Information is no longer just something we store on shelves or in databases. It has become an active force that reshapes how we learn, how we form opinions, and how institutions function. Over the past two decades, the rapid spread of digital technologies has turned information and knowledge into engines of change across almost every part of society. A student in a small town can now attend a lecture delivered from a metro city, a citizen can pay taxes without visiting an office, and a single video can shift the mood of millions within hours. This post examines how the flow of information has transformed three key sectors that touch our daily lives: education, media, and the combined world of business and government.

Information as a force for social change
At its core, information shapes society by reducing distances and removing barriers. When knowledge is hard to access, power and opportunity stay concentrated in the hands of a few. When information flows freely, it spreads opportunity more widely. The arrival of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accelerated this process dramatically. Every sector that once relied on physical presence, paper records, and slow communication has been forced to adapt.
The scale of this shift is visible in the numbers. Internet connections in the country grew from about 25 crore in March 2014 to nearly 97 crore by June 2024, an increase of over 285 percent. This explosion of connectivity is the foundation on which all the changes discussed below rest. Without widespread access to information networks, none of the transformations in education, media, business, or governance would have been possible.
Impact on education
Education has been one of the sectors most visibly transformed by information technology. The traditional model placed a teacher and students in the same room at the same time. Technology has broken that limitation. Learning can now happen anytime and anywhere, and a single piece of quality content can reach learners across the country at once.
From classrooms to e-learning
E-learning is the most direct outcome of applying information technology to education. It allows students to access courses, video lectures, and study material through their devices, removing the cost and time of travel. This is especially valuable in a large country where good teachers and institutions are unevenly distributed. Online platforms let a learner in a remote area access the same lecture as someone in a major city. Distance learning and blended models, which mix online and offline study, give students the flexibility to learn at their own pace.
The Digital India initiative, launched in 2015, gave this shift a strong push by promoting digital infrastructure and digital literacy. Government platforms have made educational resources freely available. The DIKSHA platform, for example, serves as a national repository for school education content, while e-PG Pathshala hosts a wide range of academic e-resources for higher education. These efforts reflect a clear goal: to reduce the barriers that keep quality education out of reach for many learners.
Virtual classrooms and personalized learning
The virtual classroom moved from being an experiment to a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic, when physical institutions closed and learning shifted online almost overnight. Tools that allow live video teaching, screen sharing, and instant doubt-clearing recreated much of the classroom experience on a screen. The pandemic also fuelled massive growth in the education technology sector, with Indian platforms attracting large investments as demand for online learning surged.
Beyond simply moving lessons online, technology enables personalized learning. Adaptive software and artificial intelligence can analyze how a student performs and adjust the difficulty and pace of content accordingly. This means each learner can receive support suited to their own strengths and weaknesses, something a single teacher managing a large class cannot easily provide. Technology has also streamlined administration, with digital platforms helping institutions manage records, attendance, and grades more efficiently.
The challenges that remain
The benefits of digital education are real, but so are the gaps. Access to devices, reliable internet, and digital skills varies sharply between urban and rural areas. Many teachers, particularly in rural regions, found the sudden switch to digital tools difficult. There are also concerns about the authenticity of online information and the security of student data. A balanced approach that combines digital tools with sound teaching methods works better than treating technology as a complete replacement for the human teacher.
Media transformation
The media industry has been reshaped by information technology more visibly than perhaps any other sector. The way news is produced, distributed, and consumed has changed completely within a single generation. Where people once waited for the morning newspaper or the evening television bulletin, they now receive a constant stream of updates on their phones.
The shift from traditional to digital
In the late twentieth century, television transformed journalism by bringing news directly into homes. The twenty-first century brought a far bigger disruption through the internet. Media outlets expanded their reach by building a digital presence, and platforms like Facebook and Twitter gave rise to citizen journalism, where ordinary people became active participants in reporting events. A person with a smartphone can now document a local issue, a protest, or an emergency and share it with the world, often faster than established news organizations.
