Open any well-used book in your college library and look closely at its spine. The way those pages are held together is the result of a careful, centuries-old process called binding. Binding is the set of operations that turns loose printed sheets into a single, durable volume that can survive years of handling, photocopying, and shelving. For libraries, it is far more than a cosmetic finish. Good binding decides whether a document lasts for decades or falls apart after a few semesters. What binding really means
At its core, binding is the process of folding, gathering, sewing, and covering printed pages so they form a protected, usable unit. The printed sheets do not arrive as single pages. They come as large sheets that must be folded and arranged before anything else can happen. The aim is to attach the pages to one another securely and then enclose them in a cover that shields them from dust, moisture, and rough handling.
The International Federation of Library Associations describes binding as an ancient library practice used to protect the book, make it easier to consult, and give it robustness during handling. That combination of protection and usability is the reason binding remains central to library work even in a digital age. A bound volume resists damage, stays organised in the correct page order, and can be placed on a shelf, labelled, and located again.
Key steps in the binding process
Binding follows a logical sequence. Each step prepares the material for the next, and skipping or rushing any stage weakens the final result. The traditional process can be broken down into folding, gathering, sewing, and covering, with a few supporting operations in between.
Folding sheets into sections
The process begins with folding. A single large printed sheet is folded one or more times to create a small bundle of leaves. This folded bundle is called a section, and it is also known as a signature, gathering, or forme. According to the standard definition of a section, it is a group of sheets folded in half and worked into the binding as a single unit. The section is the basic building block of a book.
Folding is done along the centre of the sheet so that, when complete, the pages fall into the correct reading order. A single sheet folded the right number of times typically yields pages in multiples of four, such as 8, 16, or 32 pages per section. The folds must be sharp and even, which is why binders traditionally use a bone folder to crease each sheet cleanly. Poor folding at this stage shows up later as crooked pages and uneven margins.
Gathering the sections in sequence
Once every sheet has been folded, the sections must be arranged in the correct order. This step is called gathering or collating. To make ordering easier, printers letter or number each sheet so that the binder can place the sections in the right sequence and confirm that none are missing. As the University of Toronto bookbinding guide explains, collating means examining the signatures after folding to make sure they are in the correct sequence.
Gathering is a quality-control checkpoint as much as an assembly step. A misplaced or inverted section means the book reads out of order, and a missing one leaves a gap that cannot be fixed without rebinding. At this stage the binder also adds endpapers, the stiff folded sheets attached inside the covers that help connect the text block to the cover later on. Once gathered and checked, the stack of ordered sections is ready to be joined together.
Sewing the sections together
Sewing is the step that gives a bound book much of its strength. The gathered sections are stitched together with thread, usually passed through small holes along each folded edge. In traditional binding, the thread is sewn through the folds of each section and over supports such as cords or tapes placed across the spine. The University of Illinois Preservation Self-Assessment Program notes that sewing over cords and tapes provides extra support to the text block, and that this through-the-fold sewing is among the most durable structures available.
Libraries also use other sewing methods depending on the material. The same source explains that oversewing, sometimes called library binding, was developed specifically for library use and became popular in the early twentieth century for protecting heavily used books. Oversewing is strong, but it removes a small strip from the inner margin and makes the book tighter in the gutter, so it does not open as flat. The choice of sewing method depends on how valuable the book is and how it will be used.
Gluing, rounding, and lining the spine
After sewing, the spine is treated to hold its shape and prepare it for the cover. A thin layer of flexible adhesive is worked along the spine, and a lining cloth, often called mull, is attached so that it extends beyond the spine on each side. These extensions are later glued to the cover boards to connect the text block firmly to the case. The spine is also rounded and backed, a process that shapes the spine into a gentle curve and creates a small ridge so the cover sits correctly. These supporting steps are what allow a thick book to open without cracking along the spine.
Applying the cover
The final step is covering. The text block is enclosed in a protective cover, which may be a stiff case made of boards wrapped in cloth, paper, or leather, or a flexible cover for lighter materials. In modern case binding, the cover is built separately as a case and then attached to the sewn text block using the endpapers and the spine lining. The cover protects the pages, carries the title for identification, and gives the volume the rigidity it needs to stand on a shelf. After covering, the book is pressed and left to dry so that all the adhesives set and the volume holds its final shape.
Purpose and significance of binding in libraries
Binding serves several purposes at once, and each matters for a library collection. The most obvious is holding the pages together so the document remains a single unit. Beyond that, binding adds durability. A sewn and cased volume can withstand repeated opening, photocopying, and transport far better than a stack of loose sheets or a cheaply glued paperback.
Binding also improves usability. A properly bound book opens cleanly, stays in page order, and can be labelled and shelved. For periodicals and journals, libraries often bind a year’s worth of individual issues into one volume so they are easier to store and less likely to go missing. Libraries frequently rebind commercially published books in sturdier library bindings precisely because publisher bindings are not built for the demands of shared, repeated use.
There is a preservation dimension too. For rare or historically important items, binding is treated as a conservation activity. The Northeast Document Conservation Center advises that original signatures and sewing should be preserved in fragile and special volumes wherever possible, and that such books should be recased rather than aggressively rebound. This reflects a key principle in modern conservation: keep as much of the original structure as you can, and intervene only as much as needed.
Challenges and common problems in binding
Binding can fail when any step is done poorly, and the consequences show up over time. The most frequent issues come from weak stitching, the wrong adhesives, and methods that prioritise speed or cost over durability.
Poor stitching and weak sewing structures
Sewing problems are a leading cause of early failure. When sections are sewn with too few stitching points or with shortcuts that reduce thread, each stitch carries more stress. A common shortcut is two-on sewing, where the needle passes through two sections before wrapping around the support. This saves time but, as conservation guidance notes, results in a less flexible binding that is more prone to failure because the reduced number of sewing points concentrates stress at each station. For archival materials, such shortcuts are generally avoided.
Low-quality adhesives
Adhesives are another weak point. Cheap or unsuitable glues can become brittle, lose their grip, or even damage the paper through acidity. In adhesive-only bindings, where pages are glued directly to the spine without sewing, the bond can fail and pages begin to detach. The PSAP guidance points out that while adhesive bindings are economical and suitable for short-term heavy use, they are generally considered inferior to sewn bindings for longevity. Good conservation practice often uses reversible adhesives such as wheat starch paste, sometimes combined with a flexible PVA layer, so that future repairs remain possible.
Choosing the wrong method for the material
A binding method that suits a paperback novel may be wrong for a rare manuscript or a tightly bound journal that needs to be photocopied. Oversewing, for example, makes a strong binding but reduces the inner margin and prevents the book from lying flat. By the late twentieth century many librarians and conservators had concluded that the drawbacks of oversewing often outweighed its benefits for valuable items, and double-fan adhesive binding and resewing through the folds became preferred for many materials. Matching the method to the document’s value, expected use, and physical condition is the mark of skilled library binding.

Binding is a sequence of deliberate steps that converts loose printed sheets into a lasting volume. Folding creates the sections, gathering puts them in order, sewing locks them together, and covering protects the whole. Each stage supports the durability and usability that libraries depend on.
