When most people picture bookbinding, they think of the cover, the sewing, and the title stamped on the spine. The small finishing operations get overlooked. Yet whether a bound volume survives a decade of circulation or falls apart in a year often comes down to three modest tasks performed near the end of the binding process: fixing pockets for loose inserts, attaching endpapers, and securing the sewing tapes. These elements rarely draw attention, but they carry a large share of the structural load. Getting them right is what separates a library binding from an ordinary one.

Why the finishing elements decide a book’s lifespan
The great library scientist S. R. Ranganathan described bookbinding as a chain of linked operations, with the printed text block sitting at the centre. His point was simple but important: the binding is only as strong as its weakest link. A beautifully sewn text block fails if the endpapers tear at the joint, and a sturdy case is useless if a bulging pocket warps the whole volume out of shape.
This is why standards bodies treat these tasks with the same seriousness as sewing or casing-in. The widely referenced Library Binding Standard, ANSI/NISO/LBI Z39.78, devotes detailed clauses to the materials used for endpapers, pockets, and inserts because these components come into direct contact with the first and last pages of the book and bear repeated stress every time a reader opens the volume.
Affixing pockets for loose materials
Many books and journals arrive with accompanying material that cannot be sewn into the text block. Folded maps, charts, plates, errata slips, music parts, or supplementary CDs all fall into this category. Their format is wrong for stitching, but they still belong with the volume. The solution is a pocket built into the binding to hold them.
When a pocket is needed
A pocket is appropriate whenever loose material would otherwise be lost or damaged if left unattached. A folded geological map that accompanies a survey report, for example, must travel with that report. The pocket keeps the two together on the shelf and during circulation. Binderies usually note that volumes requiring pockets need special handling, precisely because the operation adds bulk that has to be managed carefully.
Constructing a pocket without distorting the volume
The central challenge is that a pocket adds thickness to one side of the book. If a thick map sits in a pocket at the back, that side of the volume becomes fatter than the spine edge, and the book no longer closes flat or stands square on the shelf. Over time this uneven pressure strains the case and breaks down the joints.
Binders solve this with a technique called stubbing, in which narrow strips of paper are bound in at the spine to build up its thickness so that it matches the bulk created by the pocket and its contents. The pocket itself should be made from a paper of suitable weight and durability. The Library Binding Standard specifies that papers used for stubbing, pockets, and setting out inserts must meet the same quality requirements as endpaper stock and be of a weight appropriate for the material being held. The guiding principle is that the finished volume should keep a shape as close to normal as possible, so it shelves and opens like any other book.
Endpapers: the inner link between text block and cover
Endpapers are the leaves found at the very front and back of a book, partly pasted to the inside of the cover and partly free. They look decorative, but their job is structural. They form the inner hinge that joins the text block to the case, and they protect the first and last printed pages from wear. When you open a book and feel the cover swing smoothly without cracking, well-made endpapers are doing much of that work.
Choosing the right paper
Because endpapers absorb so much stress, the paper must be strong, thick, and chemically stable. A weak sheet tears at the hinge after a few openings, and an acidic sheet slowly damages the pages it touches. Conservation guidance is firm on this point: the materials used throughout the binding should be durable and chemically stable, with endpapers receiving the greatest concern of all because they sit against the text. For this reason, library binderies use acid-free and buffered endpaper stock with high folding endurance.
A standard endpaper is not a single sheet but a folded section that yields four leaves, giving extra strength at the join. To reinforce the hinge further, these sections are commonly provided with cloth or linen joints, a strip of fabric that adds tear resistance exactly where the cover bends.
Grain direction and a smooth finish
Paper has a grain, the direction in which its fibres mostly align, and it folds and flexes far more easily along the grain than across it. For endpapers, the machine direction of the paper should run parallel to the binding edge, so the leaf bends naturally at the hinge instead of resisting and cracking. The same logic applies to other case papers; the standard requires the grain of inlays and similar components to run parallel with the spine.
Workmanship matters as much as material. The standard states that endpapers must adhere smoothly to all surfaces and be free of wrinkles and bubbles. A wrinkled endpaper is not just unsightly; trapped air and uneven adhesive create weak spots that fail early.
Tapes: the hidden backbone of the spine
Sewing tapes are narrow fabric strips placed across the spine, running from the front to the back of the book at right angles to the folds of the sections. As the binder sews each section, the thread passes over these tapes, locking the sections to them. The tape ends are then secured to the boards or endpapers, anchoring the entire text block firmly inside the case. Tapes are largely invisible in the finished book, yet they are a primary reason a sewn volume can be opened thousands of times without the pages pulling loose.
Why unbleached linen or cotton
The choice of tape material is a direct trade-off between strength, flexibility, and longevity. Linen is the preferred material because it is exceptionally strong and flexible, and it ages well without becoming brittle. The tapes sold for this purpose are typically unbleached and unsized, often a blend of linen and cotton, because bleaching and sizing chemicals can weaken fibres and introduce acidity over the long life of a library book.
Cotton tape is a recognised alternative. It is cheaper and adequate for many purposes, but binders generally agree that cotton is somewhat less durable than linen and better suited to books that do not need to survive heavy, long-term use. For collections meant to last, unbleached linen remains the standard. Some institutional specifications make linen tapes a requirement when the binding instructions call for them.
How many tapes, and where they go
The number and placement of tapes are not arbitrary. Larger and heavier books need more tapes to distribute the load along the spine; a thin pamphlet may need only one or two, while a thick volume needs three or more. The Library of Congress binding specifications direct that tapes be spaced evenly between the head and tail of the book, with the number complying with the NISO standard.
Even spacing is the key idea. When the tapes are balanced along the spine, the panels between them flex consistently, and no single area of the spine takes excessive stress when the book is opened. Crowding the tapes at one end leaves weak points where the binding can crack. As with sewing generally, the head and tail anchors are kept a short distance in from the edges, and the remaining span is divided to position the tapes at regular intervals. The sewing-over-tapes technique turns these fabric strips into an integral part of the spine itself, which is why their material and placement carry so much weight.
Bringing the three elements together
Pockets, endpapers, and tapes are usually treated as minor finishing steps, but each one quietly determines how long a volume lasts. A pocket holds the book’s companion material without warping it. Endpapers form a strong, stable hinge and shield the text. Tapes lock the sewn sections to the case and spread the stress of opening across the whole spine. Each link supports the others, and a binder who skimps on any one of them undermines the entire structure, no matter how good the rest of the work is.
This is the practical meaning of Ranganathan’s chain. Quality is not concentrated in a single dramatic step; it is built up through consistent attention to materials and workmanship at every stage. For anyone studying preservation, learning to judge these small operations, the weight of an endpaper, the grain of the paper, the spacing of the tapes, is what turns a casual reader of books into someone who can evaluate and protect them. A careful reading of the binding standard shows just how much engineering hides inside an object we usually take for granted.
