Walk into a library built a hundred years ago and you feel it instantly: high ceilings, heavy stone, long staircases, and an atmosphere that almost asks you to stay quiet. Walk into a newly designed library today and the experience is completely different. There are open reading zones, group discussion areas, computer terminals, and sometimes even a café corner. This shift is not accidental. It reflects a deep change in how we think about what a library building should be and do. The concept of the library building has moved from being a monument to knowledge into being a flexible service space designed around its users. Let us trace this journey and understand the ideas that shaped it.

From monumental structures to functional spaces
For a very long time, library buildings were designed to impress. They were meant to symbolise power, permanence, and the authority of knowledge. Think of the ancient Library of Alexandria or the grand colonial-era libraries with their tall columns and ornate facades. The building itself was a statement. The message was clear: knowledge is precious, and only certain people may approach it.
These early designs were often what experts call fixed-function buildings. The structure was built for one purpose, and the layout was locked into that purpose. Until around the 1950s, academic library buildings were constructed with heavy multi-tier book stacks that actually held up part of the building’s weight. Because the stacks were structural, you could not simply move them. The placement of reading areas and book storage was decided once and could not be easily changed afterwards, as documented in studies on the architectural evolution of libraries.
Why the shift happened
As society changed, so did the expectations placed on libraries. Education spread to more people, and the idea of free and equal access to information took hold. A library could no longer be an intimidating temple meant for a privileged few. It had to welcome students, workers, children, senior citizens, and first-time readers alike.
Designers began to prioritise accessibility, comfort, and usability over grandeur. Modern libraries now include spacious reading rooms, collaborative study corners, quiet zones, and informal seating. The goal moved away from constructing an architectural masterpiece and towards building a space that genuinely serves the community. In this sense, the change in library buildings mirrors the democratisation of knowledge itself, where the library is seen as an equaliser that offers everyone access to tools and space they may not otherwise afford.
The impact of modular design
The single most important idea behind the modern library building is flexibility, and flexibility became possible because of modular design. After the Second World War, academic libraries started adopting a modular approach, and by around 1960 this style was widely accepted.
So what exactly is a modular building? In a modular library, the floor is divided into equal rectangular sections supported by regularly spaced columns rather than by load-bearing book stacks. Because the structure no longer depends on the shelves, the interior space becomes a kind of blank canvas. Walls, shelves, desks, and service counters can be moved around without touching the building’s frame. A library can rearrange its floor plan whenever needs change.
Faulkner-Brown’s ten commandments
No discussion of modern library buildings is complete without mentioning the British architect Harry Faulkner-Brown. In the 1970s he set out a famous set of design principles, popularly called the ten commandments of library design. He argued that a good library building should be flexible, compact, accessible, extendible, varied, organised, comfortable, constant in environment, secure, and economic.
Of these, flexibility sat at the top of the list. According to the principles described in the UNESCO management reader, a flexible building is one where the structure, heating, ventilation, and lighting are all arranged to make adaptation easy. By spacing columns regularly and designing floors strong enough to carry the heavy load of bookshelves anywhere, librarians can shift departments, issue desks, and reading areas to any part of the building. These principles were later incorporated into the IFLA Library Building Guidelines and continue to influence library planning across the world.
Why modularity matters for the future
The real advantage of modular design is that it prepares a building for a future we cannot fully predict. A library built in 1990 could not have anticipated the explosion of laptops, smartphones, and digital resources. A modular building, however, can absorb such changes. A storage area can become a study commons, a card-catalogue room can become a computer lab, and a quiet hall can be split into discussion pods, all without major construction. This makes the building extendible and economic over its long life, which is exactly what the ten commandments recommend.
Dispersal of collections
Older libraries were often imagined as a single, massive building that held everything under one roof. Modern thinking has moved towards what is called the dispersal of collections. Instead of one monolithic structure, a library system is increasingly designed as a network of interconnected spaces and buildings.
There are several practical reasons for this. As collections grew larger, housing every single item in one central building became expensive and impractical. Distributing materials across branch libraries, departmental collections, and dedicated storage facilities allows resources to sit closer to the people who actually use them. A medical college collection can be kept near the hospital, while a general reading collection stays at the central campus.
Compact storage and smart retrieval
Dispersal is closely linked to the idea of keeping rarely used materials in dense, compact storage while keeping popular materials easily reachable. Some advanced libraries abroad have taken this to an extreme with automated systems. At one university library, for example, robotic retrieval systems fetch books from a storage area that uses only a fraction of the space of open stacks, as described in an account of the architectural evolution of the library. The space saved is then handed back to users in the form of study rooms, learning commons, and makerspaces.
The underlying principle applies even where robots are not involved. By treating the collection as something that can be distributed and managed across spaces, rather than piled into one giant hall, planners free up valuable room for human activity. The building stops being a warehouse and starts being a place to learn.
The role of technology in library planning
Perhaps no force has reshaped library buildings as powerfully as digital technology. When most information lived only on paper, the building’s main job was to store and protect physical volumes. Today, a huge amount of information is accessed digitally, and this has changed why people visit a library at all.
Research on higher education libraries shows that users now spend less time issuing and returning books and more time studying, accessing electronic resources, working in groups, and interacting with peers. This behavioural change directly affects design. Libraries in developed countries have already redesigned their spaces to include reading zones, creative spaces, makerspaces, and quiet study areas, though studies note that many higher education libraries are still adapting to these user needs.
Planning for the learning commons
One major result of digital integration is the learning commons model. A learning commons combines books, computers, comfortable furniture, and collaborative space into a single flexible environment. The idea is to support a student who might research online, study a textbook, and discuss with classmates all in one sitting. Designing such a space requires planning for power outlets, strong internet connectivity, and movable furniture, treating the furniture itself as part of the learning process.
The Indian context
These ideas are visible in Indian libraries too. A spatial study comparing libraries in Chennai noted that the historic Connemara Public Library added a digital zone alongside its traditional quiet stacks, but found it difficult to fit in newer active and community zones without major rebuilding. The newer Anna Centenary Library, designed on modern service principles, was able to include an amphitheatre, auditorium, and conference halls, allowing it to function far more flexibly in today’s context. The comparison neatly illustrates why modular, future-ready planning matters.
On the purely digital side, the National Digital Library of India shows how some collections no longer need any physical building at all. Digital storage requires very little physical space, which means planners can redirect floor area away from stacks and towards people. The modern library building is therefore designed to host both a physical and a digital service in parallel, balancing shelves with screens, and storage with social space.
Bringing the threads together
The story of the library building is really a story of changing priorities. We moved from buildings that celebrated knowledge as a monument to buildings that deliver knowledge as a service. Modular design gave libraries the flexibility to adapt. The dispersal of collections freed them from being mere warehouses. And digital technology reshaped them into living spaces for study, creativity, and community. Each idea builds on the previous one, and together they explain why a modern library feels so different from its grand ancestors.
