After the sections have been sewn, the spine has been glued, and the boards have been attached, a bound book still looks unfinished. The boards are bare, the spine is exposed, and nothing yet holds the whole structure together as a single, handsome object. The covering stage is what completes the job. It is the moment when a working text block becomes a finished book, wrapped in the material that will protect it on the shelf and in the hands of every reader who borrows it. Choosing that material and deciding how much of the book it should wrap are two of the most important decisions a binder makes.

What the covering stage actually involves

Covering is the final step of the forwarding process in binding. The chosen material is cut to size, coated with adhesive, and carefully drawn over the spine and the boards. The binder then turns the edges in over the board edges, works the material into the joints, and smooths out any air bubbles or wrinkles. When this is done well, the covering becomes a tight, seamless skin over the book.

The decisions made here are not just about looks. The covering material determines how long the book will survive repeated handling, how well it resists humidity and insects, and how much the binding will cost. Conservators treat covering as a functional choice first and a decorative one second. A binding that carries information about its period, region, and the skill of its maker begins with the material chosen at this stage.

Types of covering materials

Four materials dominate library and trade binding: leather, cloth, rexine, and paper. Each sits at a different point on the scale of cost, durability, and appearance, and each suits a different kind of book.

Leather

Leather is the oldest covering material and remains the standard for the finest work. Before the 1820s, almost all books were bound in leather. It is strong, flexible, and ages with a character that no synthetic can match, which is why it is still the first choice for art and archival bindings. Goatskin (often called morocco), calf, and pigskin are common varieties, and a well-made leather binding can last for centuries.

Leather also has real drawbacks. It is the most expensive option, the work is largely done by hand, and it demands skilled labour. Leather is also vulnerable to a destructive form of decay known as red rot, in which the material disintegrates into a red powder that can soil hands and clothing. In libraries, leather is therefore reserved for rare books, special collections, and volumes whose value justifies both the expense and the care.

Cloth

Book cloth came into widespread use around the 1820s, when manufacturing improved enough that cloth could be finished and decorated in a way that resembled leather. Cotton and linen are the most common base fabrics, and the woven cloth is treated to resist moisture and insect damage. Buckram, a heavy, stiffened cloth, is especially valued for its toughness.

Cloth offers an excellent balance of cost, durability, and appearance. It is far cheaper than leather, easy to apply, available in many colours and textures, and easy to clean. It is less durable than leather and may show wear sooner on heavily used volumes, but for general collections in academic and public libraries it is the practical default. Most hardcover editions you see on a shelf today are cloth-bound.

Rexine

Rexine is a synthetic leather-cloth, originally a registered British trademark for a fabric made of cloth surfaced with a mixture of cellulose nitrate, camphor oil, pigment, and other materials and embossed to look like leather. Modern rexine is typically cloth coated with PVC. It gives the appearance of leather without leather’s price or maintenance demands.

For library binding, rexine has become very popular. It is durable, water-resistant, easy to clean with a damp cloth, and inexpensive. These qualities matter especially in humid regions, where natural materials are more prone to mould and mildew. Many libraries use rexine for binding journals, reference works, and other heavily handled volumes. Its one long-term weakness is that the plastic component can eventually stiffen or crack as it ages.

Paper

Paper was actually the most common covering material before cloth took over in the nineteenth century. It remains in wide use today, mostly for inexpensive bindings and as the side material in partial bindings. Paper covers can be plain, coated, or decorated, and marbled paper is a traditional favourite for the boards of finer books.

Paper is the cheapest option and the easiest to work, which makes it ideal for mass-market books, pamphlets, and temporary bindings. It offers the least protection of the four. Paper wears quickly, tears easily, and is highly vulnerable to moisture, so it is not chosen where long-term strength is the goal. Its great strength is economy.

Partial and full covering

Beyond the choice of material, the binder must decide how much of the book that material should cover. This is where the terms quarter, half, three-quarter, and full binding come in. All of them describe how much of the book is covered by a single material. The distinction is not just a technical curiosity; it directly affects the cost, the durability, and the look of the finished book.

Full covering

In a full binding, the spine and both boards are covered entirely in one material. The whole cover is wrapped in the same material, with no second material showing. A “full calf” or “full leather” binding, for instance, means the complete spine and boards are clothed in calf or leather.

Full binding gives maximum protection and usually the most impressive appearance, but it uses the most material and the most labour, making it the most expensive choice. In libraries it is reserved for rare books, special collections, and important reference volumes. The decision to use full binding usually reflects the value of the content rather than economics alone.

Half covering

Half binding is a compromise that protects the parts of a book that wear out first. The spine and the corners of the boards are covered in one, stronger material, while the rest of each board is covered in a second, cheaper material. Traditionally the spine and corners are leather and the sides are cloth or decorative paper.

This style concentrates the durable material exactly where stress is highest, namely the spine and the corners, while saving money on the large flat areas of the boards. The result is a binding that combines durability with a handsome two-material appearance, which is why half bindings remain popular for those who want a traditional look without the cost of full leather.

Quarter covering

Quarter binding uses the least amount of the primary material. Only the spine and a small strip of the boards next to it are covered in the stronger material; the rest of the boards are covered in something else, and the corners are left uncovered. The clearest way to tell quarter from half binding is the corners: the corners of a quarter-bound book are not covered in the same material as the spine, whereas a half binding covers them.

Quarter binding is the most economical of the partial styles because it uses the least of the expensive material while still reinforcing the spine, which is the most stressed area of the book. For libraries binding large numbers of ordinary volumes, this targeted protection at low cost is exactly what is needed.

Three-quarter covering

Three-quarter binding is a richer version of half binding. The spine and corners are covered in the primary material as before, but the spine material extends much further onto the boards, leaving a smaller area of the secondary material exposed. Half and three-quarter bindings are often confused because both cover the spine and corners; the difference is simply how much of the board the primary material claims. It offers more protection and a more luxurious look than a half binding, at a correspondingly higher cost.

Why the covering stage matters

The covering is not merely the decorative finish of a book. It serves several functions that decide how long the book will last and how easily it can be used.

Protection

The most basic job of the covering is to shield the text block and the boards from the outside world. It guards against abrasion, dirt, light, moisture, and insects, and it absorbs the stress of repeated opening and closing. A binding without proper covering would expose its boards and spine to damage from the first day of use. In libraries, where books are handled constantly, this protective layer is what stands between a collection and the cost of frequent rebinding.

Durability and usability

Covering material binds the structure into a single working object and reinforces the joints, where most bindings eventually fail. The choice of material and the extent of covering together determine how many times a book can be opened before it begins to break down. This is the logic behind partial bindings: they place the toughest material at the joints and corners, the points of greatest wear, while economising elsewhere. The covering decisions made today determine how accessible and usable a collection will be for decades.

Appearance and identification

A good covering gives a book a finished, dignified appearance, and the spine carries the title and author for shelving and retrieval. Covering style also helps conservators and collectors identify when and where a book was bound, since particular materials and styles were standard in particular periods and places.

Choosing the right approach

There is no single best covering material or style. The right choice depends on the value of the book, how often it will be used, the budget available, and the local climate. Leather and full binding suit rare and treasured volumes; cloth and rexine in half or quarter bindings suit the working collections that make up most of a library. National conservation efforts, including those that care for historical manuscripts, generally emphasise pH-neutral, stable materials and regular assessment of binding condition. For everyday collections, matching a durable, affordable material to the right extent of covering gives the best return on every rupee spent.
