facing up, and the needle enters at the kettle station, runs along the inside of the fold, exits at each support, loops around it, and re-enters. When the needle reaches the far end, the next section is placed on top and the thread travels back in the opposite direction. Each section is therefore fully attached to every band along its entire length, which is why this method is so strong. The trade-off is that it uses more thread and more time than shortcut methods.
The kettle stitch
The kettle stitch is the small but critical knot that links one section to the next at the head and tail. The head and tail are the weakest points of a multi-section book, because they take the most strain when a reader pulls a volume off a shelf by the spine. The kettle stitch reinforces exactly these points. A conservation-focused account from the Dorset History Centre describes how, when the thread exits the final hole of a section, the needle hooks under the thread of the previous section before moving into the next one, catching all the sections together as the binder works up the spine.
The name itself is revealing. It is widely understood to derive from the German ketteln, meaning to catch up a stitch, which is precisely what the action does. The kettle is also a direction-changing stitch: each time it is tied, the sewing reverses from one end of the spine toward the other. Tension matters here too. The stitch must be firm enough to hold but slightly flexible, because a kettle pulled too tight will simply tear through the paper.
The saw-in method
The saw-in, or recessed-cord, method takes a different route. Instead of resting the cords on top of the spine and sewing around them, the binder cuts shallow grooves across the back of the gathered sections with a fine tenon saw. The cords sit down inside these grooves, and the thread simply passes over them rather than wrapping fully around. A great deal of care is needed with the saw: the cuts must only be as deep as the thickness of the cord, never deep enough to slice into the printed text.
This technique is genuinely old. The Etherington and Roberts conservation dictionary records that recessed-cord sewing was used in France as early as 1580 and notes that, while it is inferior to flexible sewing in soundness, it sews faster and reduces the cost of later finishing operations because there are no raised bands to fill, straighten, or mould the leather around. Those efficiencies explain why the method spread quickly. The same dictionary’s entry on bands records that supports may be raised for flexible sewing or sawn-in for recessed-cord sewing, which is the core distinction a student should hold onto.
From a preservation standpoint, the saw-in method carries a real cost. Sawing channels into the spine physically weakens the paper at the very points where the thread pulls, and the thinner recessed cords are more likely to break than the heavier cords used in flexible sewing. This is why the technique, despite its speed, is generally avoided for material of lasting value.
Band placement and why it matters
The bands are not decoration that happens to be functional; they are the load-bearing skeleton of the book. Their placement and behaviour decide how well a volume survives use.
What the bands actually do
Three structural jobs fall to the bands. First, they spread the force of opening across the width of the spine, so no single point takes all the stress. Second, they form the attachment between the text block and the covers: in traditional work the cords extend beyond the sections and are laced directly into the board, creating the main mechanical link between the inside and outside of the book. Third, they create a flexible scaffold that lets the spine bend repeatedly without breaking. This is the network that allows a properly sewn book to be opened thousands of times.
The choice between raised and recessed bands changes how the spine moves. With recessed cords, the thread passes over rather than around the supports, which lets the hinges move more freely and the book open closer to flat. The conservation literature notes, however, that text blocks sewn on sunken cords are typically rounded and backed and do not open all the way back to the spine folds, and that the spine can throw up at a sharp angle that stresses the folds at the sewing stations. Flexible raised-band sewing, by contrast, distributes that movement more gently and is regarded as the stronger structure.
Sewing as a preservation decision
For a librarian or conservator, the sewing structure is the first thing to assess when a damaged volume arrives. Sewn bindings are treated as the standard for long-term keeping precisely because the thread network can be repaired. The Northeast Document Conservation Center advises that, where possible, the original signatures and sewing should be preserved, and that a book with intact sewing should simply be recased rather than rebound, while a volume with deteriorated sewing should be resewn through its original holes if it can be. Conservation training manuals reinforce the basics: a sewing needle should be small and blunt, with an eye no wider than its shaft, so that it does not open a hole larger than the thread can fill.
This is also why some industrial shortcuts are viewed with caution. Many commercial library binderies use oversewing, which involves milling off the original spine folds and machine-stitching the resulting loose leaves. The problem, as the description of oversewn binding explains, is that the technique binds the gutter very tightly, prevents the book from lying flat, and is essentially irreversible, since rebinding again means cutting away even more of the inner margin. The same trade-off has shown up in real conservation work; a Smithsonian Libraries case describes a 1931 volume bound with metal screw posts that rusted and damaged both the cloth and the leaves, requiring a fresh structure to rehabilitate it. Each of these examples points to the same principle: the way a book is sewn at the start determines how kindly it can be treated later.
Understanding these techniques connects directly to the daily decisions of collection care. A conservator who can read a book’s sewing can judge its condition accurately, choose between recasing and resewing, and decide whether a fragile item should be sent for professional treatment rather than routine rebinding. The thread, in other words, is where preservation begins.
