Ergonomics is the science of designing equipment and work processes so that they fit the people who use them, rather than forcing people to adapt to poorly designed surroundings. The word itself comes from the Greek ergon (work) and nomos (natural law), and the discipline has historically focused on reducing work-related musculoskeletal disorders while improving efficiency, comfort, and safety.
In a library, this means designing the space so that a student studying for six hours and a librarian working an eight-hour shift both stay comfortable and productive. The International Ergonomics Association recognises three branches of the field, and all three apply to libraries. Physical ergonomics deals with posture, seating, desks, and repetitive movement. Cognitive ergonomics deals with how people perceive, concentrate, and process information in a space. Discomfort, by contrast, drives people away. Shelving, layout, and movement
Shelving height and arrangement determine how easily people reach materials. Shelves should be positioned at convenient heights and laid out so that movement through the space is smooth and accessible to everyone, including wheelchair users and elderly visitors. Modular, movable furniture lets a single space shift between a group story session, a quiet study zone, and a community event without strain.
Lighting, acoustics, and the stress-free environment
Lighting matters enormously. A library needs adequate natural and artificial light, but it must avoid glare on screens and printed pages. Noise is equally important: high noise levels are linked to fatigue, headaches, stress, and other health problems. Award-winning library projects increasingly replace closed offices with open, light-filled study nooks and acoustically comfortable, daylight-rich spaces. Architects now routinely survey communities and run focus groups before designing, so that the building reflects how people actually want to use it. Natural lighting, warm wooden accents, and connections to outdoor spaces have become defining features of new library facilities, signalling that comfort and community are now central design goals rather than afterthoughts.

One of the most striking ideas comes from Japan, where researchers have studied how scent affects concentration and accuracy. In a widely cited study by Takasago, a major Japanese fragrance company, office workers using computers made 54% fewer typing errors when the air was scented with lemon, with jasmine and lavender also reducing mistakes. The science behind this is that scent is the one sense that travels almost directly to the brain’s limbic system, the region tied to emotion and memory, which is why fragrance can shift mood and focus so quickly.
While such findings are often promoted by the fragrance industry and should be read with that in mind, the underlying point holds value for libraries: the sensory environment, not just the furniture, shapes how people feel and perform. Citrus scents are associated with energy and concentration, while lavender and jasmine are linked to a calmer, less stressful atmosphere. A library that thinks about air quality, gentle natural fragrance, soft acoustics, and comfortable temperature is designing for the whole human experience, not just the seated body.
What it means for libraries everywhere
The common thread across these global trends is a move from collection-centred design to human-centred design. Whether through adjustable furniture, biophilic green spaces, careful acoustics, or attention to scent and air, the goal is the same: to make the library a place where people genuinely want to spend time. For public libraries serving diverse communities, ergonomics is one of the most cost-effective ways to raise satisfaction, support staff, and keep the doors busy.
