Walk into a college library today and you will notice something different from a decade ago. The bulky card catalogue cabinets have mostly disappeared, students search for books on a computer screen, and many of them are reading journal articles on their phones instead of pulling a printed volume off the shelf. This is not a small cosmetic change. Indian libraries and information institutions are passing through one of the biggest shifts in their history, moving from print-based, manual operations to digital, network-connected service centres. The change is being driven by technology, by the demands of a new generation of users, and by the urgent need for library staff to learn fresh skills. Let us look at how this transformation is unfolding and what it means for everyone who depends on libraries.

From card catalogues to keyboards: how technology reshaped library work
The clearest sign of change is library automation, the use of software to handle tasks that were once done by hand. Activities like cataloguing, issuing and returning books, managing subscriptions, and tracking overdue items are now carried out through an Integrated Library Management System (ILMS). Automation has not just made these tasks faster; it has freed staff from repetitive clerical work so they can focus on helping users. Studies tracking Indian academic libraries show automation adoption rising from a tiny share at the start of the 2000s to the overwhelming majority of institutions today, even though access remains uneven across better-funded and poorly-funded campuses.
Library management software and the rise of open source
Two names dominate any conversation about automation in Indian libraries. The first is SOUL (Software for University Libraries), developed by the INFLIBNET Centre specifically for the needs of Indian university and college libraries. The second is Koha, the world’s first free and open-source ILMS, which many institutions have adopted because it carries no per-seat licensing fees and is backed by an active global community. Several universities have migrated from older systems to Koha to manage acquisitions, circulation, cataloguing, and serials in one place. Alongside the software sit physical technologies like barcodes, QR codes, and RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) tags, which speed up issue-return counters and provide theft detection. The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) has replaced the printed card, letting a user check whether a book is available without walking to a single shelf.
Digitization and digital repositories
Digitization is the other half of the technology story. It means converting print material, manuscripts, theses, and rare documents into digital files that can be stored, searched, and shared online. This solves two old problems at once: it protects fragile originals from handling damage and it removes the limits of physical space and geography. A landmark example is Shodhganga, the national repository of theses and dissertations submitted to Indian universities, which makes research that once sat in a single library reading room available to scholars everywhere. Many institutions build their own digital repositories using software such as DSpace to capture and preserve scholarly output for the long term.
The evolving needs of today’s library users
Technology alone does not force libraries to change. The deeper driver is that users themselves have changed. A student today begins almost every assignment with an internet search and expects information to be available instantly, at any hour, on whatever device is in their hand. The traditional model, where a library is open from morning to evening and serves only those who physically visit, no longer matches how people study and research.
Anytime, anywhere access
Libraries have responded by moving towards 24×7 digital services. Through remote access and proxy servers, registered users can read e-journals and e-books from home on a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Mobile-friendly catalogues, library apps, and SMS or email alerts for due dates have become common. The expectation of immediate, self-service access has reshaped what users consider a “good” library. Increasingly, the value of a library lies less in the size of its building and more in the quality and reach of the digital content it can provide.
National platforms widening access
Some of the most powerful changes have come from national-level initiatives that no single library could build on its own. The National Digital Library of India (NDLI), developed at IIT Kharagpur and sponsored by the Ministry of Education, is a single-window virtual repository of learning resources that supports many Indian languages and serves learners from school level to research scholars. For higher education, the e-ShodhSindhu consortium and its college-focused N-LIST programme provide subscribed access to thousands of full-text journals and e-books that individual colleges could never afford alone. More recently, the One Nation One Subscription scheme has aimed to bring a large basket of scholarly journals to institutions across the country under a single national agreement.
Why library professionals need new skills
The biggest mistake in discussing this transformation is to think it is only about machines. Every new system needs a person who can run it, troubleshoot it, and explain it to confused users. This is why the role of the library professional has shifted so dramatically. The image of the quiet librarian who only stamps books and keeps order is long out of date. Today’s professional is part information manager, part systems administrator, and part teacher.
The new skill set
To stay relevant, library staff now need a working command of several technical and people-facing skills. Some of the most important include:
- ICT and software proficiency: Comfort with library management systems, digital repository software, and basic troubleshooting of hardware and networks.
- Metadata and cataloguing standards: Knowledge of standards like MARC 21 so that digital content can be found and retrieved easily.
- Digital literacy instruction: The ability to teach users how to search databases, evaluate online sources, and avoid misinformation. Research on Indian technical institutions found that while many professionals are technically skilled, a much smaller share feel confident teaching those skills to others, which is a clear gap to close.
- Data management and curation: Organising and preserving research data so it stays accessible and trustworthy over time.
- Communication and service orientation: Strong people skills remain essential, since technology only helps if users feel supported in using it.
Continuous professional development
Because tools change so quickly, learning cannot stop at the time of a degree. Library professionals are expected to engage in continuous professional development through workshops, refresher courses, hands-on training on specific software, and self-directed learning. Bodies like INFLIBNET regularly conduct training programmes to help staff adopt new systems and open-source tools. The emerging roles of librarians increasingly include guiding researchers, managing institutional repositories, and helping bridge the digital divide for users who lack technology skills of their own. In this sense, the librarian has become a navigator who helps people find their way through an overwhelming flood of information.
Challenges that remain in the transition
It would be misleading to present this transformation as smooth or complete. Serious obstacles persist, and they affect different libraries unequally. Funding constraints make it hard for smaller institutions to buy software, hardware, and subscriptions. Rural and remote regions often struggle with unreliable electricity and patchy internet connectivity, which limits how much digital service they can offer. There is also a shortage of trained ICT staff, and resistance to change among some long-serving employees who are uneasy with new systems. The result is what researchers call a socio-digital divide, where well-resourced urban libraries race ahead while others fall behind. Government efforts under the Digital India programme and modernization grants from the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation have helped narrow this gap, but the work is far from finished.
The overall direction, however, is clear. Indian libraries are no longer simply storehouses of printed books. They are becoming dynamic, technology-driven hubs that combine print and digital collections, serve users around the clock, and depend on professionals who keep learning throughout their careers. The institutions that thrive will be the ones that treat technology, user needs, and staff skills as three parts of a single strategy rather than separate concerns.