This shift has changed the economics and the very definition of news. Short-form video on platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube has reshaped what audiences expect from content. Social media also lets journalists interact directly with audiences, gauge public opinion, and receive immediate feedback, building communities around their work in ways that were impossible with one-way traditional media.
Influence on public opinion
Because so many people now get their news from digital platforms, these platforms have enormous power to shape public opinion. Social media played a notable role in mobilizing large movements, such as the anti-corruption protests of 2011 and 2012 and the farmers’ protests, by amplifying messages and helping people organize. Political parties have also embraced these tools, using them to communicate with voters and shape narratives directly.
This power comes with serious risks. The algorithms that run social platforms are designed to maximize engagement, which often means promoting emotionally charged or sensational content over accurate information. This has fuelled the rapid spread of misinformation, where edited clips, out-of-context statements, and false narratives circulate widely before they can be corrected. The result is a real challenge to public trust and to the role of the media as a check on power. The responsibility to verify information, once held mainly by professional journalists, now falls partly on every individual user.
Influence on business and government
The third major area transformed by information is the world of organizations: both private businesses and public government. Both have had to adapt to a digital environment, and both have gained enormously from doing so. The same technology that connects students and news audiences also connects buyers to sellers and citizens to the state.
How businesses adapted
For businesses, information technology has changed everything from how products are sold to how customers are reached. E-commerce allows even small sellers to reach buyers across the country without owning a physical shop. Digital marketing lets companies target potential customers precisely through online advertisements and influencer collaborations, replacing the broad, expensive approach of older advertising. Data about customer behaviour now guides decisions that were once based on guesswork.
Digital payments have been central to this change. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched in 2016, made instant, low-cost transfers possible for everyone from large retailers to street vendors. The Reserve Bank of India projected that person-to-merchant transactions would make up the bulk of UPI activity, reflecting how deeply digital payments have entered everyday commerce. Since its launch, UPI adoption has grown to hundreds of millions of users, with billions of transactions processed every month. This has lowered the cost of doing business and pulled millions of small traders into the formal economy.
How government transformed through e-governance
E-governance is the use of ICT by the government to deliver services, share information, and run its operations. The goal is to make government services available to citizens and businesses in a convenient, efficient, and transparent manner. This represents a fundamental change in the relationship between the state and the citizen, replacing long queues and paper files with online portals accessible from home.
The impact has been wide-ranging. Digital India has reduced the distance between the government and citizens and helped deliver services directly to beneficiaries in a transparent and corruption-free manner, with Common Services Centres bringing government and business services to rural areas through local entrepreneurs. The Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) framework brought tens of crores of people into the formal banking system, while Direct Benefit Transfer sends subsidies straight to citizens’ accounts, cutting out the leakages that plagued older systems. Filing income tax returns, applying for passports, and accessing land records can now be done online.
Government and business benefits also feed into each other. Online filing, e-procurement, and the Goods and Services Tax Network have simplified compliance and improved the ease of doing business, encouraging investment and growth. As technologies like artificial intelligence and 5G mature, e-governance is expected to become even more inclusive and responsive.
Bridging the divide
The biggest unfinished task across both business and government is the digital divide. While urban areas enjoy high smartphone penetration and reliable internet, rural and remote regions still face gaps in connectivity, power supply, and digital literacy. Programmes like BharatNet aim to extend high-speed internet to rural areas, and innovations that allow payments on basic feature phones are helping bring the next set of users online. Closing this gap is essential, because the benefits of an information-driven society are only truly shared when everyone can participate in it.
A connected society
Looking across education, media, and the business-government sphere, a clear pattern emerges. Information technology has consistently done three things: it has reduced distance, increased access, and shifted power toward individuals. A student gains access to lectures once reserved for a few. A citizen gains the ability to report news or pay a bill without an intermediary. A small trader gains access to a national market. At the same time, these gains bring new responsibilities around accuracy, security, and inclusion. The challenge for society is to widen the benefits while managing the risks, so that the free flow of information serves everyone rather than only those already connected.
